Way to go, Sha'an! I actually cannot relate. I'm an "old lady" who got a liberal arts degree, then moved into computer IT then moved into engineering, went to art school in my 40's and now I'm doing illustrations and graphic design- and that's just my business life. I picked up Karate in my 30's, found out I'm not bad with a baseball bat, and racing carts is a blast. Trying new things is my MO so when I saw you struggling to learn to drive, I thought- "this is going to be soooo good for her". Is your self confidence increasing like crazy? I bet it is because I could see from your clips just how much better you were every time you got into the car. Fantastic work, Sha'an! Fantastic! ...and good on ya for remembering everyone's seat belts. :)

I’m not getting my license super late in life (I’m 23) but it’s definitely later than my peers and it’s comforting to see other people overcoming their anxiety! My biggest tip is: narrate as you drive. This means you are talking out loud and telling whoever is in the car with you what you are seeing. For example “there is a car pulling out, the lane on the right is ending so cars will be merging left, and I am going 25 mph” (I’m in America so obviously your units are different lol). This helps you be hyper-aware of everything on the road without panicking that you can’t see what’s happening. ❤

I promise to you, it feels super late, but its not. Many people get their licenses at 30-40-50. They see full adults and elderly in classes too. Also sweet trick! I am also close to finish paying my classes to get the exam so i feel u at 23 as well. We will prevail

i didn't get my license until 29 and was very anxious as well! now i'm a very confident and capable driver! having music on helped me get over the anxiety because it let me focus and stop overthinking everything. being careful but sure of what you want to do is key. edit to add: another really helpful tip is when you are turning, don't manually push the steering wheel back into place. it will start to straighten out on its own as you complete your turn, so just gently let it do so and guide it if needed!

Watching this has honestly made me cry because I relate SO MUCH to your driving anxieties and your fear and stress is just SO palpable. I'm about to turn 36 and I still don't have my license, and I'm frustrated with myself because of how much it limits me, but it's SO overwhelming and anxiety inducing. It's knowing that I'm not an observant person so I don't notice the cars around/behind me, forgetting to check my mirrors as much as I should because I'm so focused on the road ahead, forgetting everything I know when I get behind the wheel. Your experience is just SO relatable! But you're trying and you're sharing your experience with us and Rocket is so calm and patient, as well as encouraging and watching you makes me think maybe I can try again one day. I drove today to get my partner from the train station (we both ride it to visit each other) and then back home to my place which was about a 40 minute drive total and I was nervous as I tend to be when I drive, as well as this was the first time he saw me drive (he has a DL but not a car so I've never practiced with him before) but he was so supportive and he was so proud of me and that boosted my confidence even more! You will get it! even if it's small steps, even if it takes years, you'll get it! I've been driving for about 7 years now (and have owned a car for 3 of them) and i was SUCH an anxious learner and so so terrified of everything when i started. i failed my first test and it felt awful and it took me forever once i got my license to actually feel comfortable, but im telling you now (and everyone else who is an adult learner) as someone on the other side - it DOES get better and easier with practice! it's definitely a steep learning curve in the beginning but keep at it and in time it will start to fall into place, and things you forget will become automatic (checking mirrors, seatbelt, indicating, so on). and a little secret: plenty of adult drivers aren't actually that good, theyre just impatient and loud about it. you're doing great just trying to be safe, that's the most important thing. godspeed to you!! Highly recommend (if it is an option) to go have rocket drive you to an empty large carpark. That way you can practice where you are on the road, practice parking without other cars but you'll have the lines. And get your confidence up. My mum did that for me when I first started driving as I was such a nervous driver and it really helps. Then she would take me to quiet neighbourhoods to further practise confidence and where I was on the road etc.

Omg I'm 27 and only have my learner's license, and I truly have not driven *at all* in about 4 years. This was so comforting and inspiring - it made me want to try driving again!! happy for you!!!

I'm 44 and currently learning to drive as I've been so scared of driving. I've had 7 lessons so far and I'm really enjoying it even tho it's terrifying! I just don't wanna cause an accident it's terrifying! I'm learning in an automatic which I think was Def the right decision for me. Can't wait to pass and then get a car. Fingers crossed I will in the next year. I wanna take my dog on adventures!

you can do it!! i FINALLY passed my drive test earlier this year at 28 years old. i was scared too but it’s such an important skill to have! i was genuinely prouder of myself for getting my p’s than i was for graduating uni hahaha

I’m nearly 30 and I’ve been learning to drive for about a year with an instructor and we’ve only just started reversing now so you did so good! I was pretty nervous starting as well but because I am learning in a dual control car it made me feel a lot better because my instructor can just stop the car for me if something happens 😅

I loved the video! This is a subject that is very difficult for me. I got my license when i was 23 and never had a car, so i drove very few times and gave up. I felt so much anxious. The test was easy" because i drove for not long and the parking was good. But then reality came and i gave up. I used to think that i didnt have money enough if i crashed, the worry about other people and their cars, that maybe my father would need to pay to fix if something happened and that my father's cars never had an insurance ( in Brazil it is your choice if you pay insurance or not) so all of this always made me super anxious and the fact that i lived in a different city ( i moved because of uni) i didnt have a car to practice. ( in Brazil we dont have this learner plate, you have to go through driving school and get an instructor after passing the theorical test). Years feeling guilty and ashamed for not driving and depending on friends and parents to get me to places, i decided to take some class after 15 years. I still sweat a lot, think about 749392 scenarios, feel anxious with all the measurements or when having to pass between trucks or someone is behind my car, but what matters is that we are trying and giving our best. It is very scary, my mom always said that a car is a weapon we have to drive for us and for other people. Lots of things to think at the same time ( also, still the majority in my country we have to change gears while driving, which means having to think even more). I found super cute everybody that you picked to be your instructor, calm and and giving you nice words of encouragement. Keep going Sha'an, and dont forget to breathe!

You did so well!! And Rocket & Chris was such a patient man teaching you. You really got this!! I remembered when I first started driving too - I was 25, very scared to drive cause I always felt like I shouldnt be in control of something so powerful. My brother taught me and he always brought my dog - after I finally passed to be able to drive on my own (similar to the P plates in Aus), I still struggled driving by myself, I could do it but I wasn't confident. I eventually got a plushie of my dog and plopped him on my passenger side and that somehow boosted my confidence. That plushie still sits in my car, 10 years later and I just got my full license last year! (I still don't drive unless I really have to and my husband takes me everywhere in the car, hehe).
