As a dendrology fan that also lives in the Northeast US (in New Hampshire, so more north than PA), I think I can help with some of the questions about the leaves and such you have. I don't know if you'll see this because this video a couple days old now. But here goes anyway for you curious people in the future who may want to know! 1) 6:45 The oak bunch. Main difference is Red Oak's have sharp points on their leaves while White Oak have rounded points. This is a general observation for most oak species. There are some less common oak species that don't quite follow this rule but Red Oaks and White Oaks are the most common Oak species in the northeast US. 2) 9:49 Maple leaves. Most common species are Red Maple and Sugar Maple. These are pretty easy to tell the difference when you know what to look for. Red maple leaves, like their name suggests, turn mainly red in color (after having a nice tie-dye effect ranging from green and yellow to orange and red as the seasons change). The leaves also tend to be smaller and have only 3 main "veins" that run from the stem out towards the tips (you can see two much smaller veins all the way to the left and right, but these aren't as pronounced as the other 3 veins). Sugar maple leaves turn a solid golden yellow color and have 5 "veins" running from the stem towards the tips of the leaf. 3) 17:32 I'm less familiar with Alder, but my guess would be a Black Alder specifically. Some Alder have oval shaped leaves while others have more rounded leaves. Black Alder and European Alder have more rounded leaves by my memory and quick searching. I'm fairly certain your observation about Aspen/Birch because both do have rounded leaves, but they do have a single point usually. 4) 21:08 Pinnately compound leaves like this one are always hard for me to identify without being able to see the area it comes from as the type of seed it drops is a better identifier, for me anyway. That and the branching pattern, which isn't able to be observed by the leaf. What you have is actually one entire leaf rather than a branch of 7 leaves. This could be a Black Walnut as well, as Black Walnut can resemble Ash and Hickory with their leaf patterns. 5) 22:44 American Beech. Their leaf shape is very basic, but American Beech are also really common. Their veins seem to be more obvious to the eye for me. Very evenly spaced, perfectly parallel all the way to the edge. However, the leaf in the middle left might not be the same as the other 3. Hard to tell as I can't see the veining on that one too well in the video. American Beech are an understory tree usually found in later stage forests (from your video, large and tall pines with smaller trees growing in the understory supports this) as they can thrive with little sunlight. The bark on these tree tends to be very light gray in color and fairly smooth as well. They are one of the most resilient trees to be found in the Northeast US. As opposed to birch leaves, they tend to be rounded in shape with a fine point like a spade symbol in a deck of playing cards. Some Birches can look similarly to Beech, but from the area you were in the video, I'd feel safe with Beech. 6) 26:08, like you noted, the longer needles are from pine trees and tend to grow in clusters while Spruce and Fir needles grow individually. The branch that you noted was Spruce or Fir is most likely Spruce. Main difference is that Fir needles/branches are mainly flat and not growing all the way around the stem like Spruce needles you have. An individual Fir needle will lay flat and not roll easily, while Spruce needles will roll in your hand (they have a square/round shape). For comparison, Spruce trees are what people tend to buy for Christmas trees because they look very full and lush because the needles grow all around the stem rather than only in two directions. The cones you have are Pine cones (the more "open" cones with rounded scales) and Spruce cones (the less "open" and more densely packed scales that feel thinner) Best way to tell the difference between Spruce and Fir is to see how the cones grow on the tree. Fir cones grow upward while Pine and Spruce hang towards the ground.

Here in southern Brazil we only have 1 species of pine, called "Araucária", they can be 50 meters high, and their root is always the same length as the trunk, that is, 100 meters in total. (Nowadays, Araucaria is at severe risk of extinction) My grandfather had an artificial tree plantation that we call "Pinus" scientifically called "Pinus elliottii" which is also very common here, but 100% of the crops are artificial. The araucaria, unlike the Pinus that produces "pine cones", the araucaria produces what we call "Pinha", they are cones with about 50 cm in length and 30 in diameter, weighing more than 5kg, this is where the araucaria seeds are, we call them "pinhão". They can be eaten raw and without seasoning, but many prefer to roast them on an open fire or roast them on the plate of wood stoves with salt. A Gralha Azul (a species of bird in the region also takes this seed and ends up burying it to eat later and forgets it, in this place a new tree will appear.

Hello rift, I've been a long time watcher for almost half of my life. I started watching when i was around 8. I am 16 now and turning 17 soon. I have gone through rough times and great developments in my life and a constant has always been watching your videos at night to help me sleep. I started with your "let's eat" videos. And while they, "the man", and currency videos will always remain my favorite, this video is incredible. It is very professional, gorgeously produced, eductionional in a way that is fascinating while also extremely relaxing, and overall extremely personal. I recently got my drivers license after a nearly fatal accident (3 months ago, i was not at fault), you helped me in regaining my ability to enjoy bed time and sleep soundly. Even though you haven't been here personally, I've gone through many changes in my life while being a viewer. And seeing your channel grow in such astronomical ways is truly heart warming. You put such passion into your work. And this video TRULY sums it all up. I DEEPLY thank you for everything you have done. And I greatly hope to see more videos like this soon.

Currently taking a dendrology course and I believe I know most of the species featured in this video. First, of the oak leaves, the leaves with pointier protrusions on the end of the lobes are from either the Northern red oak (Quercus rubra) and black oak (Quercus velutina). Telling those two apart can be hard just from the leaf. The oak leaves with rounded lobes likely come from a white oak (Quercus alba.) I believe you may have two species of maple leaves. The two yellow leaves with five lobes and entire (non-serrated) margins are sugar maple (Acer saccharum) and the red leaf with three large lobes and two smaller ones is from a red maple (Acer rubrum). The tuliptree (Liriodendron tulipifera) leaves and buds are correctly identified. Beautiful tree! I was unable to identify the trees with the notch at the top. Next, those are indeed sassafras (Sassafras albidum) leaves. Next, I believe those are butternut (Juglans cinerea) leaves or black walnut (juglans nigra) leaves? The fact that they are thinner leaves and not super serrated leads me to that. Finally, those are the leaves of the American beech (Fagus grandifolia) The cones and needles you gathered most likely come from the Eastern white pine (pinus strobus) and Norway spruce (Picea abies). Great video. Honestly one of my favorites of yours, would love to see more nature content in all seasons.
