Days of Wine and Roses (1962) #WarnerArchive #WarnerBros #DaysofWineandRoses
When Blake Edwards' powerful film of J.P. Miller's heartrending teleplay Days of Wine and Roses hit movie screens, it won critical raves, box-office success and shone brightly as a career highlight for its two stars, Jack Lemmon and Lee Remick, playing a couple caught in alcoholism's web. A San Francisco public-relations hotshot is a "social" drinker...who never stops socializing. His vivacious wife starts drinking to keep him company. They live for good times. But eventually good times turn bad.
Directed By Blake Edwards
Starring Jack Lemmon, Lee Remick, Charles Bickford

At 60 I had my first blackout; I was going through a 1.75 litre of bourbon every two or three days. I worked and nobody knew; I kidded myself that because I functioned well enough to get kudos in my chosen field I didn’t have a serious problem. I just knew I needed to cut back. Then on a night off something happened at home; after many drinks, I lost a block of time. I woke up in the morning to find I had put my fist through the wall next to the kitchen light switch. In the living room a box of cds which I always took good care of(I love music) was scattered on the rug near the stereo. I remembered nothing of those two things happening. I had to walk through the house to make sure there was nothing else damaged. That’s pretty terrifying.

100 proof peppermint schnapps with beer for me. I was able to hold a good job, but it got to the point where I was afraid to have a conversation with my significant other because I couldn't remember significant parts of the previous day due to blackouts--I didn't know if I was going to be repeating myself, etc. Definitely terrifying. I eventually lost my home and my family due to my disease. Thanks to AA I'm clean and sober now for almost three years.

If I may be so bold as to presume to ask you (and you don't have to answer, of course!) - For clarity: do you mean that the Remick character should be cutting him some slack and tolerating his behavior?

@@redinhodaflauta1269 I think the poster means the alcoholic is exhibiting the resentment, in this case resenting the baby getting priority.

My ex was that way- He got me into drinking very heavily alongside him. Every night, we’d stay up drinking. Said- “this way, we can have the most fun.” I’m 5 years sober now. He was wrong, and will always be wrong with a mindset like that…

Yeah, I mean I understand going out for a few drinks on a Friday and Saturday but beyond that it's just excessive. I can't abide by weekday drinking. It just makes the activity lose it's fun. But I suppose drinking is the most fun an alcoholic can have.

Before going up to the apartment, he saw some tulips on the sidewalk outside. He pulled them out of the ground to bring to his wife to make amends for staying out late. But he was too drunk to notice that the heads of the tulips got caught in the elevator, thus ripping the heads from the stems which stayed in his coat sleeve.
