Great hunt. Congrats! I appreciate you taking the time to thoroughly explain the ideal conditions under which that front-facing shot was taken. For any new bow hunters watching, more often than not, head-on archery shots are a poor decision with ugly results. In this case, the archer was already at full draw and the buck was calm and only 12 yards away. And as Garrett explained, he was only 10 feet high in the tree which greatly increased his margin of error.

Awesome job 👏 👍! That place looked pretty much untouched. Was it? That's something I've noticed as well. Once those later season temps plummet the "Hunters" disappear with quickness. Which I honestly can't blame them one bit because I freeze my tail off alot. I don't know though,I just keep coming back for more. I prefer it but it's super tough and I've ate tag soup the last couple years because of it. I hunt mostly public,so no feed insight and it's super tough to catch deer moving at all. They stay tight to bedding and trying to get real close to bedding when everything is frozen is pretty much impossible. I'll keep at it though. Thanks for the encouragement in the mean time!

Love seeing deer in the snow great footage. The white balance was excellent did you set it manually or auto?
@DIYSportsman Жыл бұрын
I used auto, but I did do some color correction in post. Especially with the phone footage which came in a little blue. The sony was pretty much spot on but I brought back some of the blue in the sky so it matched the 360 footage colors a little better.
@HuntingNoobie Жыл бұрын
I listened to your podcast breakdown of the hunt. Couldn't wait to see the video. That shot was nasty! In a good way of course. How far are you usually having to go in to get away from hunting pressure? I hunt small public parcels and all the deer are hiding in private during shooting hours. Gonna start looking at bigger public land.
@DIYSportsman Жыл бұрын
It really depends on the specific property. The most I've gone in is over 3 miles on really big pieces but I've run into people back there too. Other places the land next to the road between parking lots is really good. And then often areas half to maybe 1.5 miles in that are simply overlooked or walked past can be good. Sometimes it takes a lot of trial and error to find those.
@HuntingNoobie Жыл бұрын
I hear that a lot, but I guess I just don't want to believe it haha. What are some key things you're looking for when identifying "over looked" spots? Is it really thick stuff? Would it be best to hunt those locations mornings or evenings?
@2cthetruth Жыл бұрын
Hi. I don’t go in far at Al…most time stay 1/4 mile or closer to the roads/ parking lot. It seems like it shouldn’t work but I see a lot of deer. I got my buck within 75 yards of a county highway which was 100 yards or so from where the parking lot was. I look for really thick/swampy areas that meet open hardwoods. Finding areas where young trees that are growing close together that meet open timber is good too. The best secret I have is finding areas that I’ve mentioned with very few oaks. The key is to find the biggest oak…(preferably white but others will work too) closest to the transition. I guarantee you will have trails going from the thick and transitory edge going right to that tree. That’s your money spot. Let everyone else walk 5 miles back! If you find these spots, put in some time, you will get deer. Remember early season is best late is second choice cause no one is in the woods. Get good clothes and boots (scentloc divergent is my choice, you can get the outfit on sale if you look) and you’ll be set. Don’t skimp on quality gear. You save and buy quality stuff and it’s usually “one and done.” You settle for lesser quality, you’ll waste more money and time with repairs/ replacements over time. Hope this helps.
@HuntingNoobie Жыл бұрын
@@2cthetruth everything you've said is exactly what I've been thinking. I love hunting early and late season it seems. Finding myself hating the rut because I like to pattern deer instead of stumbling across them. I will definitely be giving these tips a try. Thanks!

The rut isn’t hard to figure out. Find the doe bedding areas and hunt the down wind side. Bucks will be there scent checking the bedding. Easy peasy.

Hi Garrett, great hunt, can you describe your gear a little? How cold was it? What was that grip on your bow? What clothes were you wearing, it seemed really quiet.

I was wearing the Thlete base layer set and Zodiak pants. Then packed in I had some prototype bibs, similar to the Sitka Incinerator, the Sitka Fanatic jacket and neck gaiter, and the first lite tundra brimmed beanie. Gloves were from Shivershield. I had the bowmar grip tape on the bow. It's similar in function to tennis racket tape. Temps here were in the teens but would have warmed up to the 20s plus some wind.

Nice explanation as to why you felt confident in that angle. Can I ask what anatomy got the arrow? 1 lung and heart?

The arrow went above the heart but appeared to slice sections of both lungs, a couple pencil sized blood vessels, diaphragm, center of the liver, and guts before going through the leg.

Gives the meat some flavor…
@wampire1284 Жыл бұрын
Nice. I always wondered if it was possible to get parts of both lungs on a frontal shot. I took a steep close shot at a doe quartering away last year at like 8 yards and I aimed for the heart because I wasn’t convinced I could get a double lung. Missed the heart by 2” but hit the main artery just in front and above leading to the carotid. Same result. Massive spray and crashed out in 6 seconds.

@DIYSportsman Жыл бұрын
It depends. During the rut if the action continues to stay hot I'll hunt several sits back to back from the same tree until I feel like I need to move based on the wind or compounded pressure is changing the activity. But outside the rut, maybe 1-3 total sits throughout the season in any given spot. Usually the first time in is the best opportunity.
