It has been a long cold winter up at my off the grid homestead, but in this video we are passing the time with some exciting projects up at camp. I bought some exciting new things that I was eager to test and try. I am looking forward for the winter to be over so we can get into some serious projects and I have been spending a lot of time figuring out exactly what that will be!
Welcome to Traplines and Inlines, this channel focuses on my dog and I on our remote Off the Grid Homestead in Northern Canada. I make videos on off grid homesteading and building, trapping, chickens, mechanical projects, and hunting and fishing.
I went offgrid and started building my cabin over two years ago, while I was still in highschool. Since then I have built many things at the homestead and have had the priviledge of learning many things along the way.
The homestead is designed to be relatively low maintenance and with extremely minimal expenses. All of my electricity comes from solar power, heat from woodstoves, and I haul all my water so I dont have any monthly costs associated with my homestead.
I love the lifestyle, especially because it gives me the absolute freedom to do whatever I please. I plan on continuing to tackle awesome projects and work at building and fixing many more things, and I cant wait to share them with you on the channel.
Thanks for watching!

I have a small welder and I was blowing breakers, so I started using a thicker construction extension cord. I think it is 12 gauge? Way thicker then a normal cord. But after using that cord I didn't blow breakers much anymore. Hope that helps.

Have you thought about using old downhill skis as runners on the sled. You can find them free, have curved front tips to help cut through the snow and the metal edges will hold up for along time. As always another great video. Keep safe.

The proper way to set your tension on the welding wire is to back it off all the way until it won't feed, then slowly tighten it up until it starts feeding properly then hold your gun in front of a block of wood or 2x4 squeeze the trigger and if the wire slips when it hits the wood but flows out when not in front of the wood your set.

i That's so cool, I'm building myself a log cabin to live in, I'm 67 and lost my right arm when I was 34 yr old in the coal mines and then contracted terminal neck cancer about 15 yr ago and ended up losing my voice to a botched 12 hr surgery. Since I was going crazy sitting on my ass I bought a Norwood Frontier 027 bandsaw mill last Nov. for $4000 and been cutting 5"x12"x12' logs for the past couple weeks and have about half of them cut (25) plus a lot of 2" and 1" boards for my build. I currently live in a 5th wheel and let me tell ya, this winter has been a cold one waking up to 45-55 degree temps inside so what the hell, building myself a 12'x24' dovetail log home that I can live in and die in with some dignity. Love your channel but hate KZbin and everything they do to people because of politics but I digress. Stay safe but most of all be happy brother.

Great to see another video from you , a welder is definitely a nice tool to have , be careful of those little balls of molten red metal rolling off the area you are welding , they tend to have a life of their own rolling on the floor everywhere. Sure hate to hear you burnt down ya skinning/work shop . It’s good to see you stocking up on things as you can afford to. Stay safe & keep doing you , I think I can speak for all your viewers when I say we love your slang & attitude , worst case Ontario 👍👍 , best regards from Newfoundland !!! Man I would love to see you build a cabin!!!! So glad you might be considering it. I love your build videos. I still go back and watch the little camp build. If you haven't seen them already I would like to recommend watching Kyle's cabin. He has a great little build and little cabin work shop. Also Shawn James. He has a couple cabin build. His main build channel is my self reliance. Nic rechavic is building a beautiful cabin as well. Shawn James has a great way of hoisting large logs by himself. Have a great day in the Bush. Looking forward to the next one.

If your generator has a 220v socket and the welder will work on 220, wire the welder plug for 220 and you'll get twice the juice from the generator and then you can max the welder. If the gen has a 220 socket and tou're using 110 you're only getting half of the power the gen can deliver. I also put on a larger gauge and longer AC cord on the welder to get more reach from the current bush. Even my little Lincoln does not work well on 110. Even the cheap MIG and plasma cutter works great on 220 with bigger power cords. I bought the biggerbulk off the roll power cable at Home Depot as well as the grommets to get it into the cabinet and the plug. You can also make a heavy duty extension cord with the same cable. A fat extension cord helps especially if you can't run 220

Lincoln or Miller have a welding app for your phone. It has handy things like you can input the thickness of your metal, what kind of wire you’re using and it’ll calculate the speed and voltage settings you should set to properly weld your material.

Hey just so you no if you tighten up the nobbes on the side of your helmet it won’t fall down as easy when you put it up!! But just be careful not to over tighten where you strip the nobbes out!! For your wire speed as you are welding just start to make it feed faster until the wire starts to push against your work and then just turn the speed down just a little and you should be good!! I used to use a flux core welder when I was much younger and didn’t have much money but now I definitely run a 220 welder 400Amp gas welder and absolutely love the performance of it much better!! But with not having a bigger generator it definitely can be hard to run a 220 welder instead of a 110!! Good luck buddy and hopefully those couple tips might help you out!! I definitely made lots of different little things for me to sell to others!!

Love the video! Can i ever relate! A bolt on my snowplow for the quad ripped right out of metal. I was tired of borrowing a welder so i bit the bullet and bought a flux core last week. As you were pulling all the acessories out from Canadian tire.. I bought all the same stuff minus the gloves. Almost the same auto-darkening helmet. Im pretty happy with the purchase even though i felt guilty for spending at first. But its so useful.

Great video.... The welder will come in very handy for you.... Just watch what you are doing in the shop... Those sparks can fly a lot further than one would think... Paper, cardboard, furs, gas cans, rags, etc .. are like a magnet for welding sparks... Have fun, be safe. Oh.... one more thing.... Stay the hell away from the two dollar hookers... Actually staying away from all of them would be best... Lol

Just wanted to comment on the skimmer. We used skimmer for a long time to haul gas and food what not in the mountains, long distances. Some times there is gravel depending on the time of year etc. Its not cheap, but using 3 teflon uhmw (same white plastic they use on the underbelly of jet boats) plastic runners works well slides awesome and lasts a very very long time. It will make your skimmer last a lot longer, and you can haul more weight(make sure your hitch is up to the challenge)
