It would be good if you also mentioned and showed in your illustrations that a Barlow will also increase the F ratio and therefore the amount of light, so images become dull or less contrasty when using a Barlow.

Your videos have a habit of being well made (video & audio quality), the content is also thought out and presented in an easy to understand format. Keep up the good work! With regard to Barlow lenses, I have found that the GSO 2.5x Apochromatic Barlow is a great bargain at just under $50, it is much better than the assorted $20 achromatic Barlows. And, IMHO on my slow scope give the $100+ Barlows a run for their money. The only caveat is that as many on Cloudy Nights have stated, it's closer to 2.2x and not 2.5x magnification.

I bought a GSO 2x "Shorty" Achromatic Barlow that the elements can be unscrewed and it used as an extender, but one element can be screwed directly onto the eye piece giving approx. 1.5x. What a deal, 1.5x and 2x and for $36 and excellent views and I mean excellent.

Now I've been in the hobby for a year I found looking at the Moon you should use a polarizing filter instead of three different Moon filters since it will let 40% of light through down to 2%, which of course is too dark. I bought a 6" reflector at a pawn shop for $125 that came with the 2x Tele Vue Barlow. The Barlow was in a case and in perfect condition and worth a little more than the scope it came with. Guy at the pawn shop didn't know much about optics as previously I'd bought a Burris 60mm 15x-45x zoom spotting scope for $35 in very good condition. It actually has a scope ring instead of the 1/4-20 camera mount bolt, which it has as well.

In reading some of the comments about Barlows I see that some have went one step higher and got the 2x -2in televu Powermate. Barlows are good just don't buy a cheap one,you'll regret it. Remember this you all garbage in garbage out. Spend the couple extra $ you will only need to do it once and the rewards will pay off 2 fold. I've had mine since 2008 alone with a Paracor for my 8in and 14 in dobs. Best money ever spent. I'm not blowing my own whistle I just want to make all of you aware of a little extra goes a long way for the future,because those two accessory will last a life time for any 2 in. focuser scope.

I own several Televue Eyepieces and am really impressed by their build quality and performance. I'm sure the 2x Powermate is about as good as it gets in terms of barlows/focal extenders. I do think for someone just getting into the hobby a 50 to 75 dollar "budget barlow" is a smarter option for the eyepieces that may have come with their new telescope before diving into something like a $350,2 inch powermate or a $500 Parracor 2. But you are correct, if this is a lifetime hobby for someone those can be great investments!

So when i was debating on what eyepiece to get...willing to spend up to $300 for one. I noticed there wasn't a straight answer from the community at large. Everyone had a different eye piece that was "the best". So after a little digging, i decided to save some money and get a diverse range with a celestron 24mm-8mm zoom eyepiece with a 2x barlow for about $150. FOV ranged from 60-40 degrees. while not the best views possible, it gives me range to decide from with each object i view. I use this eyepiece w/ OIII filters and UHC filters...and i pretty much have free range of the night sky. and can even do planets. b/c of this cheap $150 investment...i now know that my next eyepiece i buy will a wide FOV (>70 degrees) 2in eyepiece of 30mm or greater...b/c some objects are way too massive to see with a 24mm, 60deg eye piece. I offer this advice to others

I've always wondered what the limits and or penalties there are for using a Barlow lens, especially the higher magnification ones. Say you used a 5x (iirc that's the biggest I've seen) lens but didn't exceed the limit of your scope, what would happen? Or a hypothetical 10x? As for the piece itself, the Svbony 2x I have has a really nice feature that uses a copper ring to clamp down around your eyepiece when you tighten the thumb screw. It makes a huge difference imo. Not only does it keep from scratching your eyepiece, it's more secure and keeps things better aligned. I can't recommend that feature enough.

That's a good question. My guess is the more you shift the focal length of your telescope going from a 2x to 3x to 4x etc. the more you run the risk of altering the light path too much. Not sure what the ramifications would be. Maybe tough focus leading to a soft image. Svbony is making some killer products. I'm about to test out a light pollution filter they sent me for deep sky imaging once the Moon gets out of the way.

I'm learning a lot from all your astronomy videos. One question about Barlow.. If I have an f5 refactor that's prone to chromatic aberrations, then buy a Barlow that allows for it to function as an f10, should I expect (almost) the same amount of chromatic aberrations at a given magnification, say 150x (out of both the f5 with Barlow and an f10 with native long focal length ?

That's a great question. My best educated guess is that the chromatic aberrations would be the same for a fast f5 scope regardless of using a Barlow or not but it can help to flatten the field of view for shaper stars across the view.

Hi Mike, I was just gifted a 10” explore scientific. My family and I have been going through the lenses with the Moon, Jupiter and Saturn. I’m not really sure what this telescope can do but enjoying finding out. Without a Barlow lens we can just make out Saturns rings with a Meade 8-mm to 24-mm zoom. Would a Barlow work with the 8-mm to 24-mm zoom?

That's a great telescope. Yes, you can use a barlow lens on a zoom eyepiece. It's basically like double staking a barlow lens (since a zoom eyepiece is like an adjustable barlow lens) This could lead to some imperfections in the images but it's worth a try and a solid 2x barlow lens will be something you would want to purchase anyway! When I use a 3x Barlow lens on my Maksutov Cassegrain (1500mm focal length, 127mm aperture), I see a bright spot in the middle when taking photos with a camera. I can't see this visually, but in this case I can't really see the image in focus, or the contrast is very weak, especially with bright objects (e.g. the moon), so that it's no longer really possible to focus, and you can hardly recognize anything). With the camera the image is clearer and sharp except in the area where the bright spot is. If I don't use the Barlow lens, but instead use a longer distance (connection to the telescope + deflection + 55mm camera adapter), I can also see the bright spot even wothout barlow lense. The further I pull the camera out, the sharper the spot becomes until a ring can be seen. This is despite the fact that the object being observed can still be brought into focus. The ring looks like the small interior mirror of the Maksutov. (like looking into the telescope with the naked eye without an eyepiece and without anything) Is this normal, or is there something wrong? I've had the Barlow lens for a while, but I only noticed the spot while observing the moon with the Barlow lens. I'm not sure if I've done that before, but I don't think so. If it's normal, I'd be surprised, because that would mean that the image is actually always somewhat blurred by a very large version of the spot, even if you don't have that big of an optical path.

I would look at a 2x barlow perhaps but I don't know if that would change your ring reflection problem. Does it do this even on faint objects or just bright stars you are trying to image?

Hello there! Kindly asking the use of your experience and knowledge to save me some time. I recently just received my first telescope ever which traveled over continents and oceans, but I’ve got it and I’m not just excited but also very grateful about it! Its an : Orion SkyQuest XT8 Classic Dobsonian Reflector Telescope I also got with it the following: 25mm eyepiece, eyepiece adapter, 2x Barlow Lens & The Orion 1.25 inch 13 percent Transmission Moon 🌘 Filter. Now, I just realized I need a protection “ bag “ or cover if I wanna take it out and about to some dark observing spots away from the light pollution, so there’s a very high chance to go ahead and place another order to Orion Telescopes for it. Now since I’m gonna order again - Here’s the Q : What would be the best and most useful eyepieces I could get to let’s say - expand or make it even more versatile on top of what I posted above which is recently acquired ? Looking to invest in no more than 2 extra eyepieces - one especially dedicated to planetary and solar system observations. Budget : around the value of the telescope - which would be something between 500 - 700 USD max. I thank you a lot for your time and awesome content your creating. God bless.

You've got a great telescope. To save myself some money, I just wrap the telescope tube in a blanket/comforter when I travel with it in my car. My top choice for your telescope would be something like the Orion Edge on planetary eyepieces. Get the 12.5mm and if you use it with a 2x barlow lens you will double it's magnification. That will give you basically 100x and 200x for your telescope. I went through several cheap Barlow lens and they are always a problem. The clarity dropped and my focus were far off when switching. I got dissuaded from it until recently when the folks at cloudy nights mentioned getting a Barlow. I ended up buying a Televue 2x 2” Powermate. I have ZERO regrets shelling out money for it because I can barely tell the difference in clarity with and without it.

You made an excellent choice. I recently bought a 2x Focal Extender from Explore Scientific that I hope to do a review video on later this year. I own several Televue eyepieces and find them to be of incredible quality. If you are in this hobby for the long haul, few companies make quality products like Televue1

Im just getting into astronomy. I am getting a 130mm celestron astromaster EQ-MD (equatorial mounted with engine) my expectations are moderate (towards christmas ive been reading up and watching all kinds of videos to understand my telescope before I get to use it) What I already do have my hands on that I bought in preperation is a 2x celestron T camera adapter barlow (can be used with eyepieces too) mainly to use it with my Nikon (yes also got the ring adapter to use and it fits my camera nicely) You would think this is an OKish barlow? It seems highquality. Im not expecting it to be the best. At least I get to have the barlow the first time I use my telescope.

It has a focal point of 540 mm The aperature is 100 mm (inch 3.93) if i'm correct. 30 X 3.93 would be 117.9 the highest useful magnification. At the moment it is still standard , What would you suggest I could use to maximize it, Barlow? Eyepiece? Atb Steve

What specific telescope do you have! A 2x barlow is a pretty solid investment for almost every telescope but the eyepiece will depend a bit more on the specific telescope and its focal length.

Thanks for all the videos, new to astrophotography and looking forward to growing. My youngest daughter got me into this and really glad she did. We spend a lot of time together stargazing and it's been really fun. I do have a question about the proper config for our telescope if you or anyone can assist. We currently own the StarSense Explorer DX 130AZ, I did the math you suggested, and looks like we can use a 3X Barlow with a max mag of 7mm since the telescope's highest useful mag is 307x this combo totals to 278.57x. Am I correct with my math? Also, my daughter would like to use her mobile device to take photos of planetary objects, would it be possible to do this and post-process as you would with a DSLR camera? We did purchase a cellular phone mount from Celestron to keep the phone lined up on the eyepiece. It's our starting point and are starting to look at camera options between DSLR and Astro cameras. Also, light pollution in our backyard has a brightness of 1.71 and bortle of class 6, we did find some class 4 areas but were wondering if a light pollution filter may help to do some viewing from our backyard as well. We're able to see Jupiter & Saturn with no problem but something like the Andromeda or any Nebulae objects won't even show up in the scope. If you have any suggestions on this it would also be great. Not trying to break the bank but would like a good starting point in photography. Thanks again for all your videos, they've been helpful in understanding and using our telescope properly.

Good questions. The most I would push your telescope is probably around 200x magnification. I got that by taking the diameter 5.1 inches and multiplying it by 40x (to represent a good clear night). I would buy a solid 6mm eyepiece for that telescope and a 2x barlow lens. That would give you around 100x and 200x magnification for your specific telescope. Look for something like the Orion 6mm Planetary eyepieces. Yes, you can connect a phone to image the moon and planets. I've got another video on that posted if you are interested. You may need to download an additional app for fine tune adjustments of things like the phone iso for example. For the Moon and planets you won't want of need a light pollution filter. I would look to get a UHC light Pollution filter like the SVBONY UHC filter on amazon. I use them in my telescope for things like the Veil Nebula. Keep up the great work and clear skies!

I'm a begginer and own the Orion Starblast Two 4.5 telescope and was wondering what Barlow lens would be best. Also, the telescope comes with 25mm and 10mm eye pieces, is there an even better one that would go well with the barlow recommendation?

I have a Orion xt10 classic. I try and use. 2 in Barlow 2x. Having trouble with focus with Orion 14 mm 2in eyepiece. The Barlow will focus with telvue panotopic. 27 mm . I like the Orion 14 mm LHD eyepiece but the focus is trying . Any ideas?

Try to move the eyepiece up a down the tube of the barlow a bit (be sure it is still tightly secured) to see if that helps a bit with focus distance. It's also possible that the design of that eyepiece is already maxing out for telescopes focus point without a barlow.

Hi! Thank you very much for your video. I just got my first telescope this week, the Explore FirstLight 102mm Doublet Refractor (f/6.47), it came with a 25mm Plossl eyepiece and I added a 9mm FMC Svbony eyepiece (68°) and a moon filter. In the near future I'm thinking on buying a barlow lens, would you recommend the GSO 1.25" 2.5x Apochromatic Barlow Lens for it? What about the combination of achromatic and apochromatic lenses, does it make any difference? My main idea is to be able to see the moon and planets in detail and get some views of the deep sky :)

A 2x barlow lens with a 9mm eyepiece in that telescope would probably push you past the limit of useful magnification on most nights. If you owned or bought a 25mm eyepiece and used a 2x barlow with it that would work well. You would then have 40x magnification without the barlow and 80c with the barlow. A good range of magnifications for a 114mm telescope!

I much prefer the doubling of the aperture in mm, as according to your method my 102 apo(4”) refractor is only 4x30=120x. This is a ridiculous maximum estimate imho.

Both are fair ways to measure it that I've come across in different books! On really clear nights I would get some nice views around 100x magnification in my old 4.5 inch reflector. Most of it honestly comes down to seeing conditions. Best of luck with your observing!

The 2x barlow included with my Celestron 80AZ scope is very cheap and definitely a weak point in the accessories. It's all plastic construction and has two lens elements, the convex lens is plastic and concave is glass. Most users would upgrade the eyepieces first but the truth is the barlow is where they've cut costs most severely. The included eyepieces I've seen so far (Celestron, Skywatcher) are all coated glass 3-element affairs and I'm yet to see a plastic lens in one of them.

Good question. If your budget allows it I would get a dedicated 12mm and 5mm eyepiece like the Orion Edge on Planetarys or something similar. If not, a 12mm and a 2x barlow will still provide some great views.

30x per inch is pretty conservative, 2x per the aperture in millimeters is what I go by, but any power over 300x requires good seeing, regardless of.aperture. I frequently get good seeing to where I.have gone 500x on 10" scopes, and even 250-300+ on 90mm maks, and 90mm should top out at 180x, but maks are notorious for being able to break those rules. And good refractors can go even farther above the 50x per inch rule. In an xt8, 300x us usually pretty easy to hit when the seeing is steady as 400x is the theoretical max. And I have been able to hit stupid high powers with 6"f8 dobs.

Note that smaller aperture scopes do better in poor seeing than larger apertures, which is another reason that 3-4" refractors and 3.5-6" maks are notorious planet killers.

That's a great question and your telescoep is very similar to an early one I started with. I would say the most useful highest magnification on most nights for your telescope will be around 120x magnification. I would suggest you look at a nice quality zoom eyepiece for that telescope to start with. Make sure it's one the doesn't go beyond 6mm (That would give you around the 120 max for most nights: 700mm Focal divided by 6mm eyepiece). I've got a video review of one type of zoom eyepiece but there are several out there on amazon and other sites depending on where you live.

A 2x barlow lens is always a nice addition to an eyepiece line. I would also consider getting a specific eyepiece for that telescope. did the 10mm and 20mm come with it? I might look at something in the 12 to 14mm range.

Hello, I have a 114/1000 astromaster with a 10 mm eyepiece (100x). I would like to buy a new eyepiece but I am undecided between an omni 6mm or a 2x barlow. Which one do you recommend to see the plants?

For that telescope I would look to get an 9 or 6mm eyepiece with a good amount of eye relief. Take a look at the Orion Edge on planetary eyepiece line or a similar one from a different brand that may cost less. Out of the two that you suggested to me I would get a solid 2x barlow lens like one mentioned in this video. It will work for this or any future telescope.

I have never owned a 2 inch barlow but it would be a nice accessory today, pretty much doubling the magnification of your 2 inch eyepiece. I believe Zhumell makes a 2 inch barlow that used to be sold on amazon.

If I am understanding your questions correctly I don't think you would want to use the 3x barlow and the 1.5x lens together. You honestly probably don't need to use the 3x barlow too often with that eyepiece lineup. You could try it on the 20mm but it will probably be too much for the 12.5 and 6.

Yes, but it's not recommended. Light scattering and quality of the optics will create a good number of imperfections in the image. It's fun to try but not recommended for regular use.

No, I don't believe that is true. Barlow's increase magnification but modern eyepieces and barlow lens coatings make it difficult to perceive a difference in brightness of a similar magnification.

@LateNightAstronomy The barlow i have definitely cuts the light down immensely. When just looking at stars with it can barely see them and when remove barlow they ar3 back to bright. Hence why its better for planets. Just my personal experience i am far from an expert. Also just using a few entry level telescopes nothing impressive and the barlow that came with one of them. Did upgrade to a zoom eyepiece which is cool. Trying to decide which computerized scope i want to buy this week any suggestion in the 1000ish $ range CDN? Looking at the nextstar vut dont like where the eyepiece is on the back. Using a newtonian now

You are correct that it is the opposite of a barlow lens. A field reducer can be nice to use if you have a telescope with a very high focal length. What type of telescope do you have?

@@LateNightAstronomy Meade LX200 8" SCT. Its old but its not the oldest model. This model has the hand controller with a small star & object database. The older model has a controller but no built in database. On the occasion I tried the field reducer, I was not able to focus the camera through it. My T-ring adapter has removable segments so I can change the length in sections. Do you know if I add the field reducer, would I need to move the camera closer or further?

Devil's advocate here. I really don't rate Barlow Lenses at all. You are just adding more glass to the light path. Better, in my opinion, to save up your pennies and spend a little extra on descent, high power eyepieces.

Thanks for your comment on this. 50 per inch is the theoretical limit but I've found 30x per inch to be much more realistic if you take into account the atmosphere. 30 x 8 inch equals 240x and 50 x 8 inch equals 400x. Nine out of ten night I'm much closer to 240x as my max versus 400x.
