Literally all those old Robin Trower albums with James Dewar on Bass and vocals is some of the finest music ever recorded. Bridge of Sighs will always be his most remembered and probably his best album. But you’re honestly missing out of you haven’t heard all the other Trower albums with Dewar.

You could spend a lifetime discovering the nuances of Trower's style and it would never get old. Each note is a gem.

Awesome! Thank you. Robin Trower's playing is best described as organically soulful; he always plays for the song and he had one of the best singer/bassists to boot in James Dewar. Love it!

I used to rehearse all day next to Robin in Southend in '85/86. His technique and feel was and is fantastic, combining rhythm, melodic construction and a total understanding of the instrument. He always used a wall of Marshalls to practice with, so he had the same set up as he would on stage. Other than that he just worked hard to get the sound he wanted from himself and the band. The bass player then was Dave Bronze - a great player with again amazing ability, technique and feel. I'm seeing Robin in Islington in May (2024) and look forward to hearing those sounds I remember well from 1986.

To me Trower's guitar was an essential part of Procol Harum. I once went to their concert in Aarhus - high on cannabis - and I felt I was - telepathically - directing Trower's guitar-playing throughout the concert - or part of it! Have others had similar experiences?
@michaelm2984 жыл бұрын
Great to see Trower get some recognition for a change; he's my all time favorite guitarist and these are some nice lick examples. One correction to make: Trower didn't join Procol Harum until after White Shade of Pale was recorded. Ray Royer was the guitarist on that track.

huge Trower fan here and I have covered many of his songs in bands I play with. a good friend of mine and I would sit around and listen to Trower records when were in our youth (I'm 62 now) and were amaze by his playing and song craft. One thing I remember and I think it is an excellent description of his phrasing, but my friend use to describe some of Robin's frenzied solos and runs as "falling or tumbling down the stairs". and that is a great "visual description" IMO.... he does these "rolling" type fills and phrases that are truly unique to him and his style. Saw him several times in Dallas over last 5 years and he can still burn. looks like your grandpa but he has not slowed down a bit and puts on one heck of a show.

Trower in my opinion is the greatest British blues player of all time bar none! ...and the are "a plenty" of them to be assured that could be an argument for that coveted spot. He's got that Mojo though that the rest just don't have. Seeing him live...Hearing him live...is an experience unto itself. That tone he get's...the phrasing. It's just extraordinary to say the least. For me "Bridge Of Sighs" is one of my all time favorite albums, a desert island album for sure. Albeit a winter type of album:) When you do the Chordplay for Robin it would be cool if you could give us some insight to what he's doing on "Secret Place" from 20th Century Blues. It's some of the most lush and interesting chord changes I've heard from him yet. And that's saying a lot. Loved the lesson...can't wait for the follow up lesson!!!!!!

David, if you need to replicate feedback at a low volume, there's a pedal that does it. I had one a while back and traded it off. I just looked it up to remember what it was and it was a Digitech Freqout. Doesn't matter how quiet your amp is it'll do it. I don't really have to worry about volume to an extent anymore.

I saw trower about 7 years ago at the house of blues in Orlando. I was tripping on acid and got front row next to an asian man named Jackie chan that was just as excited as me to be there as I was. It was an unbelievable show. I've heard that trower changed his style of guitar playing after hearing Jimi Hendrix. Trower felt Jimi played the guitar the way it should be played

I read in a Guitar Player interview that he stopped using a whammy bar after hearing what Hendrix did with it. He began developing his distinctive vibrato technique at that time.

Try the Digitech FreqOut pedal for getting great feedback at low volume. It works fine!
I get feedback on demand at the lowest level (-16dB) on my Hotplate attenuator with my Marshall Origin 20-C and '76 Strat. It's not really loud, but the master is cranked. I use my compressor and fuzz face, but neither is dimed. It's not all about volume... gain and frequency play a role. Sometimes I start it off by cocking my wah just at the peak and then switch it off once the feedback is going. It's a matter of finesse and the whole system, actually. Or you can just deafen yourself... but we care about your ears!

Perhaps I’m talking out of my ass here, but it seems the burst on your strat is much more orange/ginger in color and much closer to the perimeter than almost every Strat I’ve seen....to a large degree. My LP is in a finish called cinnamon burst and is almost comparable to yours.
