I love the constant roasting of Tim Cook every time you mention Apple claiming this machine is totally obsolete.
@fridaycaliforniaa2364 ай бұрын
It's well deserved, yes ^^
@gemini621675 күн бұрын
Yes, and since Mr. Cook has proven himself to be quite the Microsoft educated businessman! Apple's long list of malfeasance since he came aboard as well as the sad lacking of any truly new and innovative anythings compared to Job's return to Apple, should have been enough to turn off many who still swear by Apple. Apple's machines have become mostly entertainment based ever since. From solely a business/profit motive that makes good sense, being that the vast percentage of users do mostly nothing other than stream content, books, play games (as limited as Apple machines can achieve). But from a computing stand point, Apple places so many limitations on what a user can do with them that unless you do not need anything more than the native apps, you will soon find out you've purchased an expensive mountain of frustrations. And yes, for the masses that may be just enough. My biggest complaint is how Apple has used the excuse of soldering down the components of its architecture to eliminate any upgrades to their machines unless you're willing to pay outrageously for them, and only at time of purchase. Apple states on their order page, that they must be done then for once out the door even Apple will not upgrade them later. There is no justification for the amounts they charge for those upgrades and there really was no reason to go with an architecture to eliminate their possibility other than to be able to use it as a convenient excuse and then gouge it's devoted followers who it seems are more than willing to go along with it. Pretty and elegant as the operating system is... I no longer feel it is worth the icky, dirty, prostituted feeling I get from handing over so much money for what is becoming less and less as the years pass. To only have two ports (four if you upgrade) on the new iMacs is hideous. This particular model 2012, has six, plus a card reader, and Ethernet. That and 1T HD, whereas the base models today come with a measly 256G, as if it's still the late 1990s.

The way I managed to get this working was by: Installing Mint 22 (which from my experience is just more stable and compliant to shenanigans), Running the Nvidia legacy driver patch (a tool that lets you force-install the older Nvidia drivers on newer kernels), and configuring the power-management features of the proprietary driver (i.e. telling it to always be used and in constant maximum performance mode, as by default it assumes a power balanced mode more useful for laptops that tends to be unstable on these newer kernels). Other than an occasional weird behavior where a single line of pixels on the right side of the screen rolls a bit (you'll see what I mean when it happens to you), it's been very stable. Highly recommend.
@andreasascherl20185 ай бұрын
I solved my Nvidia problems with manually installing Nvidia driver version 470 in Linux. The automatic detection did not offer a proprietary driver, as version 390 is not compatible with Mint 22. I am using Mint 22 on my 2010 iMac 27", which has a patched GTX 780M, as my main machine. It also has dual boot with Sonoma using OpenCore. I don't have Steam installed, but Davinci Resolve works and that also requires the proprietary driver in Linux.

However, I mostly just use it with Windows 11 now. It’s currently at my girlfriend's parents' place, in her old childhood bedroom, where we use it as a TV (27" is 27"^^). Sadly, the batteries are pretty degraded, but I upgraded the RAM to 32 GB and the SSD to 4 TB (I didn't have an 8 TB SSD hanging around at the time and it's a PITA to upgrade the SSD inside its cage for this model). Sadly for some people, despite having a TPM 2.0 chip (because it was a ThinkPad) it still can't "officially" run Windows 11 because the CPU is a 7th gen Intel CPU, but given I don't use Windows anymore, that's fine by me! More Linux for me, especially given these things were hard to find! One could, in a VM use SteamOS/Proxmox Gpu passtthrough. This way you setup once, and add to multiple devices. Even a G5 with Qemu, (or your dedicated Haiku box), etc. Less headache, not at the mercy of whatever idiosyncrasy a given OS has.

Using Arch if you use the linux-lts kernel while running the archinstall script everything will work correctly as this uses the 6.6 kernel you were trying to use here and is still fully supported. Be careful when choosing your desktop environment as wayland does not work at all on cards older than the 900 series.

Oh and also be careful while using the archinstall script itself, it gives you the option to use proprietary nvidia drivers but these will install the latest 560 drivers instead of the 390 you need for this old card. You need the 380xx-dkms modules off AUR. Or you can use a 3rd party tool like nvidia-all from frogging family. Make sure you manually install the linux-lts-headers package or nvidia-all will retrieve and use the regular linux-headers package and build against 6.10 which will fail silently.

try the 470 driver, I'm using a similar era 2013 MacBook pro with a 750m and it works great

Hi mate, regarding the issue with the Nvidia Drivers, it is caused by the weird Apple EFI implementation. For it to work correctly, the system need to be installed in pure BIOS mode, wich needs a little bit more thinkering. on the other side, Opencore Legacy could help by giving the computer up to date EFI variables. You might wanna try the BIOS Method first. Cheers from Quebec.

I found a 2009 older iMac for... 30 $. It runs... without any problems!

It would be a lot easier to patch old nvidia driver to last kernel on arch and dkms it.

You should try the Pop os image with the NVidia drivers built in. I'm not a personally a fan of pop but it does make it easy.

@ActionRetro i think you can make nvidia drivers work if you look at arch's aur as there are old nvidia drivers. In the packages there are usually patches and applying them on uncompressed stock nvidia drivers should make them work on newer kernels.

You should use a distro other than Ubuntu, just to shake things up a bit

Couple of days ago I booted a 2011 MacBook Pro into Linux Mint 22, and I was just remembering to go hunt for an Ethernet cable when I saw that the Broadcom driver was already installed. Maybe not FOSS pure, but really convenient. At about 4:00 I had a hearing bug and thought you said you were applying spermal paste. That segued nicely into the censored shots.
