Thanks for the review. It would make the review of the drill chuck be of more use if you were to say what you didn't like about it. Is it inaccurate, that is to say it doesn't hold things perfectly centered? Does it deflect too easily when pressure is applied from the side? Or, does it not open and close smoothly? Etc. Being off center or deflecting too easily are far worse sins than opening and closing roughly. One suggestion, when using a drill chuck, it's best practice to hold it with your hand. This will prevent it from spinning in the tailstock's Morse Taper, which can gall the taper. It will also prevent the drill chuck from being pulled out of the tailstock when you withdraw the quill.

Looks like your tails stock is not engaging with the key ant rotating. That chuck key will behave a bit better when that is corrected.

Thanks for the info. I just met a 90 year old man yesterday. He took me into his shop and showed this young man, myself a 66 year old kid some of his lathe tools, wood stock and projects. He said if I have any questions or have need any answers to come by, say hello and he will help me with any questions I may have. We spent about 90 minutes talking about wood turning. On my way out he gave me some nice pieces of spalted maple and said I could get more wood if I needed. He had the high end Powermatic lathe, bandsaw equipment and well over $3,500.00 in lathe chisels, gouges and knives. On the other hand, I bought an absolutely like new older Delta lathe that appeared to never have been used at an estate sale. The lathe I own can only turn an 11.5" bowl and about a 42" spindle. Speed changes are done by moving the belt from pulley to pulley. And my knives and gouges are a $39.00 set from Harbor Freight. I definitely need to buy some decent knives. Any recommendations for a set of decent tools that will get the job done without the 'dick-wagger' premium price? I used to own every toy I wanted. I owned airplanes, boats, dirt bikes, street bikes, motor homes and spent money on recreation activities like drunken adrenaline junkie. Now we are retired with okay pensions, no debt and a little nest egg. But with Biden/Trump Uni-Party inflation, who knows what the future for the economy holds. I am reluctant to piss away too much of our money on higher end equipment when I can get by with a less expensive stuff. Before, I always bought the best or at least did not settle on lower end stuff. But now in my twilight years I have learned to save and make do with what I have or adequate equipment. So that is why I am here looking at a Harbor Freight chuck for my older Delta lathe that I bought last year at an estate sale for $325.00. I just want to say thank you for the safety advise and the tip about talking to other wood turners about the hobby. Besides learning to be a bit more thrifty(I still spend a little too much, but I am learning), I have learned to be much safer than I used to be in my younger days. I am not pedantic, but I do take many more precautions as far as safety gear. I still can do a better job though. At least, on occasion I wear gloves now, put jack stands under our vehicles when doing a brake job or oil change, wear safety glasses when grinding or cutting wood or metal and wear a respirator when working in a dust or particle filled shop or room when painting or running my lathe. I know two men who both lost an eye splitting wood with an ax and almost every person I saw who was missing part of a finger lost it on a radial arm saw. As far as my biggest pet peeve is ladder safety, but that is whole separate conversation. I do not mess around on ladders or ladder safety as I grew older. Ladder safety and electrical hazards are the big killers sources of death or injury around the trades.

I’ve tried too many budget chucks over the past 6 or 7 months and I give up. Some were bad from the start. Some failed after a few uses. Some seem to be ok but I just don’t get clean results. I’ve given up and gone back to the Nova chucks. The Bauer might be a good one but I’m done testing the more budget friendly options. Life’s too short to drink cheap beer.

Did it not have a set screw to secure it to the spindle? Most aftermarket wood lathe chucks come with a threaded hole in the spindle mount, and a plastic or dense rubber slug that drops in the hole. A set screw is then inserted, and it binds up on the spindle threads without damaging them. On lathes that have a reverse feature, it’s HIGHLY recommended that the chuck be secured like this to prevent it from being unintentionally backed off and exiting the machine! Many users prefer the reverse rotation for finish sanding, for reasons unknown to me! Thanks for showing us this thing. I saw it in HF a couple days ago for the first time!

The metal in these chucks is too soft for more than only occasional use They'll wear out and loosen up and eventually the jaws won't close concentrically. The entry level Nova chucks (Midi, G3) really aren't much more expensive and will last for years.

I work for harbor frieght. They also have a bauer lathe tool set. Very good steel.(HSS). The only thing I wish they added was a wooden case for it. The tools come loosely in the box. So for 89 bucks you get high quality set. Cost as much as a radius skew by raffan.

This a Chinese copy of the Nova Lathe Chuck I bought at the local Rockler store yesterday for $159 minus 20% coupon I received in the mail. Y’all do the math and figure out if it’s worth giving your money to the CCP.

I agree with you it is a cheap Chinese knock off. But not of any Nova chuck. I have a Titan, 2 SN2s, a G3 and a Precision Midi. It uses a different key and has a metal back.

The issue with these off brand chucks is the jaw availability. As long as the two jaw sets that came with it are adequate for your uses then it is a good buy for a mini lathe. However if you need different jaws where would you get them? I have a Nova Titan III and a Nova Super Nova 2 and have literally 20 different jaw sets for various operations. A second thing about that chuck is no set screws to lock the chuck on if you turn in reverse. When turning in reverse without the locking set screws the chuck can literally fly off the spindle. Your mini lathe may not turn in reverse but many lathes do. Obviously $100.00 is a good price for the chuck but it is limited in what it can do with only two sets of jaws. Although the Nova, Oneway, and other higher price chucks give you a lot more options for jaws at a price. So I think for a mini lathe like you were using that chuck would work. Most of the Chinese knock off chucks usually are compatible with other brands of chucks for the jaw hold on screws spacing. The only other concern I have is at $100.00 what is the quality of the internal gears that tighten and loosen the jaws. Will it wear out prematurely? So even with the cheap price is the longevity of the chuck worth the price if you have to replace it every year or two? Good luck with your new toy. As others commented below get your sleeves rolled up and use paper towels and not cloth and do not use both hands when applying finish. If you get the cloth or your sleeve caught on the edge of the jaws you will wish you had heeded the warnings. I suppose that the chuck is a 1" 8 TPI thread and would be fine on a mini lathe but I would not put that chuck on a bigger lathe even if it had a 1" 8TPI thread. The power of a mini lathe compared to a 16" swing and bigger motor would concern me. Harbor Freight makes tools that are what the advertise it for but it is just barely what the tool is advertised for. Bauer is HF's own brand and frankly I would not bet my life on a HF tool. Make no mistake you are betting your life on that chuck every time you use it or any other brand of chuck. 😉
