Did the KBC sound a little loose somewhere? The piece got tight putting it into the key slot. Think there was movement of the vice?
@Frankodilla

@@rogerscottcathey no it’s not loose just the machine might be slightly tilting with the weight shifting as the table moves if the gibs have any slack. But that machine sounded good. I’d chock it up to the compound having a slight taper in the t slot.

Adam, I found out that my Multifix size E couldn’t stop rotating until I put the dowel pin. I used a M6 stud bolt as a dowel pin, as the fit was really tight and made it removable, which turned out years later to be the salvation for mounting my recently acquired toolpost grinder. Your work quality makes me feel ashamed of mine’s!

Great video! Interesting point about the 0.003" off parallel. I wonder if the dovetail slides are also off parallel, or if they are true to the bottom. I would have checked that before deciding how to do the top with the new tee nut. I also wonder if this technique might be advantageous when mounting other types of tool posts. I designed my own with a broad, circular base that straddles the slot in the compound but now I am wondering if this mounting technique might make it more rigid.

I'm suspecting that the 0.003" [0.0762mm] was well within the manufacturing tolerance for the compound slide housing. that's seldom a truly precision ground surface. I'd be checking the bottom surface of the rotating base first a little bit more for parallelism and flatness, as that's a machined surface and can be slightly out since it wasn't ground. Only after I was sure about the base would I go after the top, checking my setup as I go along. Tolerances stck up (add up) so a couple of items being off by a few 0.0002" or so, plus some gapping, can add up to a couple of mils (thousandths of an inch). Basically, it boils down to how close do you want / need the final result to be, and how much careful attention to detail you are willing to spend to get there.

I'm an inexperienced hobbyist so I might be overlooking something. However, I was wondering if you measured the compound thickness on both sides or, the vice slides that the parallels are sitting on to validate that the shimming is the correct answer. I have yet see the rest I'm only at the 19:34 minute mark. Enjoying the show.
@scott241966

I was thinking the same thing. I watched the rest of the video because I wanted to see if I was missing something too. Would it have been better to verify the the parallels are true to the mill, set the compound in the vice, then deck the whole compound? Then the top surface of the compound would be parallel to the bottom. Like you, I also enjoy all of Adam's videos!

Sorry for the question, I am still learning. Would it have made more sense to have gone with a coarser thread to the T-Nut, and a Fine 1/2" 20tpi for the hold down nut? The thread to the T-Nut was fine, but the thread where you want the most clamping force was coarse.

Wouldn't it be beneficial to use a Needle Roller Thrust bearing and Hardened washer, just below the flange on top nut? Would actually direct all forces to increase downward force to tighten the Tool Post body?

So, my question is, did you measure the thickness on both sides of the slide to see if it was the same? I can see why you shimmed it to replicate the top's original plane. But if it was out of parallel originally from the factory, wouldn't you want to correct that?

@@SteveColluns-hm2xx That's quite the leap. 548,000+ People would probably disagree with your sentiment. I've seen all but three or four of his videos, they're primarily about the process of machining and repair with a touch of machine restoration and light fabrication. Just because he doesn't do in-depth explanation on things few people feel require a high level of detail doesn't mean he lacks the knowledge. Small job shop machinists tend to have a better level of knowledge of what does and doesn't work in the real world than 90% of the rest of the world.

@@SteveColluns-hm2xx Ah, i don't know. I like him. I suspect the 0.003 was in the dovetail geometry. It makes. a lot of sense to just leave it there, rather than embark on a crude compensation for it. If he has a whole bunch of spare time someday, maybe go back and make a change that probably won't make any actual difference in how the thing behaves. Hmph. People come along and think they know everything; sometimes I wonder if they're just trying to find a way to improve their own self-esteem. I also wonder if they're quite as perfect as they seem to imply. Another approach is to assume everybody gets a chance to do it the way they want, without a bunch of other people doing quite so much armchair quarterbacking.
