it's a valid reaction, but I converted an existing bike to an ebike and ride it much more than I used to as a "regular" bike. I also commute to work as often as possible. I give it full throttle and pedal all the way and get quite a bit of excercise, plus I'm saving gas money and helping the environment. You really do get a lot more excercise than you'd think!

it rains a lot here, so my motor did eventually rust and needed to be replaced (around $300), but that's still pretty minor compared to what I used to spend maintaining my cars/motorcycles. My electric bike actually got me into far better cycling shape than when I just rode my road bike, because I started riding _everywhere_ instead of taking the bus/motorcycle, and cycling a few days a week. Now I mostly ride it in crap weather, and ride my road bike when it's nice.

I like the idea of pedaling to help push you along. Seems to be good for places that have a lot of hills and are so hard to climb, one would sweat so much, it would be bad to transition to work in an office setting.

The E-bike is NOT a toy. It helps a lot of elderly people in the Netherlands to remain mobile and exercise to stay healthy. It is true that a young, healthy person don´t need one in flat terrain. It is useful when you have to climb a gradient.

Electric pedal assisted bikes are great commuters. You can get to work without arriving a sweaty mess. You can go twice as far while pedaling and maintain a much higher average speed. I'm 50 now and my pedelec bike makes me feel like it used to ride twenty five years ago. While pedaling the whole time you can nearly double the power and range.

It costed me about $1000 to convert my Gary Fisher mountain bike. It's a 1000W motor with a 48v 20ah LiFePO4 battery from golden oasis. With pedaling (which I always do) I can max it around 35 mph and thanks to the motor I can maintain a 30+ mph speed to work and back. Pretty awesome.

Amazing! Not ONE time I have seen this lady making ANY attempt letting other road users know that she was making a turn. Guess that is the modern way of using the roads, who cares about others as long as I am ok. Price for such a simple bike is crazy too

You're right, I went back and they clearly assembled them on the wrong side. The wording is upside down. Easy fix, and I think I could enjoy this ride. I'd pedal in the beginning and then switch over to electric when I got tired.

Originally the modern bicycle (from the late 19th century) was not designed for exercise or for sport.It was designed for personal transportation as a replacement for a horse which has to be fed,needs a stall or barn and is messy (poop).It's really a mechanical horse much as an automobile is a horseless carriage.One can utilize an electric bike for exercise too though.Makes it easier to climb hills or to carry extra cargo or pull a heavy loaded trailer.

That throttle mounted backwards is kind of a bodge. That's a standard electric bike throttle which is meant to go on the right side with the thumb down, as you would expect it to be. They obviously elected to put it on the opposite side in order to mount the control for the nuvinci CVT hub in the standard position. I think I would either mount the shifter knob upside down on the left bar, and put the thumb shifter in the standard position.

@3:00 Notice how it's "upside-down". Simply place it on the right handle, "right-side up" and the throttle lever will be just how you like it.

If you're already a hardcore cyclist who rides everywhere they go, that's cool. You probably won't gain much from getting an electric. Honestly, if I didn't already have one, I probably wouldn't bother now that I'm in decent shape and can do a hilly 30km ride on my road bike to visit friends on a whim, but a the time I bought it, it allowed me to use my bike for things that I never would have otherwise. I think it was money well spent.

At first i think it was nice then heard the charge-able batery can it be that magnet wheel and with a direct connection with the old small dynamo system that was used to give light at night-time can this has a potesial avoiding of using batery? Theory: of None batery el-bikes just a direct connection to the dynamo?

Looks like you have the throttle on the wrong side. That's why the text is facing away from you and you have to try push it wrong. Try change it to the right handlebar and that should fix it...

By Swedish rules it is considered a motorbike/moped if you don't need to pedal. Where is the line drawn in the US? Doesn't seem to be one

It does have a nuvinci hub, and good lithium batteries can be expensive, but I expect you're paying a good chunk of money for the artsy looking frame. To be fair, if this enables you to use a bicycle as your primary vehicle in place of a car, it won't take long for it to pay for itself. I've built up my own (better) electric bike from parts, and put about 10000km on it in the first year.

My big issue is that it's trying to reinvent the bicycle. There is nothing wrong with the classic pedal powered safety bicycle. The only thing this has going for it is the motor to help you go up steep hills. If you get into shape and have a low enough gear, you don't need a motor. If you absolutely need a motor get an electric motor for a regular bike. Also, this looks like it doesn't have any options for carrying stuff. Since it has an odd frame, you can't stick a rack on the back.

When you steer right, you should have your left (outside pedal) down. Turning with the inside pedal down, you're gonna strike the pavement sooner or later and the result won't be pretty

It's a convention on motorbikes that the right hand controls the FRONT brake and the throttle. Why not have it that way around? It makes more sense and then that thumb-throttle thingy would be in a better place. As for the batteries? It seem that their location, ie: lower down, has been sacrificed for aesthetics.

As if $2500 (£1500) isnt a lot of money - its a ridiculous amount of money for a bike with an electric motor. Bike - £100 Electric motor £50 Total £150 There is NO reason why a mass produced electric bike can not be produced for £150 $250 other than greed. In UK I could buy a used car for £500, I could buy THREE used cars for the price of that bike with an electric motor. Its just not viable for most people.

As a cyclist I can't help but ask what the hell is the point. I can get an actual Road bike that can go faster under my own power for 1/4 of the price. I can also get a decent used motorcycle that hits speeds of 100+ on craigslist for that price or less. So this is pointless innovation. Its not clean energy unless the electricity provided for charging is from solar or wind.

I can imagine riding a bike in very cold weather. I live in WA state and have ridden my bike in cold weather. They make studded bike tires for winter use. A google search for "bicycle canada winter" lead me to a youtube video of a woman showing off her winter bike and clothing. For the desert it's just a matter of the right clothing and proper hydration. I just found a group that does mountain biking in the Sonoran desert. Climate isn't as big of an issue as some might think.

I suspect that whoever assembled your bike did so incorrectly. The throttle unit shown at 2:45 on the left hand side of your bars has the words and the thumb control upside down. Would solve your problem to switch sides with gear selector and throttle. And make the words readable. :) Thanks for the review though.

I am not against large trucks for transporting goods, provided they are powered by an alternative fuel. What I am against is motor vehicles for PERSONAL transportation. If you need to move your self and your stuff, it can be done by bike. Most if not all of the petroleum products I use could be made out of hemp or other renewable sources. Ford once made a car with a body made of bio plastic, made from soy if I remember right. I try to avoid petroleum products, but it's hard to do that 100%.

I have seen examples of human powered snow vehicles. I don't know how well they work. But I am sure a practical human powered snow mobile could be done. 50% of the people of Copenhagen ride bikes. They recently added a bike trail for commuters because the mayor (who is car free) decided that 50% wasn't good enough. The Netherlands is another great example of the practically of bikes. We just need the right infrastructure and mind set in the US.

bike is fine if you a) have tons of winter clothes, b) don't ride very far (not riding 10km in -30C, no thx!), c) have clean roads (that seems to be the biggest problem here - they never clean roads enough in winter, it's just compressed snow, which means you need special winter wheels for the bike to begin with..), d) have where to put your bike when you arrive to your destination (again - we seem to have more parking space for cars then places to put bikes). so it's really not an option..

Your body is still the biggest effect on the centre of mass, making it higher than the frame of the bike, therefore making the bike heavier LOWERS the centre of mass, as you're adding weight to below the original centre of mass.

Any sort of car regardless of what kind of fuel you use will be less energy efficient than a human powered vehicle. Also, cars take more resources to build than bicycles. As far as dates go, each person can have their own bike. I am sure there are plenty of people in the world that go out on a date via bicycle. Heck, you could skip the movie and have the bike ride be the date. You could bike to the park and have a pick-nick.

Alright you have a valid point. However, the luxuries that a car provides has set its roots too deep. All that we can do now is to make a more energy efficient car. Also, human powered vehicles are only as efficient as the process used to create the food we eat. For longer distances, it is actually more efficient to use some sort of electric assist.

Going to try riding in the winter this year, I live in Canada. Actually a woman I know rides all year long. More worried more about road salt than snow or cold, as you can dress for the weather (perhaps some heated gloves?). Of course, this isn't for everyone and I understand why most would opt for a car with all the nice climate control features.

The point of a bike is to get from point a to b. Bicycles are way to efficient to be real effective for weight loss. You have to go too far and too long. A resistance stationary bike is better for that.

Purplemutantas, recently car companies have been coming out with various new fuel efficient vehicles. Hybrid is the way now, while battery electric or hydrogen may be the future. The problem is the efficiency of most cars on the road today. A large amount of energy is wasted as heat. You can't ride a bicycle for every occasion, I mean what about taking that date out to the movies? I don't think tandem riding will catch on anytime soon in society (its also incredibly difficult to learn).

it is not about the savings, these are the fewer attempts that Oil, car and bike companies let them get away with. it's more about stop using gas. when other companies jump in, those prices will drop, but we still have a few issues, and one of them it is PEOPLE, they are used to think the old way, they for some reason think a car is better if you have a roaring sound, but they don't think about environment or the fact that OIL is hard to find, and i am in Venezuela, fuel is cheaper than water!
