Great video . Latin asmr remains my fav! It occurs to me that the corresponding english expression is quite unusual. "I gave the books as a gift.": Is "as" a preposition? Or is it an unusual elliptical clause?

Thanks for watching! It might be a bit of a stretch to call "as a gift" an elliptical clause in the English here, as that would imply a missing or understood stative verb (most often seen in expressions of comparison or contrast ). We might even be persuaded to call it a complement without a verb. However, as there is no need for a verb here, it serves the simple function of preposition, and is most eloquently described by the Latin usage of the dative of advantage: "to act as a" or "to be for a". This is why certain verbs govern this usage and have specific meanings in English.
