I have been learning Bharatnatyam since I was in 4th grade . It’s very interesting to see you guys analyse a dance form you are unfamiliar with. Bharatnatyam is an ancient classical dance form from the south of India. It puts emphasis on control, precise and graceful movements. It is a dance form that require a lot of core strength as well as leg strength and balance which you build over time. I have such fond memories of my teacher who used to make me sit next to her during breaks and straighten my back every time I slouched. One of the things I love about this form is how you depict and narrate stories through expressions and hand gestures. I was very good in the technical part however the expressions were something that I had to practice because I was very monotone. I remember just how much tired you would get after an hour or 3 of dancing . I developed callouses on the soles of my feet. It was a painful journey but I truly love dancing and I’m glad that I was able to learn this .

Indian folk dances goes back to Sindhu-Saraswati civilization which is 4000 years old and classical dance forms ranges between 7000 to 8000 years old. Natya Shastra meaning Principles of Dancing is regarded as the 5th Veda in Indian Civilization. Each of the 33 types of deities which we worship is specialized in one or the other forms of dancing or Singing. Our deities are master's of the Art🥰🙏
@Pihu5232 жыл бұрын
But our Shastriya music came from samveda which is 5000 years old. So classical dances are not that old.
@shushant18792 жыл бұрын
@@Pihu523 Samveda is based on smriti of our ancestors, means shlokas written in Veda are practiced before it evolved as smriti. That certifies that Art from described in Veda are much much older than the Veda itself. Art form in Samveda may be 10,000 years old

if u also notice, their hands are changing all the time. each hand gesture has a different meaning and it tells a story. i remember they had a live version of this, and before they dance, they explain the context of the dance and what it tries to depict, and if u follow their physical movements ALONG with their hand gestures, it tells the story very very accurately. and on TOP of the hand gestures and the physical movements, a lot of bharatanatyam dances also have very complex rhythms, as u heard in this one, where they changed from standard 4/4 to all sorts of other meters. putting it all together, the dancers have to remember so much

Classical dances in Indian language are called Shastriya dances because they are based on Natya Shastra by Bharat Muni. Following the Shastra - > Shastriya. The word Shastriya gets translated as classical but it looses the reference in doing so.

The dance name itself refers its orgin 'Bharatnatyam' Where Bharat= ancient name of 'India' and Natyam=dance Hence it means the dance of bharat And also you get it correct the classical indian dances are corely connected to deities What you seen is that three great dancer ladies where symbolising Shiva the supreme god for the name performs 'destruction' but actually very inocent and devotee loving deity in hinduism Shiva in his form 'Nataraja' is the 'king of dance' and creates,sustains and desctructs universe by his dance called tandava Also kathak is derived from the tandava

You need to know that Kathak dance of India and Flamingo dancing are identical as 1500 years back Indian(from Punjab,Rajasthan and Gujarat)were taken slvesby a Turkish Invader. But then he set them free and also did not allow them to move back to India. So they started living in Europe for centuries as Romas or gypsies.Discriminated by Europeans till date.

I think @Rozer King said it right..... Folk Dance is More like Group Dances to celebrate some Joyous event typically (Traditional dances typically associated to Tribes), Cultural Dances are more about Representing Spiritual Symbols and human emotional expressions.- (Associated to the Old Kingdom traditions and the faith they follow - Shiva/ Vishnu / Durga / etc) Kathak , Kathakali , Kuchipudi , Oddiya and Bharatnatyam are a few i heard of. There are more i believe. Others can feel free to correct me.
