I am no musician, but in my opinion since most/ or many singer from NE have either folk or western influences, it is not easy for them to enter the Indian music industry which has a classical flavour. On top of that there is language barrier (like enunciation) .

Nope, if you actually look at real Indian classical music performances, most of the female singers sing in low to medium pitch voices, and fewer in high pitched. This high pitched female song voice mostly became common in movie light semi classical or light music. In classical actually, men usually sing in higher pitched more.

Wonderful reaction you guys! I would highly recommend revisiting Mere Dholna song because I believe you guys saw the version from the remake (Arijit's version). There’s really not a gap in the alto range for Indian music, it’s just they aren’t given more songs. There’s actually plenty. Harshdeep kaur, nooran sisters, Vasundhara daas, bhoomi Trivedi, Neha bhasin, legendary Richa Sharma, Alisha Chinay, and Offcourse the OG Usha uthup! Also Sona mohapatra, Nandini Srikar, shalmali kholgade, and Aditi Singh Sharma and obviously the amazing Sunidhi Chauhan all have alto capacity. But that range of vocals don’t get enough limelight. And these were just famous ones, there’s plenty more. And that’s because of the style of Indian music, the vocal exercises are much more difficult to perform as a Suprano without shouting and so it automatically becomes a desirable trait and one which people applaud more. But I don’t want to take anything away from alto singers, Indian music is difficult in any range. You need to cho out all these artists as their songs are spread out compared the shreya or palak Muchaal or Alka yagnik, kavita krishna murthi, chitra or lata.
