Since you mention this like movie. in fact Many horror movie in indo use gamelan sound for the symbol of black magic or black power. Many story of people who lost in mountain hear a gamelan sound in the middle of forest. This gamelan is from java. Java is spiritual land. Culture in Indonesia includes Java, and the strongest tradition is Bali, which is still influenced by Hindu culture to this day. One of the traditions is that Muslims whose family members die, many of us still follow Hindu traditions, such as after someone dies, their family will commemorate the death for 3 days, then 7 day death, 40 day death, hundredth day death and a year death commemoration. But it includes Islamic elements in it and removes some Hindu elements that are not in accordance with Islamic sharia law

This is Gamelan Sari Raras, the Javanese gamelan ensemble based at UC Berkeley! I used to play with these folks back in the day - and this ensemble has been directed by Pak Midiyanto, a talented musician and wayang shadow puppeteer. I also see mbak Laura McColm, who is the female soloist singer (called a pesindhen or waranggana). Hi Pak Widi and mbak Laura! And the dance is Gambyong, which is usually performed for village celebrations.

We are here care of our culture since our childhood where we learn traditional songs and dances from kindergarten and we a day in a week we wear traditional costume to school (from elementry school - senior high school). If you are so interested of this Gamelan and have a plan visiting Indonesia, please come to Yogyakarta Palace in Yogyakarta Special Region (in Central Java/Java Island) every weekend, or you check online the schedule, there every weekend morning there is dance and gamelan performance. Even I am an Indonesia, I am amazed by it. 😊 And also in Yogyakarta, there is also a traditional performance at Prambanan Temple. Or, you can visit Bali and enjoy the performance of Balinese Gamelan. Because of Bali is tourism island, it is more often, prepared and have certain schedule of this performance.

I’m glad you two were able to appreciate it, because usually people who are used to Western music would find the tuning system used by gamelan ensemble to be weird and jarring. Only those with deeper understanding of world music can fully understand and appreciate that we have such a diversity of music styles around the planet. BTW the one at 4:35 is a Malaysian movie about a Javanese princess from Majapahit (based in modern-day province of East Java in Indonesia) and her love story with a Malaysian warrior. The first part is quite authentic though, they used traditional Surakarta (Central Java) music and dance, but then after she showered the love interest with flower petals, the gamelan is intertwined with modern Malay-style music.

The oldest fusion that i know from gamelan is langgam, which is fusion of Javanese classical and keroncong. One of the popular langgam singer is Waldjinah, she popularize one of the Javanese classical song (tembang) into a new style and perspective That song is Lingsir Wengi and it's getting more popular since become a soundtrack of a horror movie with new lyrics and interpretation Btw i like Lingsir Wengi performance by Mercu Buana Choir in this festival kzbin.info/www/bejne/mZK6mqyCrq6YpMUsi=Vca-vhzHNEiASZEK

There are 1340 tribes in Indonesia with different arts and cultures. This includes regional musical arts which, even though they belong to one tribe, have differences in style and so on. The gamelan you are watching is Javanese cultural art with characters from Central Java. The team of gamelan musicians is called Karawitan, the music players are called Waranggana and Niyaga, the female singers in Karawitan are called sinden, the background of the singing vocals is called senggakan. Musical instruments in Karawitan have their own names and functions. There are many types of song characters in Karawitan which are used in different events and moments. Singing Javanese songs without music is called Ura ura. The characters of Javanese songs include Langgam, sekar, and others. Javanese Gamelan has a slower tempo, Balinese Gamelan has a faster tempo, and Sundanese Gamelan has more Kendang (drum) sounds. Maybe readers from Indonesia (and who understand it better) who read this comment can add. There are many different regional musical arts in Indonesia, maybe next you will react to other musical arts from ethnic groups in Indonesia, such as traditional bamboo music played by elementary school children in Komawe, South Sulawesi. You guys will like it.

Nowadays, the Javanese Gamelan has been used a lot in a bunch of Indonesian horror movie as a background music of ghosts arrival. Even in real life, folks believe, when you hear this music in an empty place such as forest or mountain, you are half way through entering the ghost world. 👻
