There's also a grammar reason to refrain from latinx. Let's take the heritage month and studies example. In Spanish the heritage month would be "mes de la cultura latina" and studies would be "estudios latinos". In Spanish mes (month) is male, but cultura (culture) is female and it's the last noun used and what the term latina is describing and thus we use latina. In the case of estudios (studies) we use latinos because studies is a male noun in Spanish. It has nothing to do with the gender identity of the students. Men can be referred to as latinas depending on the term used to group them. Populations and persons are female terms (población / personas), they'd be described as latina/latinas even if there are men in the group. It's wrong to say "la población latino". It's always "la población latina" even when it's all men. Same applies for a community which is a female term in Spanish even if all its members are men. So it's comunidad latina. Unless we use the word "de" (of) which implies members or individuals which are male terms so it would be "comunidad de latinos". Which is short for "comunidad de 'miembros' latinos". If I said personas (persons) explicitly then I'd use latinas. As in "comunidad de personas latinas". It makes no sense to use a gender neutral term such as latinx because "personas" is female. Even if I'm referring to a group of all men. It'd be horrible grammar.

Why use _x_ if the letter _o_ already has the duality of being used as masculine and neutro? To a singular object O is masculine, but to a group of objects O is neutro. It’s simple. For example, imagine I have a chess board that can also be used as a checkers board, why, if it’s not necessary, should I get a separate board of chess and a separate board of checkers?
@user-yt4lp1mh8y3 жыл бұрын
Hi! I'm a month late but I might be able to explain why people would want to use a separate word for neutral. Some people are what's called "non-binary", which means that they don't identify as male or female. If this is your first time hearing about this, that's okay and it's okay to be a little confused by this. I won't go into too much detail into why they feel that way, but there are people who do, and I'm close friends with someone who identified as non-binary. For those people, using masculine or feminine terms to describe them can be uncomfortable or distressing, which is why they would want a neutral form for gendered words. However, almost all spanish speaking non-binary people I've met prefer "Latine" and don't use "Latinx", since its pronunciation makes more sense. I hope this could help clarify why someone would want a neutral equivalent to latino/latina and if you have questions I'll try my best to answer them. Have a nice day!

I was caught off guard when the video changed subjects and started getting all political about the subject of gender. I know “latinx” is kinda dumb since “latino” is already kinda gender neutral, but I didn’t expect a rant about how non-binary people apparently don’t exist since the scientific community totally agrees that sex and gender are the same exact thing. 🙄 I’m sure plenty of people here already agree with that part of the video and thought nothing of it, and that’s fine I guess, but I went and checked out the channel’s description and clicked the link to find out what they were all about. I also consulted our good and totally not unreliable friend Wikipedia for more information. Turns out the James G. Martin Center for Academic Renewal is actually a nonprofit conservative policy institute named after a republican former governor of North Carolina. That basically means that everything they put out seems educational, but is actually politically motivated. The “Politicization” section of their website has articles talking about how colleges should stop trying to combat racism, China is influencing American universities, faith in science is a dumb concept since Joe Biden was the one who pushed for it, and the left’s push for more inclusive language is literally a form of tyranny. I wish the last one was an exaggeration. I’m not trying to cancel this channel. Politically motivated institutions aren’t inherently bad, and I think they’re actually pretty important. I’m just pointing out the fact that the James G. Martin Center is far more biased than it seems to be, and everything it puts out should be taken with a grain of salt. That being said, even though I barely speak Spanish and I’m totally one of those liberals who this institute seems to despise so much, I still think “latinx” is pretty estupido.

First of all, spanish is not a neurtral language as english, so we need the use of pronouns in a sentence for it to be gramatically correct. Second, when refering to a group, spanish use masculine nouns such as "niños" which refers to a group of children, and it doesn't matter if there are girls in that grupo cause that word already refers to the entire group, and it is gramatically correct. Latinx ends up as a useles term for latinos because gramatically it doesn't fit in our language and it was unnecesary but still was brought up by people from the US So think a little before using it

I just heard that term today. I was really confused what it was about. Two problems. I saw the word but I didn´t head of it at first. I tried to pronounce it in like "La-tings", "la-tinks" an it really sounds more near lit "la-stinks" like if you try to tell someone "you latino, you stinks" lol. and other thing. "Latin-ex" sounds as a gringo[sorry for the term but the one who invented that word deserves that] trying to say ex-latin but he doesn´t know a lot of spanish and forgot that the word ex is a prefix and so it just told it as latin-ex as an insult to tell someone who is a latino/latina but that it somehow isn´t anymore (in like abandoning all the culture way or something; you know, everything can be converted as an insult).

@Barcads3 жыл бұрын
Hi. I'm Latino and Hispanic, and I was kinda okay with the video up until 5:12. I think the video should have kept its integrity and stayed unbiased. Yeah, Spanish is a gentrified language; almost nobody likes the term; in Spanish, it is pronounced even worse (Latin-eh-kis); people are trying to change the way we say an idiom ("x") with an already centuries-old pre-established pronunciation, and so on. But from then on the rest of the video stops being about language and descriptivism vs prescriptivism, and starts being about views on the validity of sociologic, scientific, and academic definitions of the term 'gender', which has been differentiated from chromosomic sex, on a bunch of scientific fields since the 1970s. The whole point of the LGBTQ+ community is not to argue that there exist a plethora of chromosomic sex classifications (which btw include not only male and female but also 'intersex', an actually medically accurate classification: look for it), but to recognize the existence of some genders ( *social roles* ) besides those universally associated with male and female, and fight against their discrimination. While I believe that rules should not be imposed on speakers, specially rules nobody likes, I do understand that 'Latinx' exemplifies an effort to be more inclusive, in favor of discriminated minorities. That, in and of itself, is noble. It just happens to be a very dumb effort.
@suckmyduck70293 жыл бұрын
What I don't get is, Latinx isn't actually supposed to be a Latin word, it is an American English word used to describe a group of Latino people, people use "Latin(x)" because Spanish is such a heavily gendered language, and Latino/Latina are both still a very confusing fusion of both American and Mexican culture(obviously this depends on where you are, different places have different definitions of the word, I'm speaking mostly for Mexico, America and Hispanic people currently living in the US). Latin-x is just supposed to be an American term that helps you identify them the same way you would any other Hispanic person using a word that fits for them. To be honest, I've always kind of thought that in American English, Latino was already gender-neutral, but I suppose if you are a Hispanic person, then having a way to identify with your people in your home country would be very nice.

Latinx is essentially a colonizing term. The fact that people are essentially trying to force Latin America to try and accept this term is an issue in my opinion. As a Mexican American, I don't believe it's a genuine good idea to force Latin Americans to change their language to fit the standards of the United States. While I understand that non-binary people do not feel comfortable with being referred to as latino/latina, we still have Hispanic. It's not right to force our people from Latin America and immigrants here because we want to feel politically correct or want to be right. I do not agree with the real purpose behind this video, which is to attack people who want to talk about gender identity though

Idk if you are in favour or against the "E" neutral, but sadly, E and O are male, A is female. "El profesor" is male "Los profesores" is male plural and neutral plural "La profesora" female Gender in spanish is Really, really complex, because everyword has a gender, be it female or male, be it "El" or "la" if you say "Le persona" is wrong, because "persona" 's gender is female, "La persona" it does not matter if you are talking about a guy or a gal "la persona" "el humano" "El planeta" "la canción" Everything has a gender here. and changing everything to "E" doesn't solve this, because... Thanks.
