back in the day there was no harness. You wore your belt and flat out just didn't fall. It takes a few hours to get up the tower nowadays. It's a good thing though in case of induction.

How do you like being a phone man? Do you make pretty good money doing that?

@hurt1704 I've been doing it for 6 years now, I enjoy the work but dislike the company. I'm 27.4/hr, top out pay is around 35. It's not great money, but it's good enough. A lot has changed. It's not just landlines and dsl anymore. All these fiber installs can get exhausting, especially in the heat climbing poles all day. Hanging 4+ span fiber drops on a ladder or hooks gets rough towards the end of the week.

@@jeffreyhansen1737 good to know. Out of curiosity, I keep seeing these telecommunications line schools popping up and are taught at these lineman schools. Do you know anyone physically that has went to one and gotten hired? Also how hard is the work working on th telephone lines?

@hurt1704 I work for Windstream(Kinetic). You don't need experience with my company. They teach you how to throw a ladder on a pole and strand, along with hooks. We have former lineman who have been hired to our teardown and construction crews. The job can be confusing at first. There's a color code for 25 pairs. A lot of the new guys get confused, for an example... you are assigned pair 1478. The new guys can't seem to get it. It just takes time. The hardest part of the job is hanging drops. The most frustrating part is being on hold for hours with network techs. Cable troubles can take hours to repair depending on the distances. We have some circuits that are 6-10 miles long. But you can always just call the bucket truck if you are having trouble, bc technically, that's not your job, it's theirs. But the only way to learn to be a cable man is to try and fix your own cable troubles.
