I know that's right! I grew up watching these episodes and 45 years later I'm still watching them! Some one commented that they felt rather sad for Eunice. I didn't feel sad for Eunice until after her Mom died she thought Ed wanted to get back with her and because of her low self esteem and genuine help for others; she did not even get to go with her brother Phillip to New York and she really wanted to go to see new places and enjoy life's true blessings.

There is something about these comedy sketches with Eunice and Mamma that touches on a sadness at the same time . How many of us are there that have known the deep despair and anger from trying to please someone that never will be pleased no matter how hard you may try .
@rhsharp2 жыл бұрын
Regarding this particular sketch: This was very sad and disturbing. Brilliantly written, acted,and directed…and I don’t like watching it. It’s really psychodrama for the writers. The talented Betty White’s character is downright hateful, as is Mama. I much preferred the earlier sketches of “The Family,” such as the three of them playing Sorry, or when Alan Alda, Tommy Smothers, and Roddy McDowell played Eunice’s brothers. Those sketches were funny. But then “The Family” took a dark turn that I detested. Thank goodness they lightened it up again when it morphed into Mama’s Family.

I know this is fiction but it’s rather sad. The smartest one of the entire family is their brother Philip. He left home early to move to California to become a writer and never came back home and limited his contact with immediate family. This is the best way to deal with narcissists. You can empathize why Eunice turned out the way she did. Her mother was a narcissist and used gaslighting against her, and her sister Ellen was a narcissist as well and used gaslighting. Truly, if I were her, I would have divorced that stupid, lazy, penny pinching husband, put that selfish, ungrateful, narcissistic harpy of a mother in a nursing home and forget her, and tell that self centered sister to kiss my narrow ass before leaving town to start my life over and forget everyone of them. No love loss.

It does seem like Mama likes Ellen more than Eunice. She doesn't put down Ellen about small matters.
@BrunetteOnTheCouch Жыл бұрын
Mama likes all the other kids better because they're 'successful' (i.e. got some money, moved elsewhere) in her eyes. Mama sees in Eunice everything she doesn't like about herself and how her life turned out so Eunice gets the brunt of it. They both didn't get the life they really wanted and settled for men that impregnated them. They're 'stuck' in that town and miserable.

@@carolyncollinge1514 It's fitting that at the end, Ellen is always reduced to shouting, threats, losing her temper. She's a smug, pretentious braggart who thinks you can buy virtue with a spouse's money, but in the end she's always dragged back down to the level of the family she thinks she's risen above. And it serves her right.
