Hi guys, and welcome back to my channel! If you’re new here, my name’s Rachel and I’m a huge Eurovision fan as well as a musician.
In today’s video, I reacted to Latvia’s entry for Eurovision 2023, ‘Aijā’ by Sudden Lights.
This one really took me by surprise, mainly due to the usage of multiple time signatures! 5/4 and 3/4? What more could I ask 4 😝.
But seriously though, this was great! A fabulous hook in the chorus underpinned by some really great acoustic and electric guitar melodies that complimented the singers voice so well. Not to mention, the really nice blend of languages. Well done Latvia, smashed it!
Initial Score: 9/10

I really hope we will go to final...but semi final 1 is strong🥲 Buuuut our musicians are already preparing for that. They are doing a tour to introduce Europe with their song. They already participated as guests in Moldovan national selection final. So I hope they gather enough fanbase to get votes for qualifying. :)

I dont have a musical background or any musical knowledge at all so I don’t know time signatures however I think everyone will be able to see how interesting and unique the production itself is in that first verse. It’s quite the way to start a song. I think the chorus is gorgeous and the outro in Latvian is beautiful too. I really hope it qualifies but I’m quite nervous for it’s chances tbh.

Based on the group itself, they said the song is made to console the world in these dark times where media is showing only bad and society in general is suffering. To me this is a work of art. Based on the meaning they have provided, I don't even see it as experimental but a very intentional in each detail. From the mood throughout the songs to instrumental, to lyrical change in mother tongue to emphasis on certain words and even to the point they don't follow any classical music rule... Very underrated song. Maybe it isn't the best bet for Eurovision since it's more about instant gratification and this song is more the one who gets better after each time you listen to it, but definitely a very impactful song.

I knew you would love that song and understands the art in that. I myself don't have the real musical background (like I forgot everything) but the way it sounded off/not right made it by the first listen really special to me. The lyrics being simple with a message I could immediately sing along. The last part and the transition to that with the Latvian and the meaning of Aija being the sound of the lullaby just like Spaines EAEA. (Love to have both this year) I love that. I could have wanted more of that Latvian but just that makes it special enough. I wish and hope that it'll get the appreciation it deserves in the semi. At lot of loves

I am a rapper and a poet myself so I listened to this song while looking more at the lyrics and the delivery, and damn, that was really something. The lyrics is truly poetic and really emotional, as it is most likely about a person who tries to hide harsh truth of the world that we live in to his loved one, by trying to keep that person asleep, in a poetic sense. I am also that type of person who invests a lot in others and worries a lot about their wellbeing so this song pretty much strucked me. The entire delivery of "Please, just don't wake up" and that soft ending gave me a really melancholic feeling that I cannot describe.

Seems that Latvia's bringing the more interesting morsels of music theory to ESC yet again. Like you said, I personally think it's the strongest Latvian entry in quite a long time (probably since Aminata - oof), and tbh, I could very well see these guys troubling the top 10, even against some of the "bigger" powerhouses in semi 1. Oh hey! The time signature was something I noticed immediately as well! In my own review I had it going from 5/4 to 6/4, and noted that it's a brilliant way to put the idea of the lullaby into practice; to resolve the uneasy, unfamiliar 5/4 by moving to a more calming, much more familiar 6/4, just like how lullabies are supposed to help soothe and calm! I don't remember many Eurovision acts (if at all) who have played with time signature changes, so that alone adds points for me. I currently have it at 7th :D But I suspect that most people will write it off as a song that sounds weird, rather than view it as a technical strength that adds to the theme of the piece :(

I love chachacha for the ESC (and us Finn’s would’ve loved it even without the competition) but no one outside of Finland would have never found Käärijä without the competition. This is my number one, now that I have listened to everything. And it’s so sad that it’s barely on a bubble to qualify. As for your question about the rhythm perception by a someone who wasn’t musically trained. I interpreted it as “torn up rhythm” “smth not normal” I tend to gravitate to “weird rhythms”, especially when they are juxtaposed by something tender and melodic. I also LOVE 3/4 signature. It makes me weak in the knees. This here is too hard for my untrained ear to peg, but when you mentioned that it toys between 5/4 and 3/4 it kinda made sense why my body reacted to this the way it did. My ear knows more than my brain, it seems 😂

Yes! I'd listen to a full album of this. Reminds me of Young The Giants (of "Cough Syrup" fame). Might be disorienting if you hear it in a line up but will definitely make an impression. The lead vocals also sound clean. This type of beat with smooth melodic vocals always make me think of private thoughts in public or a noisy party. There's a sense of nervousness, stifled energy and then catharsis in the bride. Perpetually my vibe. 9/10

For me it's a hidden gem of this year - very romantic lullaby with nostalgic sound (Latvia has been famous as a home for indie rock in post-Soviet region). But considering 100% televote, I'm not sure how it will do in the contest. It's in the 1st, 'bloodbath', very competitive, semifinal, along with several fans and bookies favorites and I'm afraid, Latvia risks to NQ again - not all audience likes this type of dreamy, experimental music. To me this song is not Eurovision worthy. Not because it's bad, but because it's so musically complex and advanced that the usual mainstream music that Eurovision goes for wouldn't see the beauty in it. This song is pure art with attention to every little detail that it basically makes the listener feel exactly what they are conveying even if they don't know the language. Eurovision is more about catchy songs while this is the one that gets better after each listen. So while I love the song, I don't see it getting through to the finals. But I hope I'm wrong.

It's kind of funny, because from the first listen I knew this was my kind of music (what I listen to normally, or maybe more accurately, listened to about 10 years ago), but something just didn't click. Maybe I was also a little distracted by the music video, because the song kind of opened up to me when I saw the live performance. Although I do like the video too.

Funny how we are having two songs with the "same" title this year: Aijā and EAEA. Both gorgeous, by the way.

@@Rafaelinux in Spanish, "ea ea" are the words mothers repeat to calm their babies down while rocking them in their arms. I've read somewhere that "aijā" is the same in Latvian. Funny, huh?

Thanks for your reaction, Rachel! This is one of my favourite songs this year. I read somewhere that ‘Aija’ is the name of the singer’s daughter and the song is like a lullaby to her.

a bit of a late reply from me, a Latvian 😁 Aija is actually a girls name in Latvia, however aijā/aijāt means swaying somebody (usually a baby or child) to sleep. To me it brings back the warm and cosy feelings of childhood when you're in your parents lap with zero worries, and I still use it with my daughter as many, many parents do ❤ the word "aijā" is used in most of Latvian lullabies. so while it is slighly different you're still close 😊

"I twatted my hand against the desk". LOL. Rachel, I understood that verb, even though its not really used in Irish English. It seemed an unusual turn of phrase for you. You're generally more measured in speech, mindful of a more global audience. So I enjoyed you letting your hair down. 😂👍 Also enjoyed the song appraisal.... yes, I'd like to see it progress to the Final.

I'm from Latvia and even if I wasn't, this would be my favourite after Finland, I think it's too mellow to win though, and realistically won't achieve top 10, knowing Eurovision, not even top 20, but it should, I love indie rock

I also like this song. It is a great and easy listen. I think they just needed to up his mic for his vocals throughout the performance. The music video also has really arresting visuals. You and I also really liked LPS last year. Their mastery of their instruments reminds me of LPS too. I worry this may not qualify. It seems to have its strong fans but I worry it may be too experimental or indie for the voting public. I hope they qualify.

It isnt one of my favourites but i need this in the final. So far Ireland Malta are out for me, so Latvia needs flop from Switzerland, Azerbaijan and then one more country, unfortunately if this makes it, It will be borderline but i really hope they will make it.

I don't have any idea if any popular Eurovision song has a 5/4 signature but Greece 1983 is one example I guess Can't wait for you to react to Serbia. That one is an experimental song and a half, my current winner too.

My favourite Japanese mathrock band (who I had the privilege of seeing live last September) went mad with 5/4 and 6/4 in their early material, so this song caught my attention too. It’s an underrated song, I feel. I don’t think it’s getting as much hype as other countries I could mention. I think this will qualify, but … *checks* … yeah, they’re in semi-final one, with a lot of good songs. Might be touch and go. But just as I think Vesna will easily avenge We Are Domi, this could well get some justice for Citi Zeni 😀

@@ThePeaceAround They're called Tricot. Check their early EPs - "Bakuretsu Tricot San" and "School Children and the Cosmo". They're both on Spotify if you use it. Hopefully, they'll be back in the UK soon, in a town near YOU. Check out instrumental Japanese mathrock band Paranoid Void too. I also saw them last year when they came over. In fact, there are just too many awesome Japanese mathrock bands these days. My favourite genre right now.

I’d love to see this in the final! Also - I’m not sure if 5/4 has been used at all in recent years, although the chorus sounds a bit more like 6/8 than 3/4 to me:)
@th5841
@th5841 Жыл бұрын
I would say 3/4. The bars come in pairs. 6/8 is more triplets. It feels like 2/4 but with triplets instead of 8s. Queen Of Kings is 12/8, but it feels like 4/4 with triplets.

I can put this song below the 13th place, it has something unique despite the lack in a strong hook but the sound itself. I don't have music education but my taste likes it!

I tend to latch on to rythm in music. For some reason I don't pick up the 5/4 in this at all (I've listened to Aija a *lot*) but I felt drawn to it immediately. That might actually be a thing for me now that I think about it, the song that got me into Nightwish - Ghost Love Score - also has complicated meters (also did not pick up on them, saw a reaction video XD). Oh and I have taken like 4 music theory lessons and I was under 15 years old, so I'd conside myself non-trained.
