Doing this in early 2024 with Windows Server 2022, I didn't need any additional drivers for the OS to see the storage device. This must have been fixed in later versions of Proxmox

Great video. Just one thing, the virtio CD comes with an installer you can use after windows is up and running that will install all of the drivers that apply as well as the qemu agent.

These are great additions to the Promox Series. A lot of settings that we'd normally gloss over. Can I suggest doing one for OPNSense ? They have a few recommended settings like adding an IO thread, and 8 queues for the NIC

Great video tutorial, hate to be one of "those people", but I just wanted to point out that your NIC selection (e1000) is not the best choice for performance. You want to use the virtio option. I realise this is for demo purposes, but perhaps an explanation at this stage, pointing out why Proxmox recommends virtio for networking - spoiler (performance!) may be useful. Users will follow along with your tutorial and then wonder why Windows performance is crap and then blame Proxmox and shift off to XCP-NG. This is a much needed video series, thank you for your work Jay.

+1 to this comment, using the virtio NIC option only adds 1 extra step of having to install the driver from the win virtio iso, and gives way better performance

Great video Jay and I love your Proxmox VE course!!! It would be great if you would do another video on how to setup a VM in Proxmox for pfSense and then have Tom Lawrence do a video on how to configure it etc. This way we would have full tutorial how to get an excellent all in one home LAB setup. It would also leave room for future videos e.g. how to add Unify APs and setup the Unifi Controller in a Proxmox container...

10:40 "...and I"ll send it the virtual version of the three-finger salute". I often want to give Windows the physical version of the one-finger salute. Good video, though. Work a lot with VMware but one day will play with Proxmox. Too bad so much manual work with drivers; VMware tools installer takes care of that.

very good. Just a kick note for some of us that are facing ethernet issue when installing W10. When creating the VM, choose "Q35" as machine type. I've cosen the virtio Network type. Then continue the installation, even if no internet connexion is found. Once complete, go the device manager and update the drivers of the ethernet device, using the virtio drivers as shown in video. That's all work ! Question @LearnLinuxTv : why chosing SCSI drivers for the VM ? Why not SATA ?

You should also use the kvm native network driver during the vm creation instead of e1000 and use the proper driver from virtio-win iso disk. The native kvm driver is way faster than e1000 emulation

Hi Jay, excellent set of videos and I keep revisiting these when I get stuck. None of the other series cover it this well, yet be useful for newcomers. Quick question regarding setting up the Windows 2022 - the System panel now offer a bunch of options that I must be picking wrong and it gets stuck when starting the VM. These include Firmware questions such as BIOS (default: OVMF (UEFI)), Add EFI Disk & storage, Add TPM, or Pre-enroll keys option. Would it be possible to see a screenshot of your typical selections? Once again, kudos for building this valuable series!
@ktraglin
@ktraglin 2 жыл бұрын
I wanted to be able to use features like "remote desktop" control/use/viewing of the VM, easily resizing the "remote desktop" window, seamless integration of the keyboard & mouse, "pass-though" of local (client machine) usb devices & folders to the VM, and ultimately, "PCI passthrough" of my accelerated 3D graphics card from the Proxmox host/node machine to the VM (for accelerated 3D graphics rendering in the VM). All of this is do-able using the "spice protocol" (support is built in to QEMU - used by Proxmox). Because of my desire to use these features, I chose/selected/set the VM's "Graphic card" to "SPICE", the "Machine" to q35, the "BIOS" to OVMF (UEFI). "Add EFI Disk" was already selected by default, so I just had to choose/set the storage location for the EFI disk (I set mine to the same as the storage location for the VM, itself - in my case - "local-lvm"). "Pre-Enroll keys" was also already selected by default. The "Add TPM" option is not required for Windows 10 or earlier, but IS required for Windows 11. Also for performace reasons, on the "Disks" tab, I checked/selected the "Advanced" box at the bottom - near the "Back" and "Next" buttons in order to also select "SSD emulation". This is because on lots of computers, the "Discard" option won't function properly without "SSD emulation" being selected. Finally, to get better network performance, under the "Network" tab I set the "Model" to "VirtIO (paravirtualized)". I hope this is helpful to you.

Thanks for the helpful video Jay. You clearly stated that Windows licensing is not your area of expertise, but I have just one burning question which pertains to microsoft licensing. Do you know if it is possible to migrate an existing bare metal Windows licence to a virtual machine on the same device after wiping the SSD and installing Proxmox or another hypervisor?

6.15 That could be a video by itself. Because kvm64 might be the most compatible cpu type, it is not the fastest. Host type > cpu family type (ex..Ivy Bridge) >Qemu64 > kvm 64 Problem is what happens if you choose a cpu type that is different on another node (so I am speaking for host or cpu family here) and you authenticate win serv with that cpu type. Later on you migrate because of a maintenance to another node and what happens then? OS understands the different hardware and breaks authentication? Also what happens if you choose Qemu64 and a new version comes out of that virtual cpu comes out. Does it breaks win authentication also? Maybe all of the above falls under the reply .... not the scope of this video / channel but I cant find help with that matter anywhere (not in the proxmox forum) PS How come an you installed balloon driver . It still has the known bug (at least to my knowledge)

Hey Jay! I have an other small question for you. Say I'm running a ressource consumming app - simulation app - that needs a lot of CPU but I just started with 1 pve node(1 server). Then, I get some money and buy new hardware and I want my running app to also use this new server CPU and scales CPU usage with as many more servers as I add. How can I achieve this using Proxmox and if my app runs in a windows OS? Some people may refer to it as building a farm/parallel computing but not sure if it is. And it seems that big companies like google did it running thousands of servers to power-up their search engine (1 website).

Turn off your W10 VM. In VM hardware, add the Audio Device (something like ich9-intel-hda) with backend driver set for SPICE. Then edit the Display and set the graphic card to SPICE. Power on the W10 VM, and install a SPICE client for your workstation. By now W10 is booted up, in Proxmox click the Console dropdown and pick SPICE. That should open up your SPICE client, and it should have sound. Tah dah * this is probably doable over RDP, but I generally find spice easier to deal with, it does multiple monitors very well, and is what I use for I'm using a Linux VM as a desktop
