Launching Flowers Into Outer Space

Great Big Story

When it comes to flower arrangements, Japanese artist Makoto Azuma is quite literally pushing the boundaries out of this world. It all started 20 years ago, when the one-time rock musician took a part-time job at a flower shop. There he began to appreciate the power and beauty of plants. The experience made him think: “if flowers symbolize Earthly beauty, how can I push nature’s boundaries? How can I transport beauty to where it doesn’t currently exist?” His answer: bring flowers to outer space. Now, as part of an ongoing experimental artistic series, Azuma and a crew of florists, balloon experts and cameramen are launching carefully selected flower arrangements into the atmosphere.

A lot of people complaining, yet not a lot of logic. Consider for a moment the absolute insane amount of outrageously unnecessary 'aesthetic' garbage that costs 50x this much, that everyone's okay with. Private yachts, mansions, diamond jewellery, pretty much the whole of Dubai.... One guy wants to create some truly unique artwork and suddenly it's 'too much'.

This comments section is absurd! This guy goes out of his way to make unique, beautiful art (that, mind you, doesn't create /any/ space debris because the balloons pop eventually and the whole thing falls back to the ground), and it's a waste of money, but then the high art world spends millions on contemporary masterpieces and "oh well that's fine". Art is art and sometimes it's expensive to make and buy. Deal with it.

It took a few people to carry that frame. Imagine that falling to earth, would smash through someone's house. Hence why they are in the middle of nowhere. You wouldnt shoot targets with a firearm in the direction of neighbors homes. You go to a safe area

The flowers sould be released from there, so that they would have fallen onto the unsuspecting pedestrians. That would have made their day and some use of those flowers (assuming the terminal velocity would be low enough not to kill them). They would be like : "aliens sent me this?? Specially for me??" *tears up*

The ISS is moving at around 5 miles a second at an altitude of 200-270 miles. so it's way higher up than this balloon has any chance of reaching, and even if it could they'd zip past it at over 17,000 miles per hour. But it is a beautiful piece of non-permanent art.

To everyone saying that this is wasteful and just creating more trash: While it is not explicitly stated in the video, the common practice when launching these high-altitude balloons is to also attach a GPS and a parachute, which will then allow you to collect the payloads later without damage. Thus, the impact on the environment should be minimal and limited to burst balloon fragments or flowers flying off the bouquet. How else do you think they would collect the footage of the space flowers?? Plus, they clearly attached a DSLR camera there so I'm sure they wouldn't just throw those away...

@williamstewart7399

@The Future, there is a camera rig attached to the system holding the bouquet. When the balloon pops and falls back to earth they would use a gps tracker to locate it and retrieve the footage.

Thats why earth is beautful because it has blessings even if you could get a living in space you'd still not have them again. Yeah flowers are part of that, when you ruin your earth and all these news about the earth going to explode or fall apart so scientists are looking for a way to live in space but its getting worse the population and people's actions/behaviors towards the blessing on this planet aren't improving a bit which is causing more harm to it. PS. im sorry about my spelling i dont speak english fluently💗

@Maxwaehrens
@Maxwaehrens 6 жыл бұрын
+Maximus Truce at this heigh it will always fall to the ground, and they send this up above a large desert, so that's most likely where it will crash. +nkotb 82 to put this into perspective for you, the flowers and the rest of the construction never got into a true weightless orbit. It was only sent to 30,000 meters of height, the ISS orbits at around some 321,000 meters of height and when Felix Baumgartner made his free fall from space, it was at 39,000 meters of height where the gravity is only 1% less than at the surface of earth.
