Men that are like Waymond cannot be more commonly seen in Asia, i bursted into tears in cinema because he reminded me so much of my old man. On the outside they appear beta like, but deep down they purposely choose to avoid falling into the loud, overpowering alpha archetype as a survival mechanism in society. The more mature an Asia man get the more they become like Waymond as there are more responsibilities on their shoulders, there is just way too much to lose.

'In The Mood For Love' is a visually sumptuous, romantic-looking film, but the characters aren't happy, right? It has entered the movie-watching public's mind as a shorthand for romance, desire and tension. The two leads look great and everything. But the characters are frustrated and unhappy. And, yes, joy is absent. So, the reference is right on the mark.

This is THE SCENE of this movie. I feel this sequence is what won him the Oscar and what won over so many people. Because it has so much heart and its so relatable. My husband and I had a major fight about finances right before we went to see this movie. I started SOBBING during this sequence. I felt my husband reach over and grip my hand and he was crying too. They were saying what we needed in that moment. I still look at him on bad days and say "laundry and taxes?" And he agrees. This is the iconic moment of this movie because it is life, for so many married couples just scraping by.

I love the reversal of the common trope of "woman saves man through the power of love" here. Waymond is unapologetically what the assholes would call a "beta male." His hyper-competent, ass-kicking Alpha Universe counterpart doesn't survive the movie because he's fighting the wrong way. The only way to fight against nihilism is with love. When Evelyn understands that - thanks to Waymond - she's able to save her daughter and the universe. Laundry and taxes and ordinary life are the true test of love. In the end, that's what saves them all.

Good point and insight. I think Evelyn represent us or the world view. Normally, Alpha Waymond is the one that impresses the world - capable and assertive; this is the Waymond Evelyn is impressed with at the beginning of the movie. While husband Waymond is not outwardly impressive and actually looks weak in world view - baking cookies for the enemy seems like a submissive move. But the growth of Evelyn and hopefully for us as well is that he is able to do this because of his inner core strength and valves. Winning respect through quiet love and compassion.

Nah, it really doesn't change the meaning at all. And TBH, it's really clunky with a transliteration like that. The translation is more succinct and way better at conveying what it needs to convey. Also, you got the transliteration wrong. He doesn't say "I would STILL CHOOSE", 想 = want, not choose He says: "如果有來生,我還是想和你一起,報稅、開洗衣店 " which transliterates to: 如果有來生 = if there is a next life 我還是想和你一起 = i would still want to (with you) 報稅 = do taxes 開洗衣店 = open a laundromat It works well for Chinese, but definitely super clunky in english.

To chip in too, I think the translation you gave works well for those who grew up chinese and retained their chinese roots. Reincarnation is a uniquely chinese thing, hinduism has reincarnation too but i am not so sure if they use it in almost every single classics. Chinese classics such as 聊齋, 封神, 西游 uses the plot of reincarnation and next life heavily. The modern take on palace genre, coming from both hong kong and china (even korea) plays heavily into the use of reincarnation and next life. For chinese audience, it is easy to understand that not being with evelyn is waymond's biggest regret that he feels hopeless and see no chance of fulfilling it in his current life. The english subtitles convey that same meaning too for english audience who are more used to multiverse. The genre of multidimension is even older than einstein's theory of relativity or shroedinger's cat. I really do think in this case the producers did a great job to help audience from both chinese and english background understand waymond's regret.

I think my favorite part about Waymond's character is that they didn't feel the need to give him an arc in order to have him become heroic via stereotypical masculinity. A lot of softer and more emotional male characters usually have some kind of arc where they become action heroes and that's how they show their worth to those around them. Waymond stays exactly the same the whole movie, and the whole time he was exactly who everyone around him needed him to be; a kind, patient, generous, loving goofball who solved problems with empathy and diplomacy instead of violence.

It's wild. I've always been taught--since childhood by my parents, teachers, etc.--to be kind to others. But not until this movie, has the raw concept of the value of kindness really hit home for me. As soon as the movie was finished, I felt compelled/inspired to tell my parents I loved them and to also to do something nice for them. After this movie, I go out and interact with strangers differently--with more patience and understanding. This movie gives such a strong case for WHY being kind is so important in society and interpersonal relationships. None of us know what's going on, we're all anxious at the thought of ultimately being alone, and we all have our own hangups and ways of coping with the realities of life. Be kind to each other because it's all we know how to keep on going.

Waymond is a testament that nice guys do not always finish last. As he puts it, if he is kind, if he is always positive, it is STRATEGIC. Its how multiple versions of himself survived the hardship of every universe he is in. His kindness is his enlightenment. Its his weapon to fight all that is negative. Its what empowered Evelyn, its also what saved their business and marriage. When you reflect on all that, it is our unwillingness to be kind is what fucks up this world that we have. it is what triggers hate crimes, wars, famine, etc. Instead of destroying each other, why dont we help our own species survive and thrive?

I always perceived the lighting change as a way to demonstrate the universes splittig when Evelyn makes a choice. We've seen it twice already by that point. First, when Jobu tells evelyn to punch her and the lights switch as they have many different interactions, before settling on a punch. And a second time, when Evelyn is convinced by Jobu's Nihilism and attacks Waymond in many different ways, and in the end only having stabbed him with a glass shard. I especially prefered this interpretation, because it implied that when she's holding his hand and seeing him with loving eyes, this isn't just something Evelyn is doing here, but something she's doing in every single universe. As the lights keep switching and the angles keep changing, but she stands still, gazing into his eyes lovingly, finally seeing the loving husband she's been dismising this whole time. I might be off. It was my interpretation at least. It makes me cry when I think about it

People who have claimed Waymond is weak or a “beta male” have completely missed the point of his character. If anything, he is the strongest character. He doesn’t rely on violence or intimidation to fight. He doesn’t use cruelty or anything evil. He fights with his heart. He fights for his wife, marriage and family. And he does it all with his warm heart and smile. He is able to see the good in the world despite all of its flaws and his patience and compassion are admirable in a world that views him as weak when he’s not. Everyone needs a Waymond. The world needs more of his philosophy and if we had more like him instead of shaming people like him for just wanting to see the good in people and the world, the world would be a better place. It is easy to be mean and spiteful to someone. It is harder to maintain your smile and kindness for the world. That’s why Waymond is strong.

This scene struck me very deeply. I have a strict mother who stresses as much as Evelyn, and I am very grateful for her endless sacrifices and devotion. But sometimes, she forgets to speak kindly to the her family members. She forgets that when we are joking around and being kind and friendly, we are not "being useless" or "not contributing to the family". We are actually trying to help lighten her load (of course we help her with chores too), and that she should embrace life with a more joyful attitude and appreciate the little things. I think many mothers around the world can relate to trying to keep the family's finances and life together. Remind them that you are there to help and never stop loving them (unless they're downright abusive). They have taken on more responsibility than they can bear, and the stress is a lot. I think spouses should learn to communicate better too. Evelyn and Waymond have very different ways of coping with life, and it was only after a life-changing even that Evelyn could understand where Waymond was coming from. I teared up during the laundry and taxes scene - a movie scene where a man is vulnerable and honest and wise is rare. Usually it's the woman having to empathise and understand, but men can and should learn from Waymond too :)

This movie also dives really deep into the emotional/romantic disconnect that's so relevant in Asian culture. Asians typically do not show affection like how most people in America do. Rarely will you see Asians kissing, hugging, or holding hands in public. A lot of Asians don't even do that in private either. Which makes Evelyn embracing Waymond at the end so meaningful. There's no doubt that there is love between them. Asians tend to be very "Acts of Service" when it comes to love. We'll do your laundry, we'll make you a meal, we'll pack you lunch, and we'll say you're getting fat because culturally we lack the language (or cultural norm) to tell/show others that we love them. So when Evelyn finally embraces Waymond at the end, it's one of the most emotional scenes. Waymond has been by Evelyn's side for years. He's constantly AND consistently being kind, patient, and gentle. Then Evelyn finally remembers, that's exactly why she married him. It's the exactly why Evelyn says, "... the universe gave her someone kind, patient... and forgiving to make up for all she lacks."

Waymond is the most consistent character in all multiverse. Even in Alpha verse, he is respectful of Gong Gong. He loves evelyn, eventhough his duty outweighed his love. He is the only one who is optimistic, empathetic and loving. Even his worst persona in Alpha world is loving. I think the most misunderstood is gong gong. He loves but in a harsh way, he believes that the best version of evelyn is the version he envisioned for her. That is why in opera world, he feels so different. However, we see Alpha Gong Gong pleading with Evelyn numerous time to not fall into darkness. We also see Gong Gong giving evelyn time to convince Joy. The only difference between alpha and the other universes is their determination to kill alpha joy at all cost. It make sense given that they saw the true number of people killed by joy in the different universe

I just found out about this movie today from youtube and i just cried and went thru so many emotions while sitting in the bathroom at work taking a dump. I thought you needed good drugs to feel this way

One thing that this video helped me notice is the use of the lighting. When you see her first split universes, the present universe has a yellow hue and the "other" universe has a blueish hue. To cross dimensions, you have to do something unexpected which in this scene was holding Waymond's hand. Instead of jumping universes, she went back to memories which also is why she has the yellow hue on her face. She's looking at him for who he is in the present universe instead of going to other universes.

This scene is EVERYTHING! The exact translation from Mandarin if anyone is interested If there were a reincarnated life, I would still choose to be with you; filing taxes, running a laundromat. I cry everytime I see this scene which is about 63 times 😢❤

Absolutely beautiful my man. Such a good analysis. This sequence was perfection, warms the cockles of my heart. It leaves a lump in my throat just thinking about it. It is this sentiment that the world needs now more than ever, more love and kindness, focusing on what is really important, what is truly valuable. The call to simplicity, just cuts through all the bullshit. I felt enlightened. This is the power of film, of art. ❤

Great video analysis, and thanks for educating us on filmmaker Wong Kar-wai! I wasn't aware of his work, but his visual style and storytelling approach sounds fascinating, I'm definitely going to check out his work.
@EACru2002 Жыл бұрын
I agree with the video that In The Mood for Love is his masterpiece, but if I were to give advice, I would actually advise starting somewhere else with his filmography. I feel like Wong Kar Wai is a filmmaker you kinda have to get used to, to warm up to. In the Mood for Love is like his opus magnus, but that means it’s also “the most Wong Kar Wai” Wong Kar Wai film. And if you’re not used to him, it might be a bit too much, or it might not catch your attention because it’s so stylistic and seem underwhelming just because you’re not familiar with the style. I would recommend starting with Chungking Express and follow it up with Fallen Angels. They’re not linked or sequels to each other, but they’re kinda like “sibling” films to each other, made back to back quickly and similar styles. Just keep in mind that his films are kinda like tone poems. Don’t focus too much on the literal plot or story. It’s more a mood. A feeling. Let the cinematography, dialogue, music, wash over you. At first I didn’t “get it” while watching the movie but by the end credits, I got what he was going for. And then once you learn that, then I think you’ll be prepared and ready to watch “In the Mood for Love.”

i went into thisi movie knowing i would like it a lot. Upon seeing it a second time in theaters, I knew it was not just that i like this movie, but that it is hands down my favorite movie ever. I cant think of anything that comes close to it on my top ten favorite movies list. (Interstallar is my number 2, and it still just doesn't compare). I cry every time i see this film, it honestly deserved to do so much better at the box office than Dr Strange did. The emotional impact of this movie is just amazing. It somehow manages to weave so many different narratives into a cohisive story with unified meaning. and its just so beautiful. i need everyone to sit and watch this movie. It's long but every scene is justified and it's never slow or boring. I dont know who sold their soul to make such a master piece, i think this will be my favorite movie until i die.

Another thing I love about that scene that wasn’t covered was Waymond saying “this is how I fight” in reference to seeing things with kindness and finding the good in people. His whole monologue is truly one of the best ones I’ve ever seen

The scene where Waymond pleads on behalf of kindness, it puts tears in my eyes...even now, just _thinking_ about it. Ke Huy Quan's delivery of that scene was just...well...Oscar-worthy! OH MY GOD!!! I just _now_ realized that this line specifically references the _IRS_ issues their _laundromat_ is having...in another life. That's brilliant!!! _How_ did I miss it before?!?!?! Side Note: In addition to the amazing performances (It's about time Michelle Yeoh got her due!), my teenage daughter and I came out of the theater discussing what _technical_ awards the Oscars should consider. We thought, for sure...but were wrong about...cinematography, but we were right about editing...one of the seven Oscars it earned. Just an amazing film!

Thank you for confessing that you cried dozens of times while editing this amazing breakdown video, as I have NEVER ONCE watched this movie, this clip online, or almost any insightful review of this without SOBBING from center of my soul. "Yanks tears right out of my eyeballs" is a great way to say it! Ke Huy Quan delivers to humanity the very greatest acting performance of 2022, and even though he unequivocally deserves the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor... it's not even close enough. Money, awards, praise... will never come close to the JOY this man gave us with Waymond doing laundry and taxes with Evelyn Wang 🥲😭😍 thank you for this video and for not getting sucked in by the bagel 🥯⚫👹ALL HAIL JOBU TUPAKI! 😇

The fact that he says being kind is 'strategic' and a 'survival tactic' just blew me out of the water. I've had to be submissive and pacifist as a survival tactic and the moment I was out of that situation, i let the anger take over and became bitter and angry, thinking that i needed to be a strong harsh person to ensure no one took advantage of me ever again. All that did was make me feel out of my own skin and push away the few genuine friends i had. So for the last couple years I've been really confused as to what to do, how to be, who to be. Never expected a movie character to clear up that choice so easily. That being kind isnt submissive or weak, it's a different kind of power. This movie has literally been life changing for me

Yeah you are right that is the best scene of the movie and there is a lot to learn. I broke into tears when he said "This is how I fight". Normally our idea of fighting with the world is based on being physically and mentally strong but he taught me that we can fight using positive and kind actions as well. I also learned that a person that seems goofy and insignificant on the surface can have an extremely wise perspective of the world. I may be wrong but i think in this scene the frame is divided into 2 parts , on one side shows character and other side shows character's perspective to the life weymond's perspective is peaceful but the evelyn's is smocky.

In addition to the spot on analysis here....the power of this sequence in Everything Everywhere is inevitable. The entire movie is setup based around the notion of laundry and taxes being a metaphor for the mundane drudgery of our every day lives. Rich Waymond flips that idea on its head, resulting in one of the most romantically pure moments ever seen on film..... For me, the real payoff is watching Evelyn's reaction, like she just got nuked with a wave of positivity in a way perfectly underscored by the background music. Wow.....

Just came across this video (since I've been watching so many videos about Everything Everywhere All at Once after the Oscars.) Pretty spot-on analysis. The only thing I will note is that the subtitles in the film are reversed, in that while the subtitles say "I would have really liked just doing laundry and taxes with you" whereas in the original Chinese he says "filing taxes and opening a laundromat." I don't know if there is any added meaning in the reversal or if it is just because "laundry and taxes" sound better than "taxes and laundry." Just something I found interesting.

Ah, the Bagel. This film really brought home to me that we all fight that horrible moment one thinks, "why/how do I go on?". For love. For the miracle that existence is, regardless of the way we choose to visualise it, is simply the value of existence itself. I'm probably being a bit cryptic but I found the film eminently relatable, but then I am a diagnosed adhd...

The song that Waymond is singing while he is cleaning is 'Gong xi gong xi' or 'Chúc Tết' in Vietnamese, it is quite popular in China and Vietnam during the Lunar New Year. Although it's a pretty upbeat and fun song, the lyrics are mostly good wishes for each other, but in this scene it's quite sad but also meaningful. I can feel that in the chaos, brokenness and harshness of life, Waymond is simply doing his job well and reminding everyone that today is Tet.
