I just picked up a second hand washing machine that I intended to use. Mould on the door seal of course. I mixed up soda crystals and bleach to toothpaste consistency. Applied liberally, left it for 15 mins. Cleaned off with sponge, done it again and the seal was like new. Not a single spore of black mould. Cheap as chips, and the whole process was less than an hour but mainly waiting, no scrubbing what so ever!

Wow, we’ve had our Whirlpool front loader for 8 yrs now and from time to time I have wiped inside that seal. We’ve always left our washers open as far as I can remember as a child. Never had a smell or mold problem whatsoever either on top or front loaders. It definitely makes 100% difference to get into the habit of just leaving the door open 100% of the time when not in use.

I leave the draw slightly open as well to prevent mould growing in the draw compartment. When we used to leave it closed, we had a problem with mould growing in the top of the draw compartment blocking the water jets and had to regularly clean it with a steamer. As well as leaving the door open, I also use a washing powder that contains oxygen bleach, which is a highly effective microbiocide. When I stripped my machine down to change the bearings after 10 years use, I didn't find any mould or bacterial grime on the inside, it was nice and clean and smell free. The only issue was a few areas with limescale deposits from not descaling it for well over a year. I suspect the same measures also helped to prevent the aluminium alloy spider in my machine from corroding.

You can get at least one US model with a fan in it so you don't have to leave the door open - I think it is called Ultra fresh. Also some uk washer dryers (which I wouldn't consider buying) run their fan after a wash if you do a wash without the drying cycle, although possibly that's to stop the aluminium fan corroding.

I always leave the door open instead of closing it tightly when the washer is not in use, I've never had mold in my washer. Regular cleaning and running it on the "clean washer" cycle once a month keeps it clean, I also quit using liquid fabric softener because it gums up the working parts.

You sure we have to give up on liquid soaps? Because as I've read somewhere liquid detergents are best for cloths in front loads being soft on cloths! Even our LG washer manual suggested not to use liquid detergent. I've a couple of bottles of liquid detergents- about 2 litres now. I'll buy powder ones. But when I used powders, the smell was really strong from washer though. Very confusing. I've heard extra detergent (powder) leaves more mould.

Most ppl thinks their washing machine (or any cleaning device for that matter) works like magic or something. This is one of the reason why the manufacturer(s) recommend to run a tub clean every 60 or so cycles with bleach/baking soda to prevent escalating issues like mold, bacteria(s) growth, etc… Nothing fancy, just bleach ought to suffice or vinegar for those green folks. Granted, you happen to have a horribly designed silicone bellow/seal hence that prob.

@@btshomedition That's the conclusion I'm coming to as well. I will be replacing the bearings and possibly the spider arm on our machine soon. It just started making a tremendous roaring noise after I ran some Simple Green through the machine. I saw that online as well as a possible solution to the mold problem. The noise could be just a coincidence, having shown up right after I ran the Simple Green. I've been in this machine enough, at this point, I have no fear about tearing it apart. I've heard friends say they had nothing but trouble with the gasket but I was able to remove/install the ring from the front panel of the washer without a problem. It can't be much harder to replace the darn thing.

I have had front load washers for 20 years and have never had mold in mine. I do wash my towels with Clorox so it may be the reason why.
@btshomedition Жыл бұрын
Top loaders are less prone to this issue which explain why you probably never experienced this issue.

My bad, I don't know why I had top load in my head. Lol. Do you leave the door cracked?
@twosawyers Жыл бұрын
I try too but sometimes we’re just close it but we do have a water softener the has less minerals so calcium and soap scum buildup is less of an issue. I heard that lessens the chances of mold as well.
@btshomedition Жыл бұрын
You're absolutely correct, the quality of the treated water definitely has an impact on how quick mold appears. I will be installing a whole house water filtration system in the future.

Mold and bad smells is a common issue with front load washers, yet they are what most people want and pay big $$$ for. I don’t understand this. Top load washers have been around for over 50 years and don’t have theses issues. They clean just as well if not better and usually are less expensive.
@btshomedition Жыл бұрын
Great point. Depending on the house layout, a stackable pair may be the best option with limited space. Also sometimes the laundry room is right by the garage door so esthetically, it looks better. But as you mentioned from a functional perspective, the top load does the job just fine!

My childhood home has a top loader and even then I grew up with always keeping the lid open. In my current rental, I share a front loader with housemates and they always forget to leave the door open!
@seashackf1 Жыл бұрын
@@GoalWalker yup, it’s easy to leave a top loader open as it doesn’t inconveniently stick out into the room. It’s not really necessary, but there’s little downside to doing so.

I did this before but it messed up my clothes, I’m moving into a newer unit but I noticed there’s some junk

When cleaning the gasket, you always have to make sure that all product residue is gone before washing clothes again to avoid any potential damage.

Some had mentioned that you can also use pool shock and bleach. Maybe that is available in the Philippines?

The key is to let air dry out the bellows after each wash. I have not had this issue since leaving the washer door open.

@@btshomeditionwe wipe it all down with microfibre towels as well as inside the fold and under the fold where the slits are immediately after every wash and leave the door open for hours. Still get black mold.

I stopped using fabric softener and also only use powder, this has made my machine stay cleaner, also do some hot washes now and again.

Everyone should stop the cold water washes, use good detergent, and at least one load of items with chlorine bleach a couple of times a week. I've had a FL washer since 1997 (same washer all these years) following the above and have never seen a speck of mold in it.

You need to just take the entire gasket off. It’s not hard. Then soak in hot water with vinegar. Scrub with toothbrush. Let completely dry before reinstalling gasket. Leave door open. With mold that bad, you also need to take the drum apart and clean it also.
@btshomedition Жыл бұрын
I have already replaced this gasket before and it does take a decent amount of work to take off and reinstall. So this is an option to fix the issue but more importantly, stop the issue from ever occurring. For anyone who want to disassemble the unit to soak the gasket, @JenniferAguiartampa has provided a great procedure to take care of your problem. Thanks for sharing. 😃

I'm sure just 50-50 clorox and water would have worked too. What the video brought out is how long any cleaning product needs to be in contact with the seal like a day or more depending how bad and that several applications may be necessary
@btshomedition Жыл бұрын
True Story. If you never let it get this bad, then maintenance is quick and easy. If it gets bad, multiple applications must be done until the problem is fixed!
