Laura Bretan - O mio babbino caro 🎤

"O mio babbino caro" ("Oh my dear daddy") is a soprano aria from the opera Gianni Schicchi (1918) by Giacomo Puccini to a libretto by Giovacchino Forzano. It is sung by Lauretta after tensions between her father Schicchi and the family of Rinuccio, the boy she loves, have reached a breaking point that threatens to separate her from Rinuccio. It provides an interlude expressing lyrical simplicity and love in contrast with the atmosphere of hypocrisy, jealousy, double-dealing, and feuding in medieval Florence. It provides the only set-piece in the through-composed opera.
The aria was first performed at the premiere of Gianni Schicchi on 14 December 1918 at the Metropolitan Opera in New York by the popular Edwardian English soprano Florence Easton. It has been sung by many sopranos. Dame Joan Hammond won a Gold Record in 1969 for 1 million sold copies of this aria.[1]
The aria is frequently performed in concerts and as an encore in recitals by many popular and crossover singers. It is used in several films, and some bands cover the aria in their own style.

The voice teachers say that she is straining her voice, but that is not the case. The Vienna Boys Choir did not strain their voices either. She feels what she sings and she has perfect pitch (a gift from nature). Bravo!

The clarity and diction she displays is special in itself. It sets her a apart from a great many other vocalist. World class really. The fact that she is so young and has decades to deepen her tonal art she is most likely going to command the circuit. I would also add that this young woman is also extremely beautiful in body and grace. She will become very popular in a great many arenas, not only giving operatic performances. As she matures and her voice and depth grow, she may become the premier artist of her time. After following her performances on You Tube (such as I am doing now) I have seen a growth in not only her maturity as a young woman, but I hear a maturing in her voice, range, and talent, too. It must be difficult to perform in an environment where you are being constantly subjected to professional judgement... especially against other vocalist who share the same dream as you yourself do, and who you watch mature and bloom as well. We all know she aspires to entertain, however, in a judgemental environment it must wear heavily that so few can cause her advancement to skyrocket or perhaps an intense stagnation in her career and possible aided growth. Singing in front of thousands on its self carries a great deal of both exhilaration, as well as an inner fear of possible rejection. Knowing you are going to be judged against others must increase the levels of stress and anxiety. If found to be lacking in anyway, the artist has no further chance to enhance the judge's opinion towards their favor. So I would think performing in front of judges just may be the hardest part of her becoming a professional performing artist. She has the voice and the talent, with or without any talent competition being her transportation into main steam. Coupled to her youth, and her beauty, nothing can stop her from reaching her goals in my opinion. She has had the exposure now, there is nothing that can hold her back except her own drive and ambition. And I believe she has that in spades. Simply put she is world class, and at her age her zenith will be years into the future. She will be a sensational star in her own right, and of that I have no doubts.
