This is Laura's cousin Danny. Thank you for posting this bare and intimate version of Emmie, a song which Laura said was "about the eternal feminine." The cycle of a girl becoming a woman, and here, Laura the young woman lyrically longs for, but ultimately kisses goodbye the fading innocence of her girlhood. A beautiful and unique expression of self-realization. It never grows old. Thanks for keeping it alive! Wishing you the best.. Dan

Are you the same guy producing Caroline Polachek's Pang? I always thought Polachek looked like she could be Laura's secret daughter.

I feel Laura has always been a part of my life. She has been my friend and I love her. Her music is personal, truthful, revealing her intimate self in her amazing lyrics. She sang her life and the life of New York bringing people close to her. She was a gifted genius and I still long for her music. Her voice -soft, sweet, powerful and free. Thank you for posting this beautiful rendition of Emmie, always one of my all time favorites.

I first saw Laura at SUNY @ StonyBrook-just before she performed, or right after, this concert. The stage was bare, except for a large grand piano. A rose, in a vase, was set atop the piano. After a few moments Laura, literally, seem to glide out, a few feet above the ground, in a logn white dress-she was mesmerizing!

@JigsawCaptain Laura refers to her younger self as Emmie, and her "mama" would have, indeed, been her mother, my Aunt Gilda, a wonderful, protective lady who doted on and guarded Laura, and with whom Laura was extremely close. This was my Aunt Gilda's favorite song of Laura's.

I know this song isn't actually meant to be about a lesbian relationship, but that's how I interpreted it when I first heard it and it really grabbed my heart that way. "I swear you were born a weaver's lover, born from the loom's desire..." what a beautiful mind, that such words could come from it

I agree with you. I think that this song means an hypothetical dialog between The "Young Laura" and The "Old Laura"; Eli´s and The 13th Confession back cover shows it too.

My Goddess ......some think that this Lesbian Love Song (written in 1968 ) was too radical for its time & might have gotten her black-balled from the mainstream , celebrity , fortune and respect. ......I think she was quite eccentric and uninterested in all those superficial rewards ....which is why she is my Goddess.

engpauloh, props. Do you know the date of this live performance? btw Thanks for the back cover of Eli. It was Laura's keepsake of "Emmie and her love to be," Maria Desiderio! Laura at 19, Maria was thirteen, "so let the wind blow...Timer, I like her song and if the song goes minor I won't mind." If you want the skinny, Google "An Open Letter to Dan Nigro Re: Laura Nyro" The Appendix has the '68 Van der Horst in-house rave revealing the origins of: "Emmie" as me; and the Back Cover of Eli.
