Add a false beam over the pipes. It is convenient if you ever need access to them. And it’ll just look like an oversized roof support.

This was exactly my idea. Doesn't even have to be a full sized beam, just something to extend it. Only challange would be to make it look old and worn.

Find an old beam and make a fake. The problem with uneven insulation the heat transfer will drive through the clay walls. More maintenance on that side of the building. Good luck, there is always something in building science messing with aesthetics vs function.

Agreed! All things considered with what we see with the house progress, add that stress on top of maintaining a long distance relationship…. Laura certainly has earned some “vacation time” in terms of publication scheduling. ❤ everyone deserves a break from work without guilt… I’m willing to wait to see what Laura builds next because it’s likely to be slightly less awesome than the portable DJ booth. 😜

One thing I learned is that, in construction, you have to specify everything. Because everyone has a different idea of the "right" way, and plenty of people will do whatever is easiest for them, regardless of either aesthetics or impact to others downstream.

Yes, that's what I was thinking as well, be very clear and precise in work instructions instead of expecting them to understand how you want it to be. I once had this in a totally different line of work. Before, my then boss used to communicate with a external programmer about features he wanted in software and he didn't get what he wanted. When I took over, I used to specify in detail how we wanted it and that worked out a lot better.

Moving right along! After 20 years restoring a Czech farmhouse - we’ve learned one most important rule - always be present (or have a friend present to call) when work is being done. It can be darned hard, but there are ALWAYS some wonky decisions to be made & hired technicians/craftsmen will happily take the easiest & least aesthetically pleasing path every time if it’s up to them. 😂 I’ve seen some real horrors and expensive redos. We’ve put some things off for months just so one of us could be present.

Well, what people useally do, is mark the positions or talk it over with the people involved. If you just say like, feel free, this is often te result. So it's a bit tricky to say who's "mistake" it was. But even if it was my own mistake, I still would have moved them. Although now you will see all kinds of holes in that nice beam.

Honestly, if it was me and my house, I would call them back and have them relocate the pipes to the ceiling and get them off of the beam. They were doing a shortcut by attaching them to the beam and they probably expected you to lower your ceilings all the way, even with the beam, so I would call them back and have them fix what they did. They shouldn’t charge you because what they did was wrong.

Having worked in a modular home plant in the US for over 35 yrs, it's so strange watching how you do things in Germany. I also remodeled my, at the time, 50+ years old house. Not being critical but our homes are built and finished so much simpler and cheaper. It seems like your house could withstand an T4 tornado while ours would explode like a soap bubble.
@solitarelee6200
@solitarelee6200 10 ай бұрын
Oh that is so absolutely true. I was in a modular home and there was a tornado not even like. That close? I mean it was close enough that I could see it but it didn't actually hit me or anything. And I thought for sure the entire house would come apart just from the wind, it was shaking like it was going to lift off the ground and send me to f*cking Oz. I still can't believe I'm alive. The valley I was in got wind storms and even with a complete line of trees in all directions blocking the force of the wind, every time it sounded like the roof was going to tear off (and that roof did weaken enough from the wind that we had leaking problems the whole time we were there.) And don't get me started on my DAD'S 120 year old home! We wanted to remodel it the way Laura is, for decades, but after about the 90s there were simply not contractors willing to work on it. They said the only thing to do was bulldoze it and build a new one. It had very few issues in the 90s due to our efforts but with 30 years of being unable to find contractors to fix problems... well, the people who said to bulldoze it are winning in the end.
@tims8603
@tims8603 10 ай бұрын
@@solitarelee6200 That was probably an older modular home. The early ones were just glorified mobile homes. The new ones are built much more sturdy. Still, compared to what Laura is doing to her house, they are fragile. Probably because labor and materials costs are so high here.
@tommoxjr
@tommoxjr 10 ай бұрын
Everybody in Europe, the UK and Australia, who used to watch that Reno program where they shouted “move that bus!” to reveal the new house, was astonished at the flimsy quality that passes for building standards in the US, even in non tornado prone zones. I’ve had 2 tornadoes in the time I’ve been in Oz…lots of trees down, a few fences down and some roof tiles dislodged…..except for a poorly built old folks’ home, that was de-roofed, few houses suffered much damage. Double brick or large cinder block construction is still the norm.
@RaXXha
@RaXXha 10 ай бұрын
This is just how we build houses in europe, we build them to last for a century at least. 🤷‍♂ There are also practical reasons. The reason we use OSB behind plasterboard for example is so that we can hang stuff on the walls anywhere and not worry about finding studs for example (as a bonus to making the walls sturdier). In scandinavia we genereally build single family homes with timber, but even so we still tend to build for longevity, so we rarely use just plasterboard on top of studs like in the US.
@Allexz
@Allexz 10 ай бұрын
Living in houses that are 200 years old is not uncommon in sweden and other parts of europe. Things are built to last. In the long run they cost a lot less to heat and upkeep in general as well, which is a requirement since our costs are so much higher than average.

You have to admit that she has used them in projects before this. When she mentioned storage I thought she meant IN the bathroom… Then she went and got the boxes and was framing that out for the boxes…and put them in there and was talking about the storage, counter…with them in the wall. I’m thinking no she can’t possibly be leaving those in there, but it seemed like she was. Yes it would be completely counterintuitive to the aesthetic she’s trying to make within the house, but Laura can be very practical at the same time. (Oy)

Hi Laura, Thanks for the video. The disappointment at the start with the plumber/hvac guy work is kind of a classic. I should know, I am a plumber and HVAC guy. The bathroom and all the pipe work should really be planned and prepared beforehand. There's a lot of explaining and telling what results you expect. I know I used to really go out of my way to make sure the client knew what I was about to do, and what the result would be. But I am a really rare one, I came to understand this as time passed by. I didn't get to the end of the video so I don't know if there are any more surprises, but this is quite the classic. In the previous videos, you didn't seem to know exactly what to expect at the end, and were going with the flow. Some artisans might take advantage of this to go the easiest route for themselves (and the most profitable one as well), wich might not me satisfying for you. I know you have your LA project, but if you aren't coming to the jobsite several times a week, you are bound to more dissapointments like this.

I am not a plumber so I don't know what options there were other than moving the upstairs bathroom so it was closer to, if not directly above, the lower bathroom. As a plumber do you see other options?
@Kelvallontan
@Kelvallontan 10 ай бұрын
@@christopherroth7239 Well I was short on time,so Icouldn't develop earlier on. Yes, I would say Put it directly above, or plan alternative routes. The chute could have been near the exterior wall and all the tubes inside the insulated lining for example. There are some things you cannot work around. For the evacuation collectors, you need to keep a slope angle, and it will be under your apparels, so you have to take it into account no matter what. Putting the evacuation drain in the middle of the room without checking with the client is a recipe for redoing your work. It all depends on the choices the client wants to make. There's a proverb here that more or less says "chosing means giving up". Our job is to make sure the client knows what feasible choices he has in hand, what they imply. Most of the time, he will have to give up on something to get something else, but at least he did it knowingly. In my eyes, it's not the crafstman's job to chose the general orientations. His job is to enlighten the client so he can be satisfied with his choice for the years to come. And then transform this choice into something tangible. Laura's weakness in my opinion, is that she does a lot of unplanned things. It can be a source of inspiration, but it can also leave a lot of room for error from people that aren't on the same wavelenght as her. She would have to supervise the jobsite every day at the start of a new craftsman, and every other day afterwards, if she wants pleasing results. By this I don't mean staying right behind the craftsman. More like having a control session every evening after work, and immediatly pin down what doesn't fit.

Maybe this is just the Brutalist in me talking but, as intrusive as those pipes are, I can't help but also admire the workmanship, even if it is entirely function over form. I feel like you could change the cladding to something more aesthetically pleasing and leave them visible as a feature. I don't know if the steampunk look appeals to you, but it's one option.

This is also why you either have an architect or show up on site when they're working; if she'd been there when they were laying out the pipes all of this could have been avoided...

Yeah. I mean, I have no idea what her esthetic preferences for interior design are, either. But exposed pipes next to wooden beams is definitely a look. It's an option.

My first thought while you’re fixing the cut out. Let the glue dry, then I laughed a little! Haha. I totally agree with the bad day gets worse theory. I had the “dropcies”, everything I was holding in my hands that day, I dropped at point or another. You just gotta roll with it. Things are coming together it seems. Thank you for bring me along on your journey. Be well, Laura and team.

Laura, I think you should turn one of those baskets around so that you can have storage in the bathroom. A place for towels and scents and things. Just food for thought.

This video might be one of my favorites! This! This is exactly what trying to do your own projects is often like except you are actually doing AMAZING but sometimes it just is like that. Also: I definitely thought the aluminum boxes were going to be covered but for a second, when you mentioned the smells I was all....but no, Laura, that can't be open, right?! Maybe the beam stays exposed just a little bit, like fachwerk? Not sure if it'll work here. The number of times I've come into a remodel project and gotten sad after the plumber and/or hvac has come through...well, pretty much every time.
