Changing the downstairs bathroom into a utility 🧺 room + toilet sounds like a wonderful plan. In spring/summer you may want to use the sun ☀️ to dry your laundry outside, plus when you have guests staying over, they don’t have to hear the washer/dryer as it’s downstairs anyway. BTW, a beautiful autumnal makeover 🍂

Things to consider if having laundry upstairs are plumbing, weight of the machines and vibrations of the machines. Myself I prefer having the laundry downstairs. Here in Australia washing is generally dried outside on clotheslines in the garden and sunshine. Those that use electric drying machines will find thar doing so will be even more frowned upon given that electricity is going to be harder to afford...and resources for creating electricity is changing.

Lovely vlog🙂. I am British but live in Germany at present. My laundry room is on the first floor with the bedrooms and I love it😍.. everyone just throws their washing in the laundry bin in there.. and i don't have to carry washing up and down the stairs. Also we spend more time downstairs..so the noise of the washing machine and dryer does not disturb family life downstairs. My laundry room is tiny but has a window. I have a vertical 3 shelf washing stand so can hang washing to dry in there (so I have reduced using dryer). You could have used the table runner scrunched up a bit in the centre of the table to "ground" all the centre table decor. It would have looked soft and romantic whimsical.

Utility upstairs absolutely! So much more practical as is a shower downstairs...think ahead children and dogs. Still loving this shirt🥰! Put a mix of Tumeric, ginger, cinnamon and black pepper in your hot chocolate. It is a brilliant anti inflammatory and is very nice on it own too. Sending everything good your way. xx

We are doing a renno on our Victorian house in UK v similar style to yours - we are putting in a utility room down stairs - I don’t think an upstairs utility makes sense due to noise and bringing stuff down to hang out - also a utility is more than just for laundry it will provide extra storage for kitchen type stuff and another area for hand washing/paintbrush washing etc - a downstairs shower that gets used so infrequently when you will soon have 3 upstairs bathroom areas makes no sense . Good luck ! :-)

I would keep the shower downstairs for puppies and guests. I think laundry upstairs is more practical, so you keep it out of sight in case you have friends or family over. I would use the space down the stairs as a wardrobe for coats and boots, bags, ... Keep the bathroom downstairs, it will always be a plus

Great question Laura. I have a laundry area on our second floor and it has its Pros and Cons. We have had leaks ( which was a nightmare, they have to rip out walls to find the leak) also we had to replace our washer and the poor delivery men had a hard time getting it up the steps and in place. I felt so terrible for them. Pros are the convenience alone hands down. Personally, I would move it into that small bathroom and call it a day. Good luck with you decision.

Loved this vlog so much. You’ve made the house so perfectly cosy for autumn. Just a thought…Could you maybe place the loo in the place where you presently have the washing machine and dryer? Maybe time and money wise it won’t work but if it did, you could then have the whole utility room for that purpose only. ❤

Definitely keep a laundry downstairs. I think in Australia (even two story homes) tend to have laundrys downstairs with direct access to the garden outside to line dry our washing in summer. Wet washing is heavy so I can't imagine lugging it downstairs all the time to hang out. If it bothers you enough p ut in a laundry chute somewhere upstairs that directly deposits dirty clothes etc into a space downstairs. And before everyone tells me you can't line dry clothes outside in the UK I live in one of the coldest states in Oz and we still predominantly line dry!

Keep downstairs laundry but smaller appliances, trust me when you have little ones it will be amazing, You will be very time poor when you have children, for at least 15 - 20 years.

We just redid our utility room, check it out on our channel MyHomeFarm. No I would not put a U.R upstairs, my parents did this in the UK and we all decided it was awful because when you upstairs in the bedrooms all you could hear was the washing machine or dryer going and it just made extra mess with laundry, drying, ironing etc. I love my new utility room near our kitchen , it is super useful having another space with a sink, especially when one of you is in the kitchen washing up and the other person needs a sink for maybe flower arranging or cleaning etc, so I love it. One thing we did do which is very USA is I raised the washing machine up, to avoid bending over and dragging clean sheets out on to the floor as much and it has been a game changer, I would never go back. Also I added a wooden rail over the top of the sink so if I do need to stain remover, or hand wash something I can just pop it on a hanger over the sink and it can drip dry. Very useful. Good luck, I know yours will be stunning. x
