You guys are such a sweet couple and your KZbin has grown a lot in the last 6 months! Honestly I'm sure others would agree that we wouldn't mind you putting some more adverts in your videos - especially based on the views you're getting. It can be a small help with the financials but also KZbin prioritises monetised vides and it would be great to see a genuine, down to earth and humble couple like you guys grow your channel and be able to work with brands.
@ArabellaWright5 жыл бұрын
@Ronja Giesen Oh I completely agree - just beginning and end was what I was thinking. Can't stand the constant ads aaaaall the way through. From what I could tell Laura doesn't monetise at all which is a shame as she gets great views and I'm always happy for one or two as I feel it's only fair being that I don't pay for the content.

As someone from Northern Norway (really cold place) I never understood the British obsession with carpeted floors, we don't have them at all here. (I've at least never seen them in any homes) and there are reindeer eating flowers in our garden in the summer and Northern lights in the winter here. In other words; we're far north. I personally think wooden floors (that don't have massive cracks or anything like that that will let the cold through) with a big rug over is much more flexible. If the rug gets grim you can always wash it or replace it.

Oh please Ollie and Laura, try to keep the original timber windows, my husband and I renovated an old house , actually two, (by Aussie standards) and we restored all the windows, we even had leadlight replaced that was damaged. It cost us hardly anything because we did it ourselves but if you can afford to have them done and the price is similar to new PVC, definitely restore. The quickest way to devalue a house is by putting in new windows that aren't timber! I used to want to cry when others would rip out their stunning original windows and stick in aluminium framed! Thanks for this video btw, I LOVE watching your reno journey. It's one of my fave things to do myself and I so appreciate people saving old houses, especially young couples doing it all themselves, just as we did. GOOD JOB. X

My mother’s house is 100 years old and she had an organization come through to see about replacing her windows since they her original and hardwood framed single pane. She thought for energy reasons she would have to have them replaced and they said that they are more energy efficient than people think and she isn’t losing heat or gaining it by them being there so she should keep them which adds value in the end! If I were you I would get them repaired for now and then maybe later you could change the glass if you thought that was needed! But if you can save it keep it! I know the house is probably older than 100 but my mom is in America so we don’t have many old homes standing here haha
@LauraMelhuishSprague5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Careth! That's insane but I suppose the reason why they aren't always efficient is that they are drafty, as after all they have been around for 100 plus years! It was super nice for the organisation to tell your mum to keep the originals in and not try and persuade her to change them 😊

You can get a carpenter to repair/refurb your current windows. While doing this there is a possibility of converting them to double glazing with increasing the size of the recess. You will often be surprised the condition the windows are in once the old paint work has been stripped.

I really enjoyed this different style of video. It' so lovely to see the dynamic between you when you don't both have paintbrushes in hand! Renovation videos every two weeks would be great but so would a bumper monthly version - do whatever works best for you!! It made me laugh to see you 'discovering' the carpet in your attic - I'm renovating too and my attic contained the off-cuts from every carpet in the house AND the previous kitchen which had been carefully dismantled. As for flooring, I would install wood floors or refinish those that are salvageable and then you just roll out a room rug on top for warmth. I have a hundred year old house, and in our upstairs bedrooms we did that and never regretted it. Wood is worth the cost, and the carpet provides sound deadening for the floor below and also adds comfort. Plus the wood always looks suitable.

We were going to replace our timber windows but got them stripped, reputtied and primed with an undercoat. They now look almost brand new, but retain the character of the home. Last year we replaced our old windows with timber sash. I must say they look beautiful but the practicalities of them make me wish we had gone for the alternative. They absorb water alot, especially being so high up on our 3rd flood and need oiling frequently with adverse weather. Our next door neighbours have just replaced their windows with wood grain effect uPVC sash windows and honestly they look identical next to ours without the maintenance that we have and for a fraction of the cost! If we did it again we would 100% got uPVC 😊 Love your videos and would love to see them more often x

I recommend pvc windows. My mom, who lives in the southern USA spent a fortune restoring the original windows on her 1920s cottage. They look great, but it has done nothing to improve heat and cold loss. Plus, they require constant maintenance. I live in Italy and when I redid my apartment I opted to do double glazed PVC windows. It was the best decision I’ve ever made! It has made such a difference in terms of heat loss/gain. More than paid for itself. Also, I’ve had absolutely no problems with the PVC. It looks new after 20 years with no maintenance. Another option is to do PVC with wood interiors. You get the look of wood on the inside (where you’re actually going to be close enough to see it) and the practicality of PVC on the outside.

Personally I would go for the new wood windows and just do it in phases as you can afford to rather than pvc. I'd make temporary repairs to the current windows to get by. I find that the pvc windows just dont match the character and repairing single pane windows is just delaying replacing them. Double panes are way more efficient which saves money in heating anyway. However, I'm sure it will be lovely no matter what you decide. Best of luck!

Also three bird Reno’s do a bathroom lay out often that might work for you. Starting from the back of the room there is a bath with a shower head next to it and then a glass screen. Then toilet then sink closest to the door. Because the shower is half open to the bath it needs a lot less room

Architect student here: go for double glazing ( I don't know if you said the PVC sash option came with double glazing), but that would be my call. You will spend less on heating, and also cold houses have such a terrible effect on health, that double glazing should be standard. If you want to save money, only double glaze the windows that are north facing (no direct sun) at first, and update the existing/get single glazed PVC for the other windows until you can afford to update it all. Hope this helps!

I live in a very old house in germany and let me tell you....there is nothing more important than good quality windows!!!! The heating cost you save over the years alone is so much. Yes keeping the originals is nice but living in a always half cold house (in winter at least) is not worth it in my opinion. (You two are so cute btw. :D )

Why do you want to remove fiberglass from the attic? Fiberglass is considered safe and efficient insulation. It is not like ground up paper insulation or asbestos. I added a second layer of fiberglass blanket to my attic to increase the R value and save on heating costs. Are practices so different in the UK compared to US?

I would keep the wood floors, but I absolutely hate carpet so maybe mine is not exactly an impartial opinion! If you're worried about the sound, there are some sound proofing products on the market that could possibly solve your problem. About the windows, I live in an old house and living with the original windows became a bit of a nightmare, overtime there were drafts coming from everywhere and the single glass wasn't helping with energy efficiency. We switched to PVC keeping a design respectful of the house and we couldn't be happier, from temperature to sound and everything in between, they are pretty near perfection.

I would get your acrhitect to advise on the windows and the foam in the rafters. The windows are too low, they are not child safe and most likely do not conform to building regulations. If you left the window open a child could fall out. Don't know what your surveryor said about the foam but some foam traps moisture and can cause damp on the rafters. It can be a bodgers trick when you have no sarking felt and the roof is leaking. I would get the foam and the roof checked out professionally before doing any renovation work, it is best to start from the top down on these old houses. If you have a slate roof say you need to get the nails checked out, the nails usually fail after 100 years and need replacing.

Please don't put in any uPVC - even when people try to replicate the look of the original windows, it never looks right and once in they will probably never be changed again for proper replacements. So many older houses have been spoiled by plastic double glazing! I love the top floor room with the fireplace and understand your flooring dilemma. Floorboards look good, but can be noisy whilst carpet can cushion sound but take more looking after. Looking forward to watching your plans for the rest of the renovations taking shape.
