Every once in a while, the planets align and the world is gifted with some truly special people. In this case Stan & Ollie :) Everything was absolutely right. The 1920's, black and white, the simpleness of times, humour in its funniest form without having to be rude or offensive and of-course, these two with their hysterically funny comedy sketches that no one can ever copy. What a pair! I still watch them when I need a smile put back on my face and never tire of it. Mankind doesn't deserve much right now.... but I am truly grateful for Stan & Ollie.

As a kid, I always saw references to these two but only recently have I actually sat down to watch the shorts and I can honestly say it's not what I expected. From the (almost all silent) references to Laurel and Hardy I saw, it never gave justice to how the two actually ACTED or worked, just their LOOKS. What I EXPECTED were a duo who would both sort of be the same silly but gentle type who would get into trouble and again their visual differences would be the key thing. I DID NOT EXPECT Ollie to be so FORWARD and LOUD while Stan is the near-silent air-head who would occasionally say the perfect topper to Ollie's already frazzled nerves. And I love it. I watched more of the Stooges as I was growing up but the styles of both groups are different and the way that their shorts are shot and written gives a unique feeling to both. One thing I noticed was in terms of how the Laurel and Hardy series is framed. One of the jokes with the Stooge shorts were that they were SHORTER than a lot of their co-stars, even the women. But in this case, Ollie has such a presence not just in his personality but also his height. Everyone sees him as 'the fat one' but I didn't realize how TALL he was in real life so in combination with his mannerism, he always comes off as if literally talking down to everyone around him so those moments where Stan embarrasses him or someone else gets the better of him makes it all the funnier. The best example is in a short where his wife finally has enough of him and plans to hit him on the head but because she so much smaller than him she orders Stan to get out of a chair so she can actually be the right height to hit him. It was perfect not just for such a cartoonish gag but just to show Ollie getting bested by someone who was nearly half his size. These shorts are just amazing and I love them.

Isn't it odd, and more than a little sad, that when you talk about comedy no one is ever mentioned from today? They say that audiences are more sophisticated today but that's not so.
