Yami Yugi could indeed start shadow games. It is in fact his whole thing in season 0, the original story the author intended to write. This whole card game thing just caught on as ONE of those episodic adventures and became a whole thing on its own.

Reminder that the next two episodes are abridged into one. You _mighty want to build up a buffer of the actual show ahead of the Abridged Series, or you're going to rapidly outpace the real show, by a significant margin.

I imagine that Yami couldn't do it with his Grandpa because he's not in the presence of his grandpa's soul to do it. He can do it here because he's in the presence of both Bakura's soul and Evil Bakura's soul. It also wouldn't matter if he could or couldn't do it with his friends, because if he loses the shadow game, Evil Bakura could just send them all to the shadow realm again anyway. I'm naturally speculating on all of this of course.

The Millennium Puzzle has this power, just for the episode, as this episode is a filler, trying to recreate the introduction of Bakura and the evil spirit of the Ring in the manga.

Mai does get a lot more attention in latter seasons, where she does get an interesting character arc. For now, she's really just a joke character in Abridged the first couple of seasons. Since the quality ramps up a lot in Abridged later on, it gives you something to look forward to, whether its the OG or Abridged.

shadow games - yami no gem(u). He can, at least in the Manga and Season 0. And the manga version knows no chill and is the one who starts most of the yami no game, he ends a few people because they cheated in those games. Losing one isn't fun, but cheating is a worst idea. One guy got burned to ashes. In Season 0 it is show that the worst consequences are just illusions, at least when yami does it. But the people he does this to lose it completely.
