After many years of trying to choke my pick to death and playing from my elbow I had decided that Tremelo was just not for me. In just an hour after watching this video my tremelo is not bad for a geezer. Thank you Lauren.

I have the same thing with my pinky lol, it actually hurt to use my pinky in the beginning but the pain subsided, idk if I’ll ever have the strength I want in my pinky but I can do my best, lately especially I’ve been doing pinky strengthening exercises

Full respect to Bill Monroe but I just don’t care for his playing. Love his tunes but don’t care for his solos. I really don’t like when players use Monroe licks to get out of a jam

David, one subject I was hoping yall would talk about is the slides. Probably my favorite part of any Monroe style player. Compton does it a lot, Lauren does it many times in this video, and obviously Bill did it. I would love to see one of these deep dive videos with Billy Bright. He takes a lot of these Monroe aspects and blends them with a lot of Grisman vocabulary. Awesome player. Thanks for your work, David!

Why do people try to copy Bill Monroe’s sloppy mandolin playing? There are so many other Mandolin players that are miles ahead of Bill Monroe’s skill level. Don’t get me wrong he was a good song writer and very creative but he sucked at playing mandolin.

Many of the super fast mandolin players I hear sound the same. For me personally, Bill Monroe’s playing moves me emotionally much more than a lightning fast blur of mandolin notes hit perfectly. But then again, I prefer Neil Young and Bob Dylan’s guitar playing over Joe Satriani.

@@Bigboigamerguy Actually, "bluegrass" doesn't pre-date Monroe. Like the other poster said, you need to spend some time studying the genre. Rossenberg's "Bluegrass" A History" has widely been regarded for over a quarter century as the the best treatment on the genre's history up through the '60's. He has a whole chapter just on the nomenclature of the genre term "bluegrass", complete with extensive primary source citations. Needless to say, your claim is simply wrong. As far as the corporate sell-out thing goes...that's just a bonkers claim. His earliest stuff was largely played on a Strad-o-lin - basically everything from 1936 until approx. 1945 when he most likely bought his F5. In 1951 he sent his F5 to Kalamazoo for extensive repair work and was so disappointed in the turn-around time that he gouged out the Gibson logo on the headstock and spent the next 34 years trash-talking Gibson. So, for essentially the first 50 years of his career, he either didn't play a Gibson, or was talking about how much he hated Gibson. Furthermore, your comment seems to imply that Monroe was somehow gaining massive wealth ("selling out") because he played an F5, which couldn't be further from the truth. The F5 was a failed experiment as far as Gibson was concerned and the overwhelming amount of their revenue came from guitar sales. The fact that a niche hillbilly artist played what was essentially a niche instrument in their overall instrument portfolio amounted to squat for Gibson in the forties. Furthermore, it's not like there were a ton of mom-and-pop luthiers turning out mandolins for most of Bill's life and he "sold out" by going with a big name brand instead of an "indie" mandolin. EVERYONE who played mandolin for most of the 20th century played a mandolin that came from a large music company, with nearly all of them being Gibsons. As older, world-class luthiers like Gilchrist and Kemnitzer have pointed out in interviews, it's only in the last thirty or so years that a lot of small builders have entered the market. During Bill's lifetime, if you wanted a mandolin, you basically had one company's instruments to choose from and that was Gibson. If you're just a troll...well...whatever...that's pathetic, but a troll's gonna troll. However, if you actually believe the things you wrote, I'd strongly suggest spending more time learning about the history of the genre and the instrument about which you are so profoundly mistaken.
