Fun fact about Takahata101, the voice of Alucard: you may have noticed his voice sounds a little different between episodes 1 and 2 of Hellsing Abridged. According to him, he experienced an injury as a child that left his nasal cavity out of shape, giving his voice a slight nasally tone. After episode 1, he had surgery to fix that injury, which also removed the nasally tone in his voice and let him sound a little deeper in his performance.

Alucard was seriously flexing on them by sending those messages by carrier pigeon, Pigeons were used to carry messages in the old days because of their instinct to return to their nest/place they were raised regardless of how far, meaning that Alucard was able to get into the Vatican and stay there long enough undetected for the pigeon to not only hatch but grow to adulthood before he took it England 😂

BTW, the Van Helsings are canonically related to the Belmonts (*which explains a LOT*). Trevor Belmont (*Ralph in Japan; for some reason he’s the only Belmont w/ an overseas name change*) had 3 kids, Fredrick, Mary, and Ann. • Fredrick married a woman named Janis and continue the Belmont line. • Mary married a man named Leo Van Helsing, which made the Van Helsing branch that led to Abraham Van Helsing (*whom you saw in Alucard’s flashback dream*). • Ann married a man named Lloyd Morris, which made the Morris branch that led to Quincey Morris and his son and grandson. Abraham Van Helsing and Quincey Morris are from the Bram Stoker novel Dracula (*i.e., the novel is canon to the original timeline in the games*). Fun fact about the guy who plays Hellsing in the third episode, the guy who impales Alucard in the beginning: he's voiced by Funimation's very own Christopher Robin Sabat who also plays Vegeta and Piccolo in DBZ. Apparently he became friends with TeamFourStar and even does voices in a few of their shows but since he was under contract with Funimation they had to change his name in the credits so he didn't get into trouble.

There's a good reason for the one piece opening. TFS premiered episode 1 at a convention but had only announced that it was the premiere of a new project not related to DBZ. So it's all a fairly great troll on their fans.

Everyone says that until you actually watch the anime. The similarities is, like, maybe 1%. Yes Jan is a loudmouth, crass, and lacks pretty much all semblance of humanity; but he wasn't just an outright rapist like they portray him here. The character they got right 100% was Luke from his minor appearances.

@@dumpsterfiregames4710 Nah, I've seen both the original adaptation and the Ultimate OVAs, and he's about the same. All they did was make him even more cartoonishly one note. The vibe and delivery is still spot on. To be fair, he's actually funnier in the Ultimate with some of his "blink and you miss it" lines, like his tiny "...ow" after getting shot, when he's getting arm-barred, he's like "I'm supposed to be on top!" or just straight up doing the Konami Code when fighting in the mansion.

@@oblivious8868 From everything I've seen and looked into, he only ever makes one to two rapey remarks, one just in general and one directly towards Hellsing. And that's the point I'm trying to make. He WASN'T that bad in the anime, maybe the original OVA he goes a lot harder since they're usually allowed more free reign on what can be said, but other than TWO sexualized remarks, I don't get why they made it his entire personality. Hell, in the anime his first conversation with his brother is about how some crazy f*cker got a glass pane installed in his head so you could see his brain, not how he had sex with a freshly dead corpse like in the abridged. When he's being a smart ass it's absolutely spot on, but they overtly turned up the rape aspect because....comedy?

@@dumpsterfiregames4710 Yeah, I'm not sure why they focused so much on that aspect, but that's what I was getting at. His tone, delivery, and general irreverence is just right. The exception is him being a walking erection. It's there, but not cranked to eleven like in the abridged. In fairness, the horny is cranked up in general for the abridged version, but it's nowhere near what makes it funny. It's why I'm looking forward to the later episodes.

Alucard's response at the beginning of episode 3 of "The Aristocrats" is a reference to a joke comedians tell each other to describe how dirty they can make "The Aristocrat" joke while staying funny. The most popular example is done by either Bob Sagat or Gilbert Godfrey. It is intentionally the most disgusting joke they can come up with.

Ooh, here we go. Funny enough, this, just like Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, is not the first time the manga was adapted into an anime. The first time was in the early 00's and like with FMA, the anime quickly outran the manga (though, from what I gather, it's more cause the author wasn't particularly quick to get around to making new chapters), so they had to come up with some original ending and big villain. Then they waited and made this completed version, with seemingly higher budget.

I'm sure you've heard who voiced Alucard... Other TFS members in this are... Megami (Bulma ~> Ser Integra), Lanipator (Vegeta/Krilling/Piccolo ~> The Major), Kaiserneko (Trunks ~> Pip), Jesse (Misty/Jessie of Pokemon 'Bridged ~> Police Girl), HBI2K (Nail ~> Alexander Anderson) and so many others. The best thing about the carrier pigeons is that, from what I've heard, they only fly to the place they were raised. Which means Alucard always had access to the Pope and just fucks with them. Dude is a Chaos Gremlin entirely. TFS didn't really change a lot at all about most of the characters in the series. Maybe different words, but pretty much it's all the same, just a slight comedic tone.

The "Count Chocula/Frankenberry" reference is a hint at Alexander Anderson's nature. Alucard, being a vampire, likes Chocula, while Anderson is a bit like Frankenstein's monster, since he's got Nannites that repair his body and some cybernetic enhancement (Though Alucard still considers him human.) And yes "The Crimson Fucker" actually does have a twitter/X account.

I really kinda hate how this series starts. They first unveiled this at a con, saying they were starting a new series and not saying what. The One Piece fakeout and ultimate reveal worked in THAT context, but for the rest of time... it's just awkward and stupid-feeling. All it does is confuse the audience, who deliberately clicked on a video titled "Hellsing Abridged." The BEST you could hope for is the viewer frowning at the title to make sure they didn't miss-click, but... eh... I almost wish they'd done an alternate intro and left this one as a deleted scene.

Yeah they used ableist slurs like three times, twice in DBZA and once here iirc, but they don't use those as a crutch so while those specific parts aged, the overall episodes (early DBZA and especially early Hellsing Abridged) have held up quite well overall imo. The first Hellsing Episode is definitely the weakest with the pedophile jokes being a bit too numerous. The jokes in themselves are perfectly fine, it's just that comedy come from surprising the viewer and it's not as unexpected the third time around even though it's the best execution with Seras saying "Wait, I'm not an 8 yo boy", that could have been genuinely great if they hadn't conditioned us to expect those jokes, but that episode still has a lot of clever writing like the framing device for the beginning of the episode, which is used as a comedic tool in itself, that was just perfect. The second episode is kind of chilling but in a good way. People are desensitised these days so it takes a lot to rattle anyone, but the younger brother managed that a bit, his dialogue is awful but very well written imo. The "prayer in school" joke is particularly great and I appreciate how much effort the entire US government has gone through to make sure this joke stays relevant for years to come.

So, a warning...once you've seen the Abridged, you will find the original Hellsing Ultimate series very hard to tolerate. TFS really nailed taking the core story of _Ultimate_ and giving it a humorous and still fairly canon refresh. It's a bit of a shame, because the original is very good. If you're not too far into _Abridged,_ I highly recommend binging _Ultimate_ before going any further.
