Granada, Nicaragua is one of the most places where we travel to and plan on just spending a few days, and that turns into a few weeks, or longer. It's a gorgeous and charming colonial city, the oldest in Central America. The lively, colorful streets filled packed out with festivals and live music will win you over quickly! This city has the best of Europe and Latin America all in one place. All at the base of an ancient volcano and located on Central America's largest lake.
There's 365 small islands created by ancient volcanic activity nearby called 'the isletas' to explore by boat, where you'll spot birds, fish, and monkeys in the wild.
You can go hiking to view an active volcano lake at Masaya Volcano nearby, one of the only places in the world where you can look down into flowing lava!
You can spend the day relaxing at the nearby Apoyo Lake, which is located inside of a crater inside of an ancient volcano.
You can take a day trip to the capital city of Managua, or the colonial gem, León. You can pay a visit to one of Nicaragua's beautiful beaches, or, our personal favorite option, go visit the beautiful Ometepe Island. Which is a huge island with two volcanoes located in Lake Nicaragua (aka Cocibolca)
There's an INSANE amount of things to do in or nearby Granada, it’s an amazing place to travel.
One of the top attractions in Granada is simply enjoying the city itself, walking the streets, meeting people, and eating the food! This is what we enjoyed the most and the real reason we kept extending our stay. Stay tuned for all the info on all the amazing places you can visit in an upcoming travel guide.
So come along with and spend the day with us exploring one of Latin America's most beautiful cities!
If you're new here, welcome and we'd love it if you would subscribe to our channel! It's free and easy and really helps us out!
For those of you who have been traveling with us for awhile, thanks so much for your continued support, amigos. You all are awesome!
See you out there! :)

Thanks for watching 🙏 Hope you all enjoyed! While we had an amazing time in Nicaragua and actually had some of our all time favorite travel experiences there, it wasn’t all great. We had a few negative experiences in the capital city of Managua, that I think will be important to share so you all can avoid a similar situation. We’re working on a video now explaining this, as well as covering the good, the bad, and the ugly of traveling through Central America. As well as general travel tips we’ve learned along the way for that part of the world, and how to stay safe, have fun, etc. Stay tuned and don’t forget to subscribe to our channel! See you out there! 😊

Thanks! I really enjoyed the food! What we didn’t show as much of in this video is all of the international food there. There’s lots of stand alone ‘mom and pop’ restaurants who do things pizza, American breakfast, Greek, etc and do it really well. We never had a bad meal there.

Hey guys ! Now you are back closer to our old neck of the woods. Lidia grew up in Corinto, largest port town. How is the heat? 😂 We could end up retiring in Nicaragua but if we do it would be in Matagalpa…get some cooler temps. Any chance you will head up that way ? Even cheaper cost of living…not many expats. That Vigaron in most cities would cost $1-2. Granada is pricey by Nica standards. Nacatomales are nice, but I always have to find the Vegan version. Gallo pinto is yummy and everywhere. 3 months and we retire and head to Mexico first. If you ever find yourselves back in San Cris, we’d love to grab lunch !

That is really cool! We’d love to check out the largest port town and her home city! For sure, thanks for the top on Matagalpa, I remember you mentioning it before and I made it a mental note to pay it a visit! That’s good to know about the prices, because we definitely want to spend a lot more time in Nicaragua and seeing more outside of Granada. The heat 😂 🥵 it’s too hot in Granada for sure. Reminds us of when we stayed in Merida, Mexico. But how nice everything is kind of makes up for that. Yes, we would love to meet up for sure and get a bite. Keep us updated on your travels!

@@spark_6710 Depends on the city. Managua, Grenada, Leon, San Juan del Sur….probably can find a few restaurants. Here in Matagalpa there are very few people that even know what Vegan means. We have a few places that veganize dishes for us, like a good pizza place.

Thanks so much for your reply ! I watched so many videos of Nicragua for two days in a row !! Lol But, as soon as I started vegan dishes / vegetarian meals popped out without googling for it !! I got lucky somehow many of the KZbinrs were vegans/ vegetarians, or people like trying them out by accident I found !! San Juan Del Sur & Managua seem to be the places for us !! Thanks 😊 💜🥁🐉🎤🎶💞

Y'all are in my old town -- owned a bar/restaurant there years ago. Was actually at the grand opening of TGC -- which is more like a jungle now! I loved Granada despite the heat, the bugs, and the F$LN. Actually, I could've lived with the first two 🤨🤪

Hey, Good to see you guys out exploring Central America again. We've had Nicaragua in our top 5 expat retirement destinations for a while. We have friends from there and my wife has travelled to Grenada and San Juan Del Sur. The problem is the government. As long as the Sandinistas are in power it's just too risky to establish long term plans in Nicaragua. There are other options such as Panama, Costa Rica , and Belize that just offer more stability.

Just a couple of points to sort of clarify. The vigoron. The ingredients are simple and in abundance: boiled yuca, the root, not to confuse with yucca the ornamental plant; pork rinds (chicharrón )topped with shredded cabbage, chopped onions and tomato marinated in vinegar and salt and if you like you can ask to have chile pequin added, very small, like a pea almost and hotter than jalapeños. So, yuca instead of potatoes. Nacatamal. No nacatamal from any fancy restaurant is going to compare to the nacatamal from a traditional nacatamaleria, a place that all they cook is nacatamales, unless the fancy restaurant buys the nacatamal from one of those places and that is probably the case since the process to prepare, wrap and cook the nacatamal it's a very long and tedious one, and the price presently is no more than 50 Cordobas. Also it's a meal that we eat traditionally on the weekend only. Accompanied by either tortilla or bread, black coffee or soda, coke or your preference. No gallopinto with nacatamal. Never. Any city, no matter how small, you ask anyone on the street to tell you where nacatamales are sold you'll be given directions to the best place to buy the best nacatamal, and everyone has a favorite place because there are always more than one to choose from for sure. Glad to see people discovering the things that we nicas love about our little, suffered but beautiful land. Welcome and enjoy your stay with us.

Thanks for visiting my beautiful country 🇳🇮❤️ , that Nacatamal.was kind of pricey at the Park maybe cause it's a tourist area, a Nacatamal usually cost only 40 or 50 cordobas , and btw the owner of that Kiosk called "El Gordito" just died last week , but his family will keep running the business , a little history fact , Mark Twain went through Nicaragua , also a Merchant who had a ship from NY (Vanderbilt )from the famous Vanderbilt Family, relative of the famous designer Gloria Vanderbilt, he was buried at a small cementery in San Juan del Norte , I hope you guys return again and visit the north side where I'm from ,greetings from Los West Los Angeles , it was a nice video 🙋❤️❤️

Tamale or tamal is actually a Nahualt word. The only people that spoke Nahault dialect (Nahualt is not a language) were the Aztecs and other groups that live in central Mexico. So no matter what other Centro Americans say a tamal is Mexican. Aztecs never lived in Guatemala, Honduras o El Salvador. So there are no cousins that are only fake tamales. A lot of the food and beverage are copied from Mexico in Centro America and South America. Also, Mexicans, contrary to what we believe in the States, are NOT big rice & beans and/or plantain eaters like they are in other parts of the Americans.

Every central , south american country has their cuisine. Not relatable in anyway to each other cept for the ingredients. Once you taste the nacatamal im sure you noticed it, it taste nothing like a tamal you would of had anywhere else. Nicaragua has its own well known, copied and even out right stolen recipes that other countries are starting to claim as their own, like the tres leches cake.

Glad you’re liking it, as a friendly tip, try local street vendors, food is cheaper and a lot of the times they’re wayyyy better🫶🏻 You should definitely go to cañon de Somoto, Volcán masaya (active volcano) or cerro negro (you can go sandboarding).
