The papery ball is an oak apple gall. It is a deformity of the oak leaf caused by a wasp. The wasp larvae are gone by the time the gall is found on the forest floor (hence the holes that already existed). It's actually a very interesting relationship between the wasp and the oak.

I happen to LOVE the Kite Hill yogurts. They now have plain/original unsweetened in large tubs, which is a great base for savory dishes or if you want to add your own sweet using fruits, etc.
