Thank you for stopping to take the time to talk about OCD. My daughter who is 15 was just diagnosed with OCD and she is also Autistic. OCD is not cute or quirky or funny. OCD is not needing things to be a certain way or being a germaphobe. It is so much more devastating than that. To the point that intrusive thoughts interrupt you activities of daily living. Not showering or eating, not going to the bathroom because these thoughts run lose and repetitive in your brain. Washing your hands 10 times in a row to the point of raw bleeding skin. Not being able to focus on anything or answer a simple question such as are you hungry? It’s much worse than people think. Thank you again Sara, because your explanation was spot on! 💙

So sorry your daughter is having to live with this illness, you sound like a very switched on parent that is trying to do all you can for your daughter, I really hope there is something out there that's able to help her. As a parent of 4 myself it's heartbreaking to see them go through something that you just can't jump in and fix or take the burden upon yourself instead. I totally agree with the sentiment of "it's not, cool and not fun" the amount of people that claim to have OCD just because they are anal about a couple of things truly gives me the shits, it's a real disorder and people actually suffer tremendously from it. Yes, my daughter is on the Autism Spectrum and was diagnosed with OCD 3 months ago. That was after almost 6 months or more of symptoms really starting to stand out from her norm. After medication she is starting to come back to somewhat normalcy. The thoughts still come but are a little easier to break free. . My daughter and I watched an very good interview with Howie Mandel about his OCD and how he still struggles with it still. I understand the pain you go through. I hope you have found a way to cope and live your life to the fullest! 💙

As someone that struggles with OCD, I’m so glad you cleared the confusion up regarding what it really is. It’s a very serious and debilitating mental disorder. If anyone on here struggles with OCD, therapy DOES help. A therapist can help sort through your thought processes and you can learn ways to manage it.

Thank you for talking about OCD! Ruminations are so complex and not at all what ppl think. Dry skin is a big thing for me. If i leave my lotion at home, its literally all I can think about. I'll eventually have a panic attack if i dont get lotion. Even hearing dry skin makes me compulsively need to put on lotion. Same thing with carmex. I have others, too, but those are the ones that most ppl notice are a bit off.

@Annie497 EXACTLY!!!!! I have been late to work lost jobs had lots of relationship issues. Especially romantic ones. I’m just now finding real tru love and acceptance but it’s been a long uphill battle. And that started in mid to late 30s. I have anxiety problems and other issues as well I believe the anxiety issues for the most part go hand in hand with ocd but I agree with the live a day in my life then make a joke or think it’s cute! Actually I would never allow it as I wouldn’t wish this on an enemy even! I also hate when ppl joke about bipolar for ppl who aren’t!! That shit isn’t funny either. And to battle both at once is extreme torture. My ocd overrides my bipolar I like to say. But when it reverses and my bipolar is overridden by ocd then I need help and need to be kept a close eye on. That shit has gotten serious. But everyone is different. And I’m glad that it’s stigma has lifted much more than it was however with everyone being so sensitive to everything it’s shocking how many ppl joke about having these things. I may joke at minimal times to keep from crying or breaking down but only with ppl I trust and know why I’m doing it

I have BPD and I want to shed a little light on the grudge thing, only as it relates to my experience. It’s sometimes called “black and white thinking,” in that it’s hard to see people as nuanced complex beings. If someone does one thing you think is wrong, they’re now a bad person. You know it’s irrational, but it’s almost like that was your first impression of that person - you might be able to move past it, but you likely won’t forget it. It’s so bizarre bc I’ll see a name or username of someone I had a negative interaction with years ago, or just posts or comments I read and wasn’t involved in, and I remember. I remember that they’re an unsafe person for me. This is very rarely something I’ll voice to others, and much more rarely something I’ll say to the person themself. Because oftentimes it’s over something relatively silly. However, the bright side of this kind of thinking is that I don’t easily overlook red flags in others lol.

Thanks for talking about OCD in a respectful yet totally chill relatable way- I know we as a society all joke about it when anyone is a little too obsessive or organized "I'm so OCD about this" and that is totally fine and meant to be lighthearted! Have a sense of humor, folks! I'm all for it :) Even in our house, we giggle about our own mental health struggles because we all have a dark sense of humor but also tons of empathy for each other. Our oldest child has struggled with OCD for last 7 years and we have witnessed firsthand the toll it has taken on them. It can truly be debilitating when anxiety and stress levels are high. OCD is actually just a super niche form of extreme anxiety. (I have a touch of too that comes out as "magical thinking" in times of high stress) Thankfully, with the right meds (prozac is a good one for this) and a wonderful therapist who specializes in OCD, they are getting lots of help and support and have really come a long way. I'm incredibly proud of the amazing human they are, full of love and empathy and for the hard work they've put into healing. All of that being said, what a piece of poo this Laurie Dann was and the parents?! Don't even get me started. Awful. Give Murray extra Greenies and ear scratches from me ;)

I was in high school just a few miles away in Skokie, IL when this happened. I heard during school that another school was being shot up a few miles away. But nothing happened other than rumors running amok, we were allowed to still move freely. School shootings are so common now & there are things put in place to protect kids that didn’t exist back then. It’s not just a problem since Columbine. It was always been there, in my life. And still….nothing has changed when it comes to how we deal with mental health. That’s so sad how we fail each other.

as another person with OCD - you gave a great drive-by explainer about this condition that I really appreciated, and I also wanted to add that a much less understood element for some people is obsessions or compulsions around perfection that are more socially motivated. a lot of people with eating disorders are suffering from OCD, and some people who display patterns of attention-seeking are as well - basically, the same thought mechanism that might make one scratch or wash one spot on their body until it bled can also make them obsessively try to make their bodies perfect or punish themselves for not having the relationships they think they should (see: scrolling social media, looking at "happy" couples, and thinking there's something wrong with you because you're not one of them.) you could argue whether or not that's related to this case, but OCD is absolutely wild and I always feel compelled to try to help other people understand it!

The parents were definitely negligent. It is a shame that the way people viewed them was more important than their daughter’s mental health. At that time, mental health was extremely misunderstood. We are better as a society now but still have a ways to go.

WHOA, okay, haven't even made it through the video yet, but I had to comment that I sincerely appreciate your explanation of OCD. I've got it, it sucks, it's hard to make people understand how debilitating it can be. I definitely know that the compulsions I get are illogical and won't actually help, but the obsessions make living a normal life impossible. This disorder has wrecked many of my relationships. Made it impossible to attend a traditional college (I graduated online!). Sometimes makes it hard to do daily things that others take for granted, like going to the grocery store or visiting friends. It's frustrating to try to confide in others that I *want* to act a particular way, but I have this obnoxious disorder that makes that a true battle...only to have them say something inane like, "Oh I know, I'm so OCD about my desk/purse/house/whatever." OCD can be messy. Chaotic. It's definitely not something you'd humble brag about. Thanks for coming to my TedTalk. Also thanks again, Sara. As someone with BPD, I can confirm that we love hard & HATE harder. I wouldn't want to be on the bad side of someone with this mental illness since letting sleights against us or loved ones go is not in our nature. Also, we have a problem with aggressive disproportionate escalations. I have OCD and my name is Lori (pronounced like hers) so this hit close. I don’t experience it to the degree she did but I feel her. There are several types or categories of OCD, such as contamination OCD and while we have intrusive thoughts, they aren’t thoughts we want to have. It’s sad Laurie decided to treat her harmful intrusive thoughts as one’s she should actually do. I wish her parents believed her about her disorder. My parents don’t know about mine but I have other disorders they refuse to believe so there’s no point in mentioning my OCD. My other disabilities affect my life in a greater way and it’s so important when we can have people that are supportive of us. It’s important also that our voices are elevated, that people listen to us and believe us when we share our stories and not just rely on outside voices to educate them. I wasn’t a fan of her things being called kooky but overall this was told with care. I appreciate that you made a point of saying people with OCD aren’t inherently dangerous people. Most people mention mental health disorders and conditions people have and don’t say they aren’t the cause of the crime and that could be dangerous for every people with the same things.

I think the OCD was a hiccup compared to the other problems she was dealing with. Her parents should have gotten her help, but from what Sara said, it sounds like the mother was suffering from some of her own mental issues (apple didn't fall far from that tree). I'm sorry you aren't able to share everything with your parents and I'm hoping you are getting help, that you have someone to talk to. I want you to know - You matter! No Stephen Caffey played Valerie Bertinelli's "love interest" in Murder of Innocence. Peter Strauss was in a horror film which had a very similair plot line (Peter Strauss is married to a woman with mental problems played by Judith Light) so I think mabey that's how you confused them.

Can we please have more Murray ASMR? I for one would definitely sub to that! I used to have a poppet named Romeo, he slept on my head and purred me to sleep. I miss that. Loved your Laurie Dann coverage, my husband and I used watch a show on OCD, I can't remember the name of it, but this story reminded me of it. People with OCD really suffer and are usually stuck in rituals they desperately want out of. I obviously believe there was a lot more going on with Laurie that was undiagnosed. Maybe if she'd been alive today, where treatment is different...who knows. Thanks for the video and your makeup looked awesome!
