The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

Thank you so much! It's always wonderful to see the great tenor Lauritz Melchior! This performance comes from the same episode on which Lauritz sang "Some Enchanted Evening" posted awhile back. I hope we will see more of Melchior! It's also really good to be able to watch all the different renditions of "Vesti La Giubba" on the Sullivan show. It's a favorite with tenors and each puts his own unique stamp on his interpretation. Thank you again!

Melchior was the great Wagnerian heldentenor of his time. A remarkable life.

Back when 60 million people gathered around the television set to watch Ed Sullivan who always included a classical music artist on his weekly shows. Now? Nada!!

Always thought he sounded a bit odd on recording. Considering how beloved he was, I wonder what it was like to hear him live.

I’ve listened to many of Melchior’s recordings over the years, and his later film and television performances. In my view, or rather to my 👂 he still stands as the greatest Wagnerian heldentenor in history. Of course, I never heard him “in house” so I cannot comment on the difference in sound versus his recordings. By those who did hear Melchior live, it is noted that he possessed a large powerful voice in his prime, capable of being heard over those surging Wagnerian orchestras. I would bet the sound was thrilling! It’s unfortunate there was no stereo sound recordings during his prime. Because of this, we are left with only a hint of what we might have had otherwise. It is what it is. To your comment that Melchior sounded a bit odd on his recordings, I agree. The oddity for me was after he transitioned from “chest voice” into “head voice”. His covered sound in head voice was extremely noticeable, and at times unpleasant (odd?) to my ears. Some tenors have a much more agreeable sound once the transition is made into head voice. And sometimes so well done that the transition between registers is almost imperceptible. I have no idea why Melchior sounded this way. Some thoughts of mine are: possibly his retraining from a baritone to tenor i.e. he was taught that way. Or perhaps (disregarding a poor technique) it was the best he could manage. Keeping in mind that Melchior was “doing it correctly” meaning to transition into the covered sound in head voice, for me the sound he made at times was so damn unpleasant. That is what I would describe as odd. Because of this greatest of all heldentenor, and being paired with the greatest Wagnerian soprano of the 20th century, Kirsten Flagstad, the “German wing” at the Metropolitan Opera of the ‘30s and ‘40s has never been equaled. Well, that’s a few of my musings. Am I as clear as mud? 😉

1 Corinthians 15 15 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; 2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. 3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; Romans 10:13 13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

This is all well and good, but it would be nice if you chose videos that you like enough to post a favorable remark rather than indiscriminately hijacking comment pages to spread the "Gospel," which so many of you rude people are wont to do.🙈🥺😫
