She explained a toxic relationship to the tee. I've been in this situation too many times. Thinking we're making progress and being shot down to be told it's not working. And then every time i was ready to end it, this person would jump every obstacle and climb every mountain to get me to stay. It took me 7 years to get out of the situation for good and this song just sends me back every time i hear it.

He has written every lyric himself & he went through some very dark times. To know that someone you respect knows what it's like makes you feel less alone. Now, he's in his 50s, has a stunning wife (Mariqueen Maandig), 5 kids & is getting his due respect in the industry. He's one award away from an EGOT, putting him in the same group as John Legend, Elton John & very few others.

As a man who was the toxic factor in my relationship, this song even makes me cry because I knew I was hurting my ex with my emotional immaturity but could never put it into words. I just knew I was doing her more harm than good. It hits home when you realize you’re putting someone you love through turmoil cus u can’t regulate yourself. I’m sorry. I wish I never hurt you the way I did.

I am so blessed to have been alive to personally experience that Lauren Hill, India Arie, Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, Aaliyah, Angie Stone (ect) music era praising natural minimalist black beauty and brown skin. The ending of this time period praising beautiful black woman is the start of the sabotaging of the image of brown skin and natural hair being beautiful which lead to this fugazi ass era we are in now where black woman are not taking pride in themselves because they don't feel like they are enough and black men dishonoring the culture by disrespecting and degrading his counterpart more frequently and publicly while simultaneously uplifting the Europeans standards of beauty. We are trying to get back there and I have absolutely no doubt that we will in time. I love you Ms. Lauren Hill, thank you.
