There's always much to unpack in every Lav Diaz film. I love his interpretation of the Malay concept of time and space. I don't always notice it, but it really does go beyond aesthtics and into very powerful story-telling. Great stuff

His works remind me of the poetic cinema of Andrei Tarkovsky, the way they both use movement and nature to capture meaning

Diaz really is in a class of his own. His understanding of time, not only in a durational sense (where most directors tend to stop) but spatially, letting every movement matter, is far more adept than most. Showing how transfixing liminal space can be when the audience can take in every square inch of what's happening in the frame. His place in cinema's canon will be guaranteed, if only by a small group that seeks his contributions out.

His place in cinema history is set. As the most accomplished and critically acclaimed filmmaker of Filipino descent. He alone has achieved the highest honors in cinema the Philippines has ever gotten (which would have been topped by Dolly if she won at the Globes a few months ago)

Man, I feel like there's a good lead-in for a great story. Good stuff! I especially like the dialogue between the father and lieutenant made me want to go study the history.

Rod Joseph Thanks! Yes, Diaz’ stories are deeply entrenched in history. His films are a treasure trove of inspiration

Definitely not. Tarkovsky seeks ascension, while Diaz seeks reality. In terms of schools of thought regarding cinematic language, they have very little in common. Would be like looking for the commonalities between the Spanish and Mandarin language. If there's any director to compare Diaz to, it will probably be Pedro Costa or Ashish Avikunthak, and even that is stretching it.

@@zeadsi maybe it's the music at 2:20 which is from Andrei Rublev... But I reckon the similarities are way more obvious than that, too.
