Thanks for teaching us how to care for lavender! I have about 5 Spanish Lavender plants and I'm always so worried that I'm pruning them wrong. I like how you spent an entire video on this plant, it would be great if you added more videos like this 😊

Janey, lavender is very easy to propagate if you want new plants. They grow quickly from just a tip cutting into a 1gallon size plant in just a few months. I was showing a few people how easy it is by just taking a few tip cuttings in early April, I just stuck the cuttings into a grow bag filled with soil and basically forgot about it. I looked at the plant this week and it is a beautiful midsize plant.

Oh my gosh yes! I have a variety that I really like, but I don't know the name. I cut five stems from it two years ago and now I have five maturing lavender plants. you just have to cut right below the new growth into the woody bits, stick it in a pot of soil, and water. It is literally that easy.

@@Born_A_Star Absolutely, I also propagate lavender indoors during the cooler months. Be sure to have the pots in a tray so you can bottom water. The plants will only take the amount of water they need.

Spanish Lavender is my favorite but it's only hardy in zones 7 and up. Some sites say zone 8 and up. I've tried to grow it in my greenhouse but I think its too humid. Here in my Kansas garden with clay soil I've added gravel to the bottom of the hole I'm going to plant lavender in and I've been successful. Thanks for all the tips.

Thanks Janey. I love lavender.❤ I'm in 7b in Vancouver BC Canada and have been growing it for years. We have a long season, and I dont want woody plants, so I prune twice a year always (I prune many plants as soon as they have a full bud, then bunch and dry the flowers). This year I pruned late spring just for shaping and followed Jason at Fraser Valley Rose Farm's (check him out!) advice and used the prunings to propogate! So exciting!! Rooting hormone, into a pot out in my deck since I dont have lights etc.). Only one didn't root! I'm planning a teeny lavender field and the cuttings are the beginning. 😊

Thanks for all the great info about lavender! I have a few older plants, and while it is too late to remedy the woody parts, I still love them. I found that my lavender really appreciated getting some supplemental water in the heat. I also had them in pots, but when I transplanted them to the soil, they were so much happier.🥰💐

I garden in zone 7b and have a river next to our garden. The lavender has died immediately for me, we get mostly cooler temperatures and the high humidity was not helping either. Where my parents live, it seems to be loving its life growing out of stones haha!

In Virginia 7a (hot and humid summers with wet winters and very acidic red clay soil), I've tried for years to grow lavender in many different ways. I've had the most success growing Phenomenal and Sensational in large containers with plenty of drainage holes filled with a 3/4 compost and 1/4 cactus potting mix. The plants I have had growing about 3 years were watered the day they were planted and never since. Rain water has been enough for them. Maybe that will help some other southern gardeners.

Thank you for this. I've tried over the years to grow lavender (KY) without much success. When it did grow I ended up with blooms but the woody inside which was ugly. I had no idea what to do, I'm from the school of plant it, water it in and you're on your own, I may try again and make sure I find the correct type of lavender. Stay cool. How are your animals and chickens doing in the heat?

If you prune right after flowering, you may get a second bloom. Then prune again in fall. If the plants are older and extremely out of shape, you may need to start over.

Love lavender! Zone 5b-6a They volunteer abundantly in my raised (stone) garden bed; I really want to transplant these and make my own lavender field up on my hill. You didn’t touch on this, unless I missed it, but I’m assuming I won’t need mulch or gravel type to cover them if I did plant lots of them? So I’d basically scrape off the sod and just plop them in (just weed the area when they pop up?)

@@crocketp I was formerly classified 5b here in Upstate NY but still plant within that range. My husband had gotten us some English lavender when we first moved into our home. The blooms grow so large and out - it’s crazy. We have been able to attract a variety of bees 🐝. On a side note, I once bought several zone 7 “Amazon Mist New Zealand Hair Sedge” and I was shocked they came back for me with our winters here. Gardening is full of surprises!

It is very interesting my lavender in the back yard full sun didn’t do as well as the lavender in the front yard, morning sun, very strange.. I am in zone 4a and when I plant lavender I dig the hole or trough I fill the bottom with gravel then add soil then plant the lavender. The lavender is taking a long time to fill in but I will be patient. There are lots of small new plants forming. Thank you for this information.
@MyFocusVaries

The gravel at the bottom of the hole may be causing drainage problems. My master gardener neighbour gave me this information; water has a hard time crossing through layers. You may have more luck mixing the gravel in to the soil. But only if you have a really bad drainage problem. I'm in Vancouver BC, a temperate rainforest and I plant into my regular garden soil. I have good drainage in general.

@@moniquemckenna6795 Hi! I have relatives in Edmonton. And I was in Calgary on the weekend, so close! 😁 The difference in growth in the front and back could be a difference in your soil. Or perhaps you get more wind in one area. I have a cold spot in my front garden where it took 3 tries to find a plant that would survive because it was a low spot and cool air pooled there. We're zone 7, but I needed a zone 5 plant for that spot. Lavender likes the heat, so maybe it's something complicated like that.
