FM synthesis is the most underrated and underused type of synthesis in music. I love how Korg has modernized FM sounds with the Opsix🎉
@rbeny Жыл бұрын
agreed, the Opsix is so good. I love that Korg allowed for a user-editable algorithm. the possibilities on this thing are wild and endless.

gorgeous. sublime. astonishingly lovely. evocative and fragile, with a subtle, powerful, nuanced beauty. hidden depths and tides; the heart is a lavender sea. and on a technical level, this is such a fascinating, extraordinary showcase of FM synthesis. evolving, unfolding, otherworldly textures; yet grounded in hints of acoustic timbres.

pretty nice composition on that OPSIX. So many possibilities with that machine and I really like how it works with other gear giving that "component" that is missing in the mix.. not really "warm" but harsh, clear, and complex.

Stellar composition! I really like the transition from the almost "Christian Fennesz" like opening section to the cavernous harp/guitar parts in the middle that morphs into that disintegrating string movement (That is the best I can do to describe what I am hearing). I got my first synth back in 1981, and people always talk about the "good old days of synths" (when in reality they never stayed in tune, most had shoddy build quality, and they cost an arm and a leg) . I dare to say that NOW is the golden age of synths! I have a monstrous DX5 sitting in my studio, which I run through a Meris Mercury 7. Honestly, this Opsix sounds much much better....and at a fraction of the cost and size (Korg just put them on sale for $329.........I had to get one)

Thanks for sharing and welcome back. The previous year was rough for myself as well, as I lost my entire music studio and my house in the wild fires that happened in Oregon. Happily, Modal Electronics had gifted me an Argon 8 (I lost 4 of their synths in the wild fire) and I hope to have the studio up and running soon. I have been playing with the synth some and find that it does replace the more modular set up that I have before and is good enough. I am happy to hear you tweak the very good semi-modular synth you picked up and find it very encouraging.

so sorry to hear about the loss of your house and studio. hope you are back up and running soon!

Can you explain this patch a bit? I really love the depth, sounds like 3 or more synths.
@rbeny Жыл бұрын
lots of FM feedback via the user algorithm menu and creative use of keyboard split. you can assign different keyboard splits to each of the operators, which kind of fakes multi-timbrality. I wish you could just assign different MIDI channels to each operator though. I've been meaning to post this patch in the description for people to download and use. soon.
@arcsibo Жыл бұрын
Still an amazing patch. Do you have patches that I can buy? :)
@rbeny Жыл бұрын
thank you. not currently, but it is a future possibility. check back in the description later this week - I'll upload the patches used in this piece to dropbox (iirc it was 2 patches, but I may have just ending up using 1 for the track)

indeed still in the Bay Area. that was quite the night and I'm still supremely honored I got to have a small part in it.
@somethingintheuniverse760 Жыл бұрын
It's brilliant. How do you manage to get this "noisy random vibration & instability" effect during the first 2 minutes ? (à la Cortini) ? Anyway : bravo Maestro.
@rbeny Жыл бұрын
thank you for the kind words. the noisy intro stuff is due to FM feedback! I set up two operators to modulate each other in the user algorithm section, thus creating a modulation feedback loop. I got the idea after reading about Ben Frost using FM feedback on his last album.
@thejazzjaime2 жыл бұрын
Lovely! Is it easier to create ambient scapes on the Opsix than on the Wavestate? Thanks in advance.
@rbeny2 жыл бұрын
that is the case I found, though I'm sure it might be different from person to person. Opsix is definitely an ambient sound designers dream, so far my favorite implementation of FM in hardware. I also found the UI on Opsix much easier to work with. I only had Wavestate for a few weeks and never really found a workflow that felt quick to me. Opsix's workflow is pretty good, albeit with some quirks, but nothing you need to reach the manual for.

Hey rbeny! Glad to see/hear you back! Is that distortion generated only with fm feedback or is it an additional fx?
@rbeny2 жыл бұрын
thanks! it's the fm feedback here - really fun to experiment with and try to wrangle. one turn of the wrong knob and it can go off the rails fast. but that delicate balance where it seems like it's about to spill over is where it's at
