I think what made Lavender Town so scary was how different it was. Most of the spooky scary stuff you get exposed to, especially as a kid, is more on the lines of the fun, goofy, Happy Halloween type stuff. Lavender Town had mourners. The details of the deaths were mostly unimportant, the dead in Pokemon were missed dearly. You can really feel that pain in the theme.

I really didn't understood why people found that track "scary" when the town theme was supposed to be sad and mourning. Myself, even 5 years old me, was never scarred by Lavender Town but instead I was sad and melancolic.

It became infamous due to misinformation about Japanese suicide and "bineural beats" that would give the listener depression. So the creepy aspect was that you were listening to a track that potentially killed someone. All of this is debunked and a lie of course.

​@@I_Punch_Demons OK... but why did they choose this track? What about Lavender Town, amidst thousands of other 'spooky' video games, that got that treatment? I would point to an earlier version of the same Urban Legend: "Gloomy Sunday" was written in 1932 and was blamed enough to get the monicker "The Hungarian Suicide Song". Same story, different era. Gloomy Sunday is about someone grieving their lost love and hinting that they'll kill themselves to be reunited. It's not that far a stretch: what differentiates a ghost story from a horror story is the underlying emotion it's based on. Horror stories are based on fear. Ghost stories are based on sadness.

This. The baseline he has going in the middle of the song has that "approaching horde of zombies"/"running for your life" feel to it. I'd even liken it to the Jaws theme a tiny bit. Like, the inevitable march of a hunger that is mindless, merciless, and above all, relentless... Creepy, but the kind of creepy that you'd pay for theater popcorn for.
