This introduction is also great but rather use this introduction. It is more detailed and long also. The Law of Diminishing Marginal Utility explains the behaviour of the consumer in relation to consumption of units of given commodity. This law is based on one fundamental characteristics of human wants i.e. single want can be satisfied. It is a common experience that as a consumer consumes more units of same commodity, utility for that commodity diminishes. If consumer goes on consuming same commodity successively, a stage may reached where the consumer will refuse to accept the commodity any more. This law is universal in character. It says that utility derived diminishes with the reduction in the intensity of a want. This experience of man has given rise to the law of diminishing marginal utility. Since this was first proposed by Mr. Gossen, this law is also known as Gossen's First Law. However, this law was further elaborated by Alfred Marshall in his, book 'Principles of Economics' published in 1890.
