Just because this is from an episode that aired a long, long time ago I feel like someone should point out the bigger issue of this clip. The vast majority of the people from To Catch a Predator were innocent. There were several law suits after this episode aired (in 2006 and even some before) where the vast majority settled out of court, but the pressure of the illegitimacy of the shows boiled over with the suicide of Bill Conradt and the following law suit of NBC's "Dateline" "Perverted Justice," and the Murphy Texas Police Dept. They illegally broke the fourth amendment right against search and seizure by not coordinating with the Texas Rangers (as Condradt's house was outside their jurisdiction and he was an assistant district attorney), did not contact the Collin County DA, nor a grand jury inquiry. They rushed warrants so they could get their big reveal for their show. This caused for this first time for all the charges related to that sting (one house would be set up for a large number of potential victims) to be dropped, stating that there wasn't enough evidence. This is because it is entrapment. Plain and simple. They used a legal loophole (one that is now very closed) that made it so if law enforcement simply worked with an agency that was entrapping people then that wouldn't count as entrapment. Think if a private eye worked with law enforcement drew up plans to rob a bank and hired a crew with promise of a life changing amount of money to do it, only to have the law enforcement arrest that crew. That is the Hansen dystopia. Furthermore, while they "release" the transcripts, those transcripts are most certainly edited as when they get to court several versions of the same conversation come to light, like in the case involving Dr. Maurice Wolin where it was stated by Xavier Von Erck, the founder of "Perverted-Justice," that "No individual ... has the ability to edit these files" even though later Los Angeles attorney Blair Berk questioned Von Erck on the discrepancies between three distinct copies of the instant messages the prosecution gave after the preliminary hearing. Finally, "Perverted-Justice," the consultants Dateline worked with, were paid in excess of $100,000. A massive conflict of interest as now they are being paid to "server up" people to record on television. In short, NBC dangled a child in danger on the internet and instead of getting the TV show they wanted they got Fire Fighters, Doctors, and Civil Servants; people who were the most-likely to help a suffering child and tried to pin one of the most heinous crimes in our society on them. And while yes, a few had records before appearing on the show, almost all of them have records after the show.

After the To Catch a Predator fiasco in Texas back in 2008, pretty much no network or streaming service will even consider trying their own version. So these days, it's amateur KZbinrs who "picked up the slack" by creating channels about setting up and confronting child predators. And, well... let's just say the quality varies wildly. It's obvious which ones are doing it because they genuinely care about protecting kids and which ones are just trying to get views.

So for anyone who wants spoilers, here's what happened: Spoilers: Welch, the "girlfriend," killed him. She was actually a previous victim of his and was never dating him. She killed him in revenge and goes to prison for the murder. However, she reveals that Ellie Harper, the producer for Hard Focus, sent her to Mullaly's apartment with a video camera and a knife. Hard Focus wanted to do a show about previous victims of pedophiles confronting their abusers, but the show ended up being canceled. Harper, the woman who runs Hard Focus, wanted to push the envelope and get that show back on the air, so she brought in Welch (she had previously been rejected from the show because she failed the psychological evaluation and it was determined that there was a risk of violence), and trained her to confront Mullaly (the pedophile who had abused her), and gave her a knife (ostensibly for self-defense). McCoy argues Depraved Indifference Murder and Harper is put on trial. He argues that Harper sent Welch there with the knife because she wanted a fight to break out and for a murder to happen so she could get the show resurrected. Harper is convicted of Depraved Indifference Murder.

I truly whole heartedly believe child predators should get the death penalty or at the least life without the possibility of parole. I am a survivor. At 6 years old I was raped by the neighbor down the road for 6 hours straight. My parents were told I would never have kids because of how severe the damage was. Thankfully I have 3 beautiful children. Sadly though I did miscarry twice before my 1st daughter was born. My attacker only got 4 years in prison (in a protected unit of course. Because God forbid something bad happens to him.) followed by 3 years of probation. He was only on the registry for those 3 years. Sadly the day after he got off he kidnapped a 3 year old girl and violated her in all the same ways he did me but unfortunately it went on for 3 days. She and I had to be stitched up in the front and back if you know what I mean. We both needed surgeries internally to stop the bleeding. And repair as much of the tearing they could. Im praying for a miracle. That she too will be able to have kids someday. Even though I know her chances are much slimmer than mine. This time he got 7 years followed by a 1 year rehabilitation center stay. Then 5 years of probation. Once his probation is done he will be off the registry. What do you think will happen then???? Because I know exactly what's gonna happen. And it only gets worse every time.

@TheNightVixen2 жыл бұрын
@@obliviouz Actually "Entrapment" is a very broad term in the eyes of the law. Second this spoof is of to catch a predator, and perveted justice who would lure people to these confrontations. 24 men were caught in Murphy Texas and they refused to prosecute any of them because of how "tainted" the cases were with Perverted-Justices involvement. Furthermore Joseph Roismen a sailor that was caught in the Petaluma, California edition of TCAP was acquitted after just six trial days. After reaching his decision, Judge Wick slammed the tactics used by online watchdog Perverted Justice, NBC's partner in the investigation, which he suggested lacked credibility and engaged in entrapment. To catch a predator was ended in 2008 due to the suicide of one of the predators. NBC got police to allow them to televise the raiding and arrest of said predator and he shot himself as they entered his home, with it all on camera. And as it turns out, to catch a predator actually broke a few laws themselves. They got law enforcement to arrest people outside their jurisdiction, which is illegal. Not only that, but the sister of the suicided sued NBC for unlawful action by having police raid the man’s home for entertainment value. The judge agree that it overstepped legal boundaries. NBC settled with the sister and the show was canceled.
@falcon81052 жыл бұрын
Wow, I never knew that was the reason why they canceled the series. And yet, it's kinda of bullshit. I mean yeah, I can understand that they did break some laws repeatedly on the show and them raiding/arresting the predator who then killed himself while they did it and getting it all on film. But if it was that severe, why didn't they just delete the filming of that suicide. To me, it makes zero sense that the sister would go through a legal battle with NBC, just to grab money to compensate for her dead brother who was a pedophile. The reason we have proffesional police is to make sure investigations are done right to minimize the chance of an innocent persons life getting ruined or even taken. If those people of that TV program really wanted to do good, they would send the information and footage they collected to the police and have them deal with it, then maybe air it after they have been found guilty. Unless this was from the first year of TCAP, the big plot hole is that TCAP and "Perverted Justice" worked with law enforcement during the second year onward. It might have been some kind of sensationalist television, but those men did have a choice and were not "made" to do what they did and immediately went to prison not back home.

@@openthinker6562 Sorry for keeping you waiting. For starters, the guy in the hospital was attacked by another guy whose young daughter was murdered by a child predator on a class trip at one point. As for the rest of the episode, Hannah Welch--who killed the victim who she falsely claimed she was dating--was actually sexually abused by him as a child and the producer Ellie Harper had recruited her and others as part of a show she was trying to get made which would involve them confronting their abusers. Despite Hannah saying in an interview that she wanted to kill him if given the chance, Ellie had her get combat training and gave her a knife--for protection--when confronting him with a camera. Hannah brutally stabbed him while never using the camera. Hannah pleads out, McCoy tries Ellie for basically arranging the circumstances in which the murder occurred and she's ultimately convicted.

For a show that’s supposedly against sexual abuse, this clip is sure apologetic of a guy visiting a minor after sending creepy messages. And it is critical of a real show that denounces this behavior.
@brmbkl2 жыл бұрын
The show isn’t pro or contra abuse. It’s made to paint a pretty picture of cops. This fits: police don’t like amateur police.
@thobiem Жыл бұрын
So, because they aren't explicitly singing the predator catching show's praises, they're automatically sympathising with the child predators? Abuse is never O.K but you can't advocate for vigilantism either. People are awful, just in general. If you start telling them its OK to attack or kill someone because they did something wrong, someone is definitely going to try advantage of that and then everything could spin out of control. The danger of vigilantism is letting people think that they can become judge and executioner over someone else. Even if you say, this only applies to "predators and s*x offenders" (which I more than understand) someone out there is guaranteed to take advantage. There are too many problems with letting civilians just randomly do stuff like this. Granted, the police aren't that great either but there are some set rules there at least. Reporting abuse is one thing but turning it into a spectacle for views and clicks is another. Plus, abuse survivors think and react differently. There's no way to tell how a victim would react to seeing their abuser on tv, attempting to abuse again. I think the point to this episode, is that its predatory in its own way. Authorities can do investigations like this, they absolutely should, but putting it on tv (probably) for money is problematic. And I say this as someone who used to watch TCaP myself.
@dysmissme7343 Жыл бұрын
There’s nothing Law and Order supports more than the status quo- so they’re obligated as a show to be extremely critical of any vigilantism taken up by civilians. Of course cops are allowed their extra judicial proceedings 💀

@@alessandrajackson3768 Yes, I know that the justice system isn't perfect. Especially not in the USA, from what I've heard and read. In comparison, there aren't all that many cases over here on the other side of the pond, but it still happens here, too. Does that excuse killing anyone who has done something wrong - and might never do it again? Are you really one who rejects Benjamin Franklin's "Let a hundred guilty be acquitted but one innocent should not be convicted", which they _would_ be if they served their sentence and then never committed a crime again? And that's not even getting into the fact that he didn't even get a fair trial. Even if we accept capital punishment, this _still_ was utterly immoral since it _could_ all too easily have been someone innocent because there was no evaluation of evidence under due process.
