In the Santa Barbara hills, there was a hill that they were not supposed to build on, because of the mudslides but some psychopath got it pushed through anyways and sure enough, there was a mudslide that took down the houses and killed several people. The one culprit of the fires nobody talks about is the invasive golden grass that covers the hills of California which were planted by early Spanish settlers for their livestock. Even if the forests were managed correctly you would still have issue with fires because the invasive grass is dry and highly flammable which makes it the primary source of fuel for the fires in places like the Pacific Palisades where there aren't dense forests. Native California grass aren't as flammable because their deep roots hold more moisture and native California tress also are resilient to fires that's why you see so many of them survive around homes that have burned down. The solution is to remove the invasive grass along with every invasive plant and tree species that aren't native to California, the work has to be divided between every California County and City. Updating building codes to require metal roofs on all structures as well as a water system that allows for water to fall all along the sides of the structures like a small water fall with the water collected in gutters at the bottom for reuse to provide constant flow of the water fall without the need for more water would be another layer of protection against the fires

Aerial firefighting assets were limited by the wind velocities, and by the fact the highest sustained winds would have erased any accurate drops. Medical helicopters don't fly in sustained winds/wind gusts that high, either.

The Santa Ana winds cause these fires every year. It was just worse this year because the weather has been getting crazier for reasons I’ll keep to myself but we’ve had hurricanes etc recently that were just as extreme. What amazes me is that the bad luck coincidence of bad factors (High winds onshore, dry and the reservoir empty for maintenance ) happened in WINTER. However , having an ocean there, not having a desalinization plant to produce fresh water for emergencies or backup ... That's something that future politicians and society need to look into. For example, if Santa Ana high winds are forecast, the desalinization plant should be operated and the hydrant network should be well provided for all year around. I just hope that the American society learns from this and that a better construction code is implemented after this tragedy. You cannot build thousands of homes in close proximity with their roots and outer walls made of flammable materials and rely on firefighters to avoid this kind of tragedy. And the reason given for using wood instead of bricks for walls and tiles for roofs is that California is an earthquake prone area : The Japanese have decades of engineering solutions to combine solid non-flammable structures with earthquake protection (which could be optional if you want liberal construction codes) but the non-flammable materials in the roofs should NOT be optional in the construction code. I just hope that when LA is rebuilt , that trees still form part of their landscape like they did before.

No. It was just the winds and dryness of the area. They happen every year but considering the extremities of our weather in the recent past, it was definitely a possibility that this would happen. There were huge chances of extreme, but yes very surprising to see them to this extreme. There are many professionals that did the math that gave us a heads up. Like wildfire behavior specialists, climatologist, environmental scientist, etc. that’s why insurance companies backed out. Nothing as crazy as everyone would like for it to be
