The mysterious disappearance of Dylan Rounds, a young Utah farmer, has finally reached a grim resolution following a plea agreement with his killer, James Brenner. In a calculated move to secure a reduced sentence, Brenner cooperated with authorities by leading detectives to the location where he had disposed of Rounds' body. This development brought a measure of closure to a case that had left the community and Rounds' family searching for answers.

In a tense courtroom scene, Brenner faced his sentencing, where prosecutors did not mince words, labeling the killer as "disgusting" for his actions. The judge, weighing the severity of the crime against the cooperation provided, ultimately sentenced Brenner to up to 15 years in prison. In this episode, Law&Crime's Sierra Gillespie offers a comprehensive breakdown of the court proceedings, exploring the emotional impact on the victim's family, the legal strategies employed, and the broader implications of plea deals in high-profile murder cases.

I've been awestruck by this momma bear since Dylan went missing. She's always shows up, is well spoken, focused and in the moment. She fought hard for justice, even when she had to be quiet about what she knew but couldn't share with 'us'. They made a deal so he would lead investigators to the body so that the family had closure, the judge sentenced him according to the deal. If the judge breaks the deal, it could jeopardize future cases where prosecutors want to make a deal to get something in return, and if the perp doesn't trust the judge to go along with the deal, then future families won't get the closure they deserve, so it's better the judge act as suggested by the prosecutors.

Although DP would have been the appropriate sentence, a total of 45yrs puts him behind bars for life. Brenner couldn’t face the family bc he’s a coward. That’s what cowards do. Candace is fiercely persistent, and her ability to hold it together has to be supernatural. May Candace, Justin and all of Dylan’s family finally be able to close this chapter and grieve appropriately. Blessings to all of them ❤

It boggles my mind how these courts are so focused on remorse. If you're capable of shooting someone in the head, you're probably not a very empathetic person, right? And if you shoot somebody and then afterwards feel remorse, isn't that a bit too late? The problem with this whole system is that people with poor impulse control and a lack of empathy ALL OWN GUNS.

@Seeker0fTruth
@Seeker0fTruth 7 ай бұрын
@@labrynthiosi7767 ooooohhhh ok I understood consecutive because of the definition but I didn’t understand that concurrent meant overlapping…in THAT case…what’s the point of giving concurrent sentences? Sorry for more questions…I just never understood the logic of giving out sentences but then if they’re concurrent, doesn’t they essentially cancel others out? Like: buy one 10 year sentence and get out of jail free for any other 10 year sentences? I don’t see any point in that outcome, especially from a “justice” perspective? Feels like the perfect negotiation tool for criminals (and their defense attorneys)?! Thank you very much. Appreciate you taking the time to respond.
@labrynthiosi7767
@labrynthiosi7767 7 ай бұрын
@Seeker0fTruth Concurrent sentences are usually part of a plea deal or if the crimes occur at the same point in time to the same victim, I believe? If one charge were to be overturned, the rest would still have to be served, so depending on the sentencing, getting a charge overturned may not change the length of time served much if at all.

What’s Even Sader about this murder is Dylan’s mother had told him that Brenner could get mad and possibly kill him Dylan said that he didn’t think that Brenner would kill him saying it like he really believed that he would never hurt him or kill him and he seemed pretty confident that he would never do that ‼️ Brenner said last year that Dylan didn’t appreciate what he had and wasn’t taking care of anything he had like the truck. He was also mad that in his opinion Dylan had not cleaned the metal I guess a type of garage where he kept supplies and parked his truck in it also Brenner never had anything like Dylan had but Dylan worked for what he had and bought everything himself and I think Brenner was jealous that Dylan was a kid in his early twenties and had so much at that early age and Brenner really never had anything like Dylan had and in his opinion Dylan didn’t appreciate what he had because he didn’t clean his truck or the place where he kept his supplies I thought that was a ridiculous thing to say he was a farmer they are always busy so cleaning whatever wasn’t a high priority to Dylan at that time. its was NOT Dylan's land Brenner was squatting on... it was an adjacent property owned by another person which is why Dylan had to contact Brenner for the KEY to the GATE to the seed barn... STOP LYING!!!!!!!!!!

This just disgusts and saddens me. This was such a hardworking, grounded young man and this slime that should not even be allowed to continue to live took his life. So not fair. I thought the death penalty should have applied here

How about an eye for an eye? Punishment is equal to the crime. You kill someone, you get killed. You hog tie and shoot someone - ditto. When I watch these videos I sometimes feel the bad guys aren’t getting harsh enough sentences imho. Would stronger sentences/punishments be a stronger deterrent? It seems like crime is escalating. So very sad. 😢 why is his atty protecting him?? Wha?? Get those deputies over there and turn him around.

I don’t think he will last that long in prison! Someone in there has been following this story about Dylan and will have a few words for that man once he gets behind bars. (I’m trying to be polite)

How did the victims phone get a video of the defendant either during or after the murder ? Was the victim still alive and able to record the defendant before his injuries took his life ?

I just wanted to take this opportunity to tell you, Dylan's Dad, his siblings and grandparents how truly sorry Iam for your loss. Dylan from all accounts was a hard working, kind, compassionate, caring young man who had a brilliant future ahead. This man is a cold, disgusting, disturbed, piece of garbage. The fact that your son gave him work and a place to lay his useless carcass is just heartbreaking to think about. Dylan deserved to live the life he worked so hard to make. Iam so sorry and wish you all the best when trying to find a new normal and a way to move forward without Dylan. May Peace and positivity help you do that. All the best❤Kris 🇨🇦

Brenner leading investigators to the body shouldn't have gotten him any less time. He killed Dylan in cold blood. He planned to do it that's why he brought a gun.

I understand the importance of having the remains back, but if it means him serving as little as 3 years, might it not be worth going to trial and continuing to search instead of offering a plea?

Just curious, but where was the case held? What state? Because not all judges in all states have to accept plea deals. It affects their ability to appeal, but anyone who’s a fan of Judge Boyd in TX knows she doesn’t always accept pleas. It doesn’t seem fair that wherever this case was held, the judge’s hands were tied.
