Underrated movie. 10 years from now people will realize how much a classic this is. Not just the story, the camera crew did a fantastic job making the shots look as real as possible, every fight or gun fight didn’t end up with the cliche that good guys won, and the acting is on a very professional level that you feel you’re in the movie some times.

I think it was more of a saving himself shot. He lives in the community and Rakes was an outsider. The sheriff, if he lives through the shootout, still has to live amongst all the people/community. Plus they were outnumbered and he didn't want to die bc some out of town, uppity, maniac was on a mission for bloodlust. The best way to show everyone there he wasn't with Rakes, but not kill him, was to shoot him in the leg. Super well thought out part for the scene.
