Term limits would not solve the problem. The main problem is the influence of moneyed interests on our system. Enacting serious limitations on campaign contributions would go some of the way towards weakening the stranglehold wealth has on our democracy. To do that we’ll need to have a Supreme Court that won’t simple overturn each regulation on donations as a breach of free speech- and to get that you’ll need to have a lot more judges put in place by the Democrats than the Republicans (both parties are corrupted by money- but the Democratic appointed judges have not been nearly as opposed to regulating donations as the GOP’s). If we don’t enact much stricter limitations on donations (and other forms of bribery), term limits will just make the problem worse. Candidates with little popular exposure/name recognition will be more reliant on the political money machines to get in office. Sitting Members of Congress will not care what the voters think, since they cannot be reelected. They will care what corporations and other moneyed interests think because they will (as they are now) be offered cushy consultant jobs when they get out of office if they please their donors.
