Did a small leveling 2 seasons ago same exact way as this using my broom as well. I will add also if anyone wants to spice it up a bit and help your lawn at same time. Do a 70/30 or 80/20 mixture of Sand and whatever favorite soil with humic acid in it. I personally like Fox Farm Happy Frog soil but any should help as long as humic acid is present.

I live in Oklahoma and have a brand new lawn that was installed in December then temps fell to -13 with sustained winds making it colder and my lawn looks like crap. There’s whole lines of rolled out sod that is dead. They didn’t put down any topsoil so it’s laid out right on red clay. I put down urea and then it rained really good the same day. I don’t have an auto sprinkler system … so with all that said.. watching your channel will give me a nice lawn in a few weeks. .. I hope. ☺️ ..and it’s Bermuda grass with a lot of weeds and I can’t use weed killer on it because that will kill it… thanks for all the information which I am putting into motion already.

Allyn, you obviously did this sand leveling at your Florida home which typically has a sandy soil so adding more sand to that soil is very much the same material. For LCNs like me who live farther north of you and have a clay soil is sand alone your recommendation for leveling or would you suggest a sand and top soil mixture or something else for this soil type? If you suggest a mixture, what percentage would you use (i.e., 50/50)?

I have two acres and have been working to get rid of my low spots over the years. I take pictures after heavy rains of where the water collects. I've probably moved/added about 25 yards of dirt to get rid of most of the low spots. The minimum amount of dirt for delivery is 5 yards. For basic ruts and such I use some bagged top soil.

I am late to comment here but I always apply liquid fertilizer then level after 48 hours. It gives the grass the energy needed to push through the sand and minimizes the possibility of damage when you make a mistake and pile it on too thick. I spoon feed so for bad areas, I can get some leveling in once a week. Once the lawn is where I need, I continue my spoon feeding but begin using PGR once a month

Nice video, great content overall, but I had to comment on this since you did like a whole segment on it. Sand does not seek it's own level ( I feel like that was going to give people some very misguided ideas) and that is not why we use it as a medium for leveling your lawn. The reason is actually pretty simple, since sand is almost entirely inorganic, the sand you lay down today will more or less be the same 10 years from now since none if it will decompose or compact significantly. If you have something like potting soil or garden soil that has organic matter in it (like compost) you may see more settling over time as the organic parts break down or get consumed, or just compact further over time. Your lawn looks great by the way, I'm sure you are the envy of your neighborhood :)

My problem is that I have bad low spots, but my yard is sloped, and it's 50,000 sq. ft. Sand will just end up running down the slope and probably creating a bigger bump where it gathers at some high point on the slope. What do you recommend for leveling on a slope? I know that "level" and "slope" seem diametrically opposed, but I'd like my slopes to be smooth, and not feel like washboards, so there has to be a good way to smooth the slopes. I actually thought about renting a roller like they use to flatten blacktop.

Allyn, I desperately need some advice. I’m getting ready to completely transform my girlfriends Bermuda lawn this spring/summer and just before the growing season begins, her careless daughter keeps parking half on the lawn and half on the driveway causing relatively noticeable tire marks/ruts and I’m just steaming and pulling my hair out. What should I do to correct this? I was thinking about getting a lawn roller to smooth out the bumps and then fill the soil depression with sand and level. Is this a good idea? What would you do? And when would be a good time?
@TheLawnCareNut

if the soil is mostly sand, then once the summer rains come it will even out again. Once it starts growing and you are pushing it with fert, you can bring in sand to level it off and speed things up. Just don't completely bury the turf - do it in waves.

Top soil can contain weeds seeds, peat moss is cleaner but is light and airy and will bread down over time. Compost contains unknkown amounts of nitrogen and could leave you with dark green splotches. Sand is for leveling - all the rest of that stuff can be used to amend soil but that is a separate process and should be done over the whole lawn, not just in spots you are trying to level.
