Don't listen to any of these hateful fools on here. I started the same way a few years ago and now I run 2 trucks, 4 mowers with about 100 accounts commercial and residential (in my mid 20's). Most of the guys i know that are successful in this industry started young and with nothing more than a push mower. Get as big or stay as small as you want. Keep up the good work!

Why would you use an edger, and then spend down amount of time beveling the edges? Redundant because that little 21" mower can overlap on concrete. No tie downs in bed of truck for mower?

Fair enough. I save the step and just hold the trimmer head at a 90 degree angle and get a nice sharp edge on the lawn. 1 pass and done. Here is another tip, blow after trimming and blow all the debris up onto the lawn and then mow it. Nothing left at the end to blow and nothing on the grass either. I still walk real quick with the blower and make sure so it takes an extra minute, when I leave though, there is nothing left.

Quick question.. So do you recommend not using a side bag? The lawn obviously looks great without it.. Also, blowing curbside cut grass into the street? No problems with township or neighbors doing so? Thanks in advance! Awesome vid!
@TheOlJWShow
@TheOlJWShow 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Keith! Great question! The short answer is, it depends. If you maintain the grass regularly, and use a mulch blade, then the clippings can be very helpful, providing nutrients to the grass. However, if the grass gets too long, or is super thick (like fecsue grass) then you run the risk of choking the grass with too many clippings. St Augustine grass (like whats in the video) is perfect for mulching since it is broad leafed and not too dense. I think a bagged lawn looks sharper than non bagged, but the amount of additional work and disposal negates any aesthetic gain imho. Lastly, it very much depends on what the client prefers. Regarding blowing the clippings into the street: The town I was in and the client base I had did not care, and I do not see a problem with it as long as it is not excessive amounts of grass. A lot of folks on here have taken issue over the blower/street scene. Perhaps they live in an area that it is prohibited to do so. Hope that helps buddy.

You should add a lawn striper on the back of your mower or add some weight with a pipe or something. So when you are mowing strips, you get a better angle on the grass, giving a better look to the lawn overall. I could see your strips somewhat, but i think the owner will be more impressed with a darker lined lawn.

OJ I have a few questions as im interested in starting out with a 21 inch push mower and capitalizing on the small yards in my neighbor hoods. I have a few questions for you whether or not you want to answer them on here or email me. Do you do this full time? How many yards a day do you do? How many days a week? Average time for a yard? And average price in your area for a lawn you do with a 21 inch mower? Thank you very much! Great video!
@TheOlJWShow
@TheOlJWShow 9 жыл бұрын
Hi Clay, I do not do this full time, in fact over the past couple of years I have been slowing down readying for a career shift. However, back in my mowing hay day, I would do up to 5 lawns a day during a five day workweek. Average time for a typical sized, regularly mowed neighborhood lawn is around 30 to 40 minutes for a one man show. Pricing for such lawns is about $35. The lawn in this video is really too big for the mower I used. But the client was one of my first, lived alone, and was incredibly kind. I was happy to do her lawn for the $40. However for anyone else I would start at $60. Hope this helps, and the best of luck to you buddy. -J

Clay, I started a lawn care company my first year in University (www.pristinelawncare.ca). Started out with a residential 22" mower - Toro 22" personal pace. I bought it from home depot for about $400 and it has lasted me 3 years and has cut over 1000 yards. The highest profits are on the houses in my neighborhood where I do not have to drive far. I even have 1 neighborhood where I cut 7 lawns (6 of which are all next to each other. You should be able to cut, edge mow 7 lawns next to each other (~1500 sq ft ea) in 2-3 hrs. Charging $25-35 a lawn...you are making money. If I have drive times in between lawns I typically plan on spending 1hr on a property including driving time. Best of luck.

FWIW, we use small walk behinds only for jobs with restrictions - like yards with small gates, etc. I agree that Toro makes good walk-behinds. But man, that's a large lawn for just a little 21" mower. Of course that's okay if you're a homeowner, but if you want to turn a profit you need to get on with it. With pro equipment you'd be two jobs down the block in the same amount of time. ...just my two cents worth...

The toro 22040/22043 and the earlier 22035 are legendary mowers with their two stroke Suzuki . There transmissions are bullet proof and even with a belt you rarely have to change a belt. They are a solid mower and fantastic mulcher (even better with the mulch plug) . They are very quick on the lawn and have a lot of torque. And the same hp as the gxv160 honda commercial engine. I have both honda hrc216 hydro and toro 22040 and choose the toro more often. It's lighter and easier to toss around/maneuver . Less to go wrong with it and no oil changes! Too bad toro decided to stop making them because they chose to drop the Suzuki rather than spend the money to develope a cleaner burning two stroke. This was also the case for their other great commercial mower at the time the lawn boy 22260/22261 6.5hp commercial (toro owns lawn boy)I have a lot of commercial 21s snapper with the robin ohv 6.5hp commercial is my favourite snapper, eastman spx21b with the 6hp kai , kubota w5021 commercial with shaft drive 2 speed, Lawnboy m series commercial and I think my honda hrc is near the bottom of the list because it is so heavy and doesn't have a very good cut! Leaves a lot of blades that pop up hours after mowing. also to buy a new hydro that cost almost 400$ plus installation , the shaft drive breaks often .. I don't know it's a nice mower but there is better.The toro 22040 is the best commercial 21 IMO so it you can find one buy it, honda is overrated and underpowered get the kawasaki fj180 kai for less $ if you have to buy new. I choose to buy residentially used commercials and rebuild them to use commercially . Snappers are great mowers as well and have a very simple self propel system that cost nothing to rebuild. Another good mower that is getting good reviews is the ybravo 21/25 which has the honda gxv or the fj180 kai. Great mulcher and bagger and parts are very cheap to buy when needed. It's like a commercial snapper on steroids with the hi vac lip on bottom edge of deck.
