Hope you put a bit of extra seed down for the robin. Now is about the optimum time for over seeding or patch seeding in the North of the UK. My neighbour put some seed down 4 weeks ago and it has not germinated. The ground was too cold. He was using a box of seed from a garden centre that was 18m old. I did a little small patch at the same time and it has germinated OK - but I got my seed online and put compost and a fleece on top of mine. Sending big hugs to you and your family.

Hi Shaun, for the clay soils etc, isnt top dressing with 70/30 better? majority being sand? i also watched your video for improving clay soil but also didnt see sand used, any reason? just wondering cause im about to do my lawn again this year
@LawnRight
@LawnRight 5 ай бұрын
Hi its definitely not bad, but I would personally prefer that it (talking about pure sand) would be dug in to the existing soil instead of just capping on the top via aeration.. if it were as you say, a 70/30 its definitely good, and improving things... I like to get the compost and "regular soil" in.. but would certainly be open to a 70/30 mix in there WITH the compost added in.. as well as a sprinkle of gypsum... the compost eventually encourages worm activity who will naturally aerate the soil
@RyanNewton
@RyanNewton 5 ай бұрын
I just used seaweed and iron sulphate, hollow tined 2 yrs ago, just tested this evening with fork and easily penetrated but think I have slightly clay soil, gypsum arrived today, couple of weeks I’ll scarify and apply, I see so many going on about the 70/30 which is why I asked, but I also have plenty of worm activity, I have lush green lawns in the spring and autumn but the summer it’s pure brown in the most part, not sure if it’s the conditions of soil or perhaps not very good fescue or bent grass, do you think I I should bother with sand? This winter is first time I seen it water logged, I’m also on a hill with levelled grass so plenty of drops for water to drain but it was saturated. I’ll be overseeding, it’s the sand I’m wondering weather to bother as it’s quite pricey, compost is readily available and cheaper I think.

I scarified topdressed and overseeded yesterday and covered the seeds with a light dusting of top soil. Weathers looking like 9 in day and 4 in night basically all week. The seeds should be okay to germinate shouldn't they?

Hi yes they should b just fine but I'd expect 2 to 3 weeks of waiting before seeing any results based on those temperatures.. Thankfully no frosts 😊😊

I have a question, please. I am currently doing my lawn. I have scarified, I have aerated. I've now decided I want to try and level my lawn a bit. So I've just had a delivery of 8 tons of topsoil. Will putting new top soil ontop of my aerated lawn make the aeration I did pointless? After top dressing and leveling I am going to seed and use a good compost to cover the seed. I appreciate any advice.

Hi honestly that's all good, just carry on. The aeration will help no matter what. All good 😊

When doing a full refurb with laying new seed, do you recommend using full compost to cover the seed after spreading it or a mixture of compost with sand etc ? I went to buy compost for that purpose and when i explained what i needed it for the guy at the garden center was very adamant i should get a mixture of soil & sand as apparently "its made for that very purpose", which one is best in your opinion ? Thanks as always!
@LawnRight
@LawnRight 5 ай бұрын
Either is fine honestly and sandy soil ha sbene used for years and years.. I much prefer the compost myself. The guy in the center should try it one day.. It breaks down and adds in a lot of organic goodness

Hi Shaun hope your well, I've renovated my front lawn just over 3 weeks ago, seeds have germinated and I'd say 80% covered.... I'm itching to give it its first cut but some sprouts are still fresh and more coming through, with the more established being 4/ 5cm tall, would you cut or hold on in there for a couple more weeks?
@LawnRight
@LawnRight 5 ай бұрын
Hi... That's a great result. I'd wait as long as possible but definitely cut when it's ready so in reality youll need to cut in a week but just don't let it get too long

It's a personal choice based on how far you want to go.. Some people live with with it, others are completely obsessed with perfection. If you dig it out before everything, the lawn going to look a lot better but bear in mind it can return the next spring

I need some advice. I sprayed Weedol on my lawns a couple of weeks ago (they are both established lawns). How long do I need to leave it before scarification & reseeding?
@LawnRight
@LawnRight 5 ай бұрын
Hi.. I'd want to wait around 6 weeks at minimum before seeding so about 4 more
@way2go723

So you don’t pull the weeds out but use weed killer instead at another time?? Hmm sounds dodge
@LawnRight
@LawnRight 4 ай бұрын
if we put weedkiller on now, we can't seed for at least 2 months.. its all about timing.. this customer came on at the last minute so we wouldn't have had time to spray the weeds and fit in their renovation into our already jam packed schedule. They could have had treatments/weedkillers and opted to renovate in the autumn but they didn't . They wanted it doing right now so this was really the only option
